Monaco's Yann Lienard set for Montpellier loan
AS Monaco's Yann Lienard (22) is set to join Montpellier HSC on a season-long loan, according to a report from Lienard has come through the ranks at Monaco but has made just one appearance, during a Coupe de France win over Union Saint-Jean last December. However, his route to first-team football is currently blocked. Radoslaw Majecki and Philipp Köhn are both in front of him in the pecking order. Another goalkeeper is expected to arrive this summer. There are ongoing talks with Bayer Leverkusen's Lukas Hradecky. Should a new No.1 arrive, as expected, either Köhn or Majecki are expected to leave. In any case, opportunities for Lienard will be limited during the upcoming season. Toubache-Ter now understands that the French goalkeeper is set to join Ligue 2 side Montpellier. They are in the market for a new No.1 following the departure of Benjamin Lecomte, who has joined Fulham. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Prominent French league goalscorer Jack Vergnes passes away
One of the most prolific goalscorers in the French top flight during the 1970s has passed away. Jack Vergnes was born in Magalas, a commune in the Hérault department in Southern France, on July 21, 1948. He began his career near his place of birth at Montpellier HSC before featuring at Red Star FC, Nîmes Olympique, SC Bastia, Stade de Reims, Stade Lavallois, RC Strasbourg Alsace and Girondins de Bordeaux. Advertisement Vergnes ended his career where it all began at Montpellier before retiring in 1982. His original club announced the sad news of his passing on their X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday. While he was a consistent goalscorer throughout his career in the French top flight, Vergnes only earned one selection for the French national team, with Georges Boulogne calling him for a match against Norway in 1971. He would find the back of the net on that occasion, helping Les Bleus claim a 3-1 triumph. One of his most notable matches came at Bordeaux in December 1978, netting a quadruple at the Parc des Princes, enabling his side to defeat Paris Saint-Germain on their home field 5-2. Advertisement While he never won a league title during his playing career, Vergnes was often effective and found the back of the net with plenty of regularity domestically. In 328 top-flight matches played in France, Vergnes scored 153 times between 1968 and 1982, which is a scoring rate of 0.47. He's currently the 21st all-time leading goalscorer in Ligue 1, netting three fewer than former Ballon d'Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin. Vergnes was 76. GFFN | Joel Lefevre

Montpellier set low Joris Chotard asking price
Montpellier HSC have set a low asking price for their midfielder, Joris Chotard (23), Mohamed Toubache-Ter understands. Last season, Montpellier turned down a €7m bid from Wolfsburg. This summer, they aren't even looking for half that. That offer from the Bundesliga side wasn't turned down because MHSC were against a sale; it was rejected, assuming that an improved offer would arrive. But one never did. Advertisement As a result, a disgruntled Chotard remained at the club. However, in their 50th anniversary year, it was a torrid season for La Paillade, who finished rock-bottom of Ligue 1 and were subsequently relegated to Ligue 2. Many of the club's assets have already left, including Moussa Al-Taamari, Arnaud Nordin, and Akor Adams. However, there will be further departures, not that the club will be able to garner high fees. Chotard is an example of that. Toubache-Ter understands that the France U21 international will be available for just €3m this summer. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Ex-Ligue 1 star rushed to hospital after being found unconscious at home with stab wound close to his heart
FRENCH league star Daniel Congre has been rushed to hospital - after being found at home with a stab wound. The central defender has made over 550 appearances for Toulouse, Montpellier and Dijon. 2 2 Congre, 40, became Lyon 's sporting coordinator after hanging up his boots last year. But emergency services raced to his home at Perols, near Montpellier, on Monday after concerns were raised for his welfare. Toulouse-born Congre was reportedly found unconscious with a severe stab wound close to his heart. Montpellier police have opened an enquiry into the incident, which took place near the city's airport. Congre joined Montpellier straight after their surprise Ligue 1 title win in 2012, and went on to captain the side. Aston Villa considered signing him in January 2016, while he had attracted interest from Crystal Palace and West Brom the previous spring. Able to operate in central defence or on either flank, he won seven Under-21 caps for France. Congre, whose parents hail from the French Caribbean, later received a senior call-up from Guadeloupe. Despite this, he failed to make their squad for the 2009 Concacaf Gold Cup. A source close to the now-retired player said on Tuesday morning that his condition had become more stable. But enquiries continue into whether Congre's injuries were self-inflicted or a third party was involved.

Ben Yedder could face suspended sentence and €100,000 fine after prosecution request
Prosecutors are asking for an eight-month suspended prison sentence and a €100,000 fine for French footballer Wissam Ben Yedder, who is facing potential legal consequences. These are related to accusations of psychological violence against his separated wife, whom he is divorcing. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The appeal, which is being held in Nice, has been put on hold until 3 September 2025, when a final ruling is due. Allegations of psychological abuse against Ben Yedder The lawsuit is based on a complaint made by Ben Yedder's wife in February 2024, in which she accused him of 'mental violence' during their marriage. The allegations include threats of physical violence, economic abuse, and an insulated suite of insults, humiliation, and intimidation, according to reports. Those actions, prosecutors said, caused the victim psychological harm. Ben Yedder has denied all the allegations made against him, and his lawyers have demanded his acquittal, claiming the allegations are baseless. Ben Yedder's previous legal issues and current career This is not Ben Yedder's first brush with the law. He was also sentenced in November 2024, to two years suspended for the rape of a woman when he was drunk. This charge came from September 2024, where he was charged for groping a woman and having s*x with her inside his car. Ben Yedder admitted to drink-driving but claimed he did not recall the attack due to his drunken state. He was also sentenced to a fine of €5,000, a six-month driving license suspension, and to pay the victim €6,500 damages. He is currently appealing that court ruling. But now, despite these legal problems, Ben Yedder has already returned to playing football. Leaving AS Monaco behind in 2024, he signed with Iranian club Sepahan S.C. in April 2025. The deal goes through the end of the season with an option for a multi-year extension afterward. He was previously linked with a switch to Montpellier HSC and Italian club Venezia before this transfer. Also Read: However, there has been a cloud over his career, it being the latter, and a ruling in September will be an important date in Ben Yedder's life, both personally and professionally.
