Job Corp Centers react to ruling blocking closures
MORGANFIELD, Ky. (WEHT) — Job Corp Centers around the country are celebrating a small victory after months of fighting to stay open. Earl C. Clements Job Corp Center Director Jessa Gough says it's been a whirlwind. Yesterday she said staff members were handed termination letters days after the U.S. Department of Labor announced plans to eliminate Job Corp operations nationwide. Less than 20 minutes later staff learned that a federal judge ruled to block the plans and prevent the Trump administration from closing Job Corps Centers. President Trump's decision was based on an internal review and transparency report saying it has been a failed experiment to help America's youth and calls it financially unsustainable. But Gough disagrees and says the report used data from 2023 not the most recent numbers. 'We were coming out of the covid pandemic and centers had sent all of their students home during covid,'Gough said. 'We had no students on our campus but they used 2023 statistics when we were trying to rebuild our program.' The center in Morganfield employs over 300 people and Gough says getting to this step was not an easy feat. From social media to the community she says support came from everywhere. 'You know this is why I talk to our staff and students and I told them this is why we have a voice and this is why we stand up and fight for causes that you believe in and you do it in a positive and professional manner,' Gough said. BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER YET. THE FEDERAL JUDGE ORDERED THE GOVERNMENT TO STAND DOWN UNTIL A FURTHER RULING IN THE CASE. The next court date is June 17. 'If that hearing goes in our way and in our favor that June 30 date to eliminate the Job Corp program and staff would be on halt that we would go past that June 30 date because this would then have to play out in the court and we don't know how long that will take,' Gough said. $8 million PFAS water project moves forward in Morganfield
MORGANFIELD, Ky. (WEHT) — City officials in Morganfield have a large task ahead of them — removing PFAS from the water. They say there is currently a plan in action which involves a project that will cost over $8 million dollars. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, PFAS are long lasting chemicals that break down slowly over time and can be found all across the country in fish, soil, air and water. 'They're part of our everyday life,' said David Tapp, the water treatment plant supervisor in Morganfield. 'They're in our car seats– anything you can buy that is stain resistant, water resistant or nonstick labels is generally coated in more of these chemicals. And they have a strong chemical bond. And they last forever in the environment.' Tapp says the levels of PFAS in the city are still considered 'safe,' but the city is ready to prevent it from reaching dangerous levels. 'You have a laundry list of everything from kidney cancer to birth defects to high cholesterol that it causes when it's ingested,' said Tapp. 'It's stuff that's been around for a while and we didn't realize how dangerous it was.' The project in motion involves constructing a new building — located right next to the plant that will have 'Granular-Activated Carbon' filters. We're told these filters will help remove the chemicals from the water. 'When you look at it under a microscope, it looks like lava rocks we use in a gas room.,' said Tapp. 'And you have these big metal tanks that's full of sand-looking stuff. It's real porous. And you pump water through it and the contaminants get stuck inside the pores. It's just a secondary filtering process.' Although the cost of the project is high, Tapp says the city is committed to putting residents first. 'We've secured funding for $7 million of that and we've applied for more grant funding through a couple different agencies to try to make up the difference to lessen the load on our customers and residents,' said Tapp. The building that will house the GAC filters is set to be completed in July 2027. Morganfield family recalls the night they survived a tornado
MORGANFIELD, Ky. (WEHT) — The Morganfield community continues to clean up after Friday night's tornado. After facing the unimaginable, the Rendour family feels grateful. Their Morganfield home was destroyed in Friday night's tornado but they walked away with no one hurt. Sandy Rednour says they watched as the tornado started to form and blow around debris. 'As it formed, there was no doubt we were in trouble,' Rednour said. That's when the family of six rushed to take shelter in the hallway. 'When the front room blew in, it was a like a vortex,' Rednour said. 'And the wind that rushed up the hallway, it busted through and tore off the door and door facing. And the suction blew off the roof and the back wall out. The oldest grandson thought he was going out with that.' After 26 years of memories made in their home insurance says its a total loss. The Rednours now sit and reflect on how their original plan for a tornado shelter could of cost them their lives. But in the face of destruction the family remains in good spirits.
