The appeal, which is being held in Nice, has been put on hold until 3 September 2025, when a final ruling is due.
Allegations of psychological abuse against Ben Yedder
The lawsuit is based on a complaint made by Ben Yedder's wife in February 2024, in which she accused him of 'mental violence' during their marriage. The allegations include threats of physical violence, economic abuse, and an insulated suite of insults, humiliation, and intimidation, according to reports.
Those actions, prosecutors said, caused the victim psychological harm. Ben Yedder has denied all the allegations made against him, and his lawyers have demanded his acquittal, claiming the allegations are baseless.
Ben Yedder's previous legal issues and current career
This is not Ben Yedder's first brush with the law. He was also sentenced in November 2024, to two years suspended for the rape of a woman when he was drunk. This charge came from September 2024, where he was charged for groping a woman and having s*x with her inside his car.
Ben Yedder admitted to drink-driving but claimed he did not recall the attack due to his drunken state. He was also sentenced to a fine of €5,000, a six-month driving license suspension, and to pay the victim €6,500 damages. He is currently appealing that court ruling.
But now, despite these legal problems, Ben Yedder has already returned to playing football. Leaving AS Monaco behind in 2024, he signed with Iranian club Sepahan S.C. in April 2025. The deal goes through the end of the season with an option for a multi-year extension afterward. He was previously linked with a switch to Montpellier HSC and Italian club Venezia before this transfer.

However, there has been a cloud over his career, it being the latter, and a ruling in September will be an important date in Ben Yedder's life, both personally and professionally.

Prosecutors describe the situation as a 'hanger war' among Chinese mafia groups, competing for control of apparel transport and hanger production, an estimated €100 million ($115 million) market. Prato prosecutor Luca Tescaroli has requested intervention from Rome, including the deployment of an anti-mafia division and additional resources for law enforcement and judicial offices. He has warned that the conflict has become a significant criminal enterprise with reach into France and Spain. Illegal labor and tax evasion fuel fast fashion output Prato's apparel industry includes approximately 5,000 small-scale, mostly Chinese-run knitwear and textile subcontractors. The sector, central to Italy's fast fashion economy, has long faced scrutiny for labor and safety violations, tax evasion, and customs fraud. Investigators report that many factories smuggle fabric from China and avoid duties, while profits are funneled back through illegal transfers. To minimize costs, operators rely on immigrant labor from China and Pakistan. Tescaroli has described this labor pool as "essential for its proper functioning." Union representatives estimate some workers earn €3 per hour, laboring up to 13 hours per day, seven days a week. Riccardo Tamborrino of Sudd Cobas stated the system is 'not just one or two bad apples, but a well-oiled system,' characterized by rapid factory closures and reopenings to evade regulation. Also read: How Mafia is turning wildfires into weapons of power and profit? Berkeley study reveals Francesca Ciuffi, also of Sudd Cobas, added, 'Police complaints from attacked workers ended up in a drawer, never reaching the court.' Key mafia figures and transnational operations Prosecutors have identified Zhang Naizhong as a central figure in Prato's criminal underworld. Described in a 2017 court document as 'the leading figure in the unscrupulous circles of the Chinese community,' Zhang allegedly holds a monopoly on apparel transportation across Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and Germany. Zhang Dayong, shot and killed in Rome alongside his girlfriend, was identified as Naizhong's deputy. His murder followed a series of fires targeting company warehouses in Paris and Madrid. Francesco Nannucci, former head of Prato's investigative police, said the Chinese mafia also runs betting operations, drug trafficking, and prostitution, and acts as a financial conduit for Italian criminal groups. 'To be able to command in Prato means being able to lead in much of Europe,' Nannucci stated. Naizhong was acquitted of usury charges in 2022, in a trial disrupted by missing documents and the lack of qualified translators. Authorities believe he may now be in China. Corruption and labor organizing amidst unrest The industry operates amid reported corruption involving both local officials and law enforcement. In May 2024, the second-in-command of Prato's Carabinieri was accused of providing entrepreneurs, including Chinese businessmen, with confidential information from police databases. In June, the city's mayor resigned during a separate corruption probe involving vote trading. Also read: Canada's biggest mafia boss Leonardo Rizzuto and 11 others arrested in Quebec under the most significant c Trucks continue moving garments day and night through Prato's industrial zones, where warehouses and showrooms bear names such as 'Miss Fashion' and 'Ohlala Pronto Moda.' Pakistani and Chinese workers load fabrics and apparel for distribution across Europe. On a recent weekday, Pakistani workers picketed outside a shuttered factory that had agreed to provide legal contracts days before. Muhammed Akram, 44, witnessed the factory owner removing equipment at night. 'Sneaky boss,' he said. Union organizers note that Chinese workers, often brought to Italy by mafia networks, rarely participate in strikes due to fear of retaliation. Despite organizing efforts that have secured contracts at more than 70 companies, Ciuffi said such progress does not protect individuals from mafia violence. 'People who wake up in the morning, quietly going to work, risk getting seriously injured, if not worse, because of a war that doesn't concern them.'

Aman Sehrawat, Sujeet Kalkal Make The Cut For World Wrestling Championships
Last Updated: Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal have secured their spots in the India squad for the upcoming World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb. Paris Olympic bronze medalist Aman Sehrawat faced minimal resistance in the World Championships selection trials, while Sujeet Kalkal showcased impressive counter-attacking skills to secure his place in the national team for the men's freestyle 65kg weight category in Lucknow on Monday. Next month's World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, will be Sehrawat's second international event since he won bronze in the French capital in 2024. The 22-year-old Sehrawat earned bronze at the Mongolia Ranking Series event in June, marking his return to competitive wrestling. On Monday, he appeared sharper than he did in Mongolia. In his opening bout against Sumit, the only points Sehrawat conceded were push-out points, as his double-leg attacks dominated the match. He won by technical superiority within the first period. The final against Rahul was also one-sided, with Sehrawat winning by technical superiority without conceding a point. Sehrawat had Rahul in a head-lock position early on, scoring a push-out point. A right leg-attack led to a two-point takedown. Sehrawat moved swiftly on the court, executing clear moves that prevented Rahul from mounting any offense, and finished the final with authority. 'I feel I am back to my best. My fitness is good and my rhythm is also back. I am ready for World Championships," Sehrawat told news agency PTI. 'I understand that I made a few mistakes in the Mongolia Ranking Series, but that was my first competition after a year. I feel I didn't do that bad, I was even leading 11-6, but I will take that defeat in my stride," he said. Aman has not yet won a senior World Championship medal. He has won medals at the 2022 Asian Games (bronze) and the 2023 Asian Championship (gold). The men's freestyle 65kg competition was intense, with Sujeet Kalkal emerging victorious. The youngster from Charkhi Dadri showed remarkable improvement from his performance a year ago. His solid defense against both Anuj (10-0) and Vishal Kaliraman (8-4) was noteworthy, as he turned adverse positions into point-scoring opportunities with impressive counter-attacking moves. There has been a void in the men's 65kg class since star wrestler Bajrang Punia ceased competing in the category, and Kalkal is gradually making this weight class his own. His mat movement and speed have improved significantly. 'We have worked on his strength over the past year. With age, he has gained power as well. He had an ankle injury some time back and used the time to improve his strength," said his father and coach, Dayanand Kalkal. 'His defense was already good; we needed to work on his attack, which was a bit loose, I would say. It has improved," he added. 'His resistance power has also improved. It will only get better," remarked coach Kuldeep Sehrawat, who also trained him at his akhada in Sonepat. Deepak Punia, who has moved to 92kg after competing in 86kg at the Tokyo Olympics, also secured his place in the national team with dominant wins. The 'ketli pehalwan' needed only 73 seconds to defeat Manjeet (SSCB) before prevailing over Haryana's Sachin. Mukul Dahiya, who qualified for the U20 World Championships, also made the senior squad in the 86kg category. His victories over Sachin Jaglan (technical superiority) and Ashish (7-2) demonstrated his potential as a future prospect for India. Haryana's Amit, who trains at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, also made an impression. His fast-paced moves and remarkable mat movement earned him a place in the Indian team in the 79kg category. His four-pointers against Parvinder were a delight to watch. Despite suffering a knee injury in the final against Services' Chander Mohan, Amit prevailed 9-6. Surprisingly, Chander Mohan did not attack much despite seeing his rival struggling after twisting his left knee. The 74kg category was a single-bout affair with only two entries received. Jaideep secured his place with a 12-6 win despite suffering a severe knee injury. Rohit, who previously competed in 65kg, secured his place in the 70kg category by defeating Sidharth (6-2) and Sagar (6-1). He received a walkover from Ashwani. Talented wrestlers Udit (61kg), Vickey (97kg), and Rajat (125kg) also made the freestyle squad. 'Sujeet beat Russian and Kazakhstan wrestlers in Hungary. He has progressed rapidly. He navigates tricky bouts like Sushil used to. He will be an Olympic medal contender," said India coach Vinod Kumar. 'Udit is also emerging fast. He has transitioned well from juniors to senior level. He is young and does not get intimidated by big names. In the coming years, he will also be a great prospect for India," he added.
