'I could have passed Dan Ticktum': Edoardo Mortara regrets Attack Mode strategy at Jakarta E-Prix

Image credit: Formula E Formula E Season 11 has turned out well for most teams, with new podium winners emerging in each round. At the recently held Jakarta E-Prix, it was Mahindra Racing's Edoardo Mortara who secured his first podium of the season and the team's second. While he's happy to have claimed second place in Jakarta, he feels they could have achieved even more. His teammate, Nyck De Vries, was handed a ten-second time penalty for colliding with Jake Dennis as they approached the finish line. Edoardo Mortara on his second place finish in Jakarta Edoardo Mortara joined Mahindra Racing in 2023 and had been chasing a podium finish ever since. Speaking after securing second place at the Jakarta E-Prix, the 38-year-old said, 'I'm feeling kind of disappointed for the team because I think that more was possible for us, but actually happy for me. It's been a long time coming, this podium, and if I look back, there were several occasions where, with a bit more luck, we could have changed it. ' Mortara found his podium opportunity when both his teammate Nyck De Vries and Andretti's Jake Dennis were removed from contention after their collision. 'But nevertheless, super happy with today's race. I think we managed the strategy pretty well, especially with the first Attack Mode. We got a little bit unlucky with the Safety Car and Full Course Yellow because I think I could have made good use of my Attack Mode and passed Dan [Ticktum]. I was in front of him before the second Attack Mode. Nevertheless, super happy with second place and already looking forward to the next one,' he said. However, Mortara regrets that Jakarta isn't a double-header this year, unlike its last edition in 2023. "Right from the start of the year, we're showing more and more performance, and this weekend we were really, really good. It's a shame that we only have one race here. I would have hoped to have a second one," he told in an interview. Edoardo Mortara on being part of Mahindra Racing Now running high on confidence, Mortara aims to continue the momentum in the upcoming Berlin double-header. He has achieved multiple podiums in Berlin in previous years, including one win. Reflecting on Mahindra Racing's significant improvement this season, Mortara said, "This year has been crucial for us. We brought some big updates in terms of software that helped us close a bit of the gap with the front-runners. I feel that now we have a package that is capable — not always, but on certain race weekends — of challenging at the front, and we probably had the best package in the race. Nevertheless, this result (Jakarta) shows great promise for the final race weekends, especially Berlin, which has always been a good one for me. Reliving Jakarta Throwback: Season 9 Flashbacks

Okay, full disclosure. I hit play on this 'Reliving Jakarta' video and instantly got hit with a wave of nostalgia. They've taken us back to Jakarta in Season 9, and the energy is electric even through the screen. I smiled when I saw the 2023 race's chaotic overtakes and that one crash where everyone held their breath before the dust cleared. Seeing drivers like Mortara and Guenther battling for position, you can almost feel the sweat and adrenaline. The occasional awkward camera jump and amateur-goofy crew mic checks just heighten that DIY charm. All in all, it's a heartfelt rewind that's raw, real, and totally addictive for any Formula E fan!

Mahindra Racing secures season-best result in Monaco E-Prix as Rowland takes first place

MONACO: Mahindra Racing recorded its strongest result of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season to date with a second-place finish in the opening Monaco E-Prix on Saturday. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Nyck de Vries secured a runner-up finish in the Principality behind eventual winner Oliver Roland of Nissan, while team-mate Edoardo Mortara crossed the line in fourth, moving Mahindra up to third in both the Teams' and Manufacturers' standings. Jake Dennis scored the third and final podium sport for Andretti. The team had arrived in Monaco on the back of nine consecutive points finishes and a perfect Duels qualification record so far in Season 11 with its M11Electro car. That consistency continued in qualifying, where de Vries advanced to the Semi-Finals and secured fourth on the grid. Mortara qualified ninth, giving Mahindra two cars in the top 10. De Vries made a strong start, moving into third at the first corner before managing his race through two full-course yellow periods, a mandatory PIT BOOST stop – which requires a 34-second stationary recharge – and two Attack Mode activations. He moved into second in the closing stages and held position to the flag despite late pressure from behind. 'I'm very happy to be on the podium today, especially in front of my family and friends here in Monaco,' said de Vries. 'The car was excellent, and we executed a very strong race strategically, so the whole team deserve a lot of credit for the work that we've done. 'Tomorrow is another day, and another race, but we'll enjoy this result, and it's great to have some confirmation of the progress we're continuing to make, and a reward for the work we've done so far. We know the next steps will be harder, but this is encouraging.' Mortara also moved forward through the race despite running with minor front wing damage following contact from another car. He climbed from ninth on the grid to fifth by managing his energy and using the PIT BOOST period to gain track position. He passed Nico Mueller on the final lap to take fourth. 'It's a strong result for the team, and I was very happy to come through the field and score some good points today,' said Mortara. 'Even with some minor damage, we were able to make progress and fight towards the front, which is very encouraging and another sign we are on the right path with our development of this new package. 'It's a great start to the weekend, and hopefully we can have another positive result tomorrow.' Team Principal and CEO Frederic Bertrand praised the team's performance and execution, particularly under the new PIT BOOST format that was introduced this season. 'These are the days we've been working towards as a team, and it's important to enjoy them whilst also being hungry for more,' said Bertrand. 'Today was a great example of what we have been building. We've extended our run of qualifying for the Duels and scoring points in every race this season, and I was particularly pleased to see not only how Nyck was able to fight at the front, but how Edo moved through the pack despite some small damage. 'PIT BOOST races are still a bit of an unknown for the whole paddock, but our engineers and mechanics executed a great strategy, and we were able to use it to our advantage again, as we did in Jeddah. 'Overall, a very pleasing result. It's always nice to end the day with a trophy, but our focus remains to keep up this level of performance consistently and keep being ambitious and aim for even higher.' Mahindra will return to action on Sunday for the second Monaco E-Prix of the weekend.

There are 11 more rounds to go, with the next in Monaco in May. And with such a wonderful performance this year, the Indian outfit is surely on the way to making history. The team was struggling at just 47 points last season, but it has already made 51 points in 5 rounds out of 16 races. As a result, it's in fifth position in the Teams' Standings this year. While Mortara stands at 8th position in the Drivers' Standings with 27 points, De Vries is at 11th position with 24 points. In its run so far in Formula E's inaugural season, Mahindra Racing has participated in 136 races, out of which it has won just 5 and clinched 24 podiums. They are yet to win a pole position or a podium this season so far, but it's great going and good results are sure to follow. The current season has seen a lot of ups and downs already. It started on a strong note for the team as Mortara and De Vries managed to take 5th and 6th positions in the season opener Sao Paulo E-Prix, respectively. De Vries slipped to 8th position in the second race in Mexico, whereas Mortara failed to leave an impression. The two bounced back strongly at Jeddah E-Prix Round 1, where De Vries climbed to an impressive 4th position and Mortara finished 7th. But they once again slipped to 10th and 13th positions in Round 2. At the Miami E-Prix this month, Mortara once again bounced back by clenching 5th position, but De Vries finished 11th in the race.
