'Bahut neeche girane ki koshish...': Kapkapiii actor Tusshar Kapoor admits harsh judgments about looks almost crushed him

While nepotism has become a hot topic in Bollywood in recent years, there was a time when actors from film families weren't under such intense public examination. In a recent interview, Tusshar Kapoor reflected on his debut year in the industry and shared how certain individuals attempted to undermine his journey and also tried to pull him down. Tusshar Kapoor on facing harsh criticism over his looks In an interview with Hindustan Times, Tusshar Kapoor reflected on his debut in Bollywood with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai in 2001. He acknowledged that while the conversation around nepotism wasn't as dominant back then, it had already begun to surface. He mentioned that being from a film family often invited extra scrutiny from a section of the media, who seemed to view everything with a critical lens. He noted that one had to develop a thick skin in such an environment, as there were constant attempts to bring him down. Tusshar shared that, in his early days, a particular segment of the media was often critical of star kids, seemingly determined to find flaws in whatever they did. He reportedly recalled that if one attended a press event in a natural look without makeup or hairstyling, the criticism would be "hero dikhne laayak nahi ho." The Kapkapii actor reflected that he considered himself fortunate to have had the willpower to face criticism and stay focused on his work. Recalling the release of his debut film Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, he noted that its success played a crucial role in keeping him motivated. Otherwise, he admitted, the pressure could have overwhelmed him. He clarified that he did not enter the film industry with the intent to meet anyone else's expectations, but there were constant efforts to judge and hinder his journey. However, he emphasized that the audience remains sincere and unbiased, as they judge actors purely based on their on-screen performances. Kapoor challenged the popular belief that star kids automatically have an easy journey in the film industry. He clarified that being the child of a celebrity doesn't necessarily mean having a smooth ride. While he acknowledged that landing a debut film might be relatively easier for star kids, he emphasized that even this opportunity is not guaranteed. What follows, the completion of that film and the career decisions made afterward, remains uncertain. He pointed out that constant scrutiny and the persistent perception that "the glass is always half empty" are challenges star kids often have to confront and rise above.

Tusshar Kapoor says attempts were made to derail his career because of his film background: ‘Aap hero dikhne ke laayak nahi ho'

It's difficult for star kids to escape the ever-evolving debate around nepotism. While they enjoy certain privileges, they are also subjected to intense scrutiny, especially in today's hyper-critical environment. Actor and son of veteran star Jeetendra, Tusshar Kapoor, who made his acting debut in 2001 with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, recently reflected on how things were different back then — but not entirely free of judgment. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Tusshar acknowledged that the nepotism conversation wasn't as prevalent when he entered the industry. However, he admitted that there was a concerted effort by a section of the media to malign his image because of his film background. Recalling his early days, he said, 'Especially if you were from a film background, then the glass is always half empty for a certain section of the media. You have to be very thick-skinned. Bahut neecha giraane ki koshish, bahut negativity thi (There were efforts to pull you down, a lot of negativity).' The Golmaal actor went on to claim that attempts were made to derail his journey in the industry, but he chose to maintain a thick skin and focus on his work. Reflecting on the release of his debut film, he said, 'The film (Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai) released, and it did really well. Otherwise, I could have been crushed under this pressure. I didn't come into the industry feeling I had to live up to someone's expectations. But there was an attempt to constantly judge and derail my path.' Tusshar went on to express his gratitude to the audience for supporting him He also spoke about the pressure of public appearances that comes with being a star kid. According to Tusshar, even something as basic as showing up at a press event could spark criticism. He shared, 'If you come to a press conference naturally without makeup and hair, you are criticised that aap hero dikhne ke laayak nahi ho (you don't look like a hero). If you come with makeup and hair done, you are told you are too filmy. Everyone was trying to pull you down.' While Tusshar conceded that landing a debut film may be easier for star kids, he was quick to point out that success isn't guaranteed. 'You can get your first film much easier. But even that is a chance. To finish that film and what choices you make after that, it's all unknown. The constant scrutiny and that feeling of 'no matter what you do, the glass is half empty', that is something you have to face and move on from,' he shared. Tusshar's latest release Kapkapiii — a remake of the Malayalam film Romancham — hit theatres on Friday. The film also stars Shreyas Talpade and Siddhi Idnani.

Tusshar Kapoor Reveals People Pulled Him Down For Being A Star Kid

Last Updated: Tusshar Kapoor said that the discourse around nepotism began during his time and people tried to pull him down for his family background. Ever since making his acting debut with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai in 2001, Tusshar Kapoor, the son of 70s' star Jeetendra, has been trying to make a mark in the industry. Despite delivering some hits like Golmaal franchise, The Dirty Picture and Shootout At Wadala, all of which were multi-starrers, the actor failed to maintain a strong hold among the audience. Now, Tusshar Kapoor has opened up on the scrutiny he faced in the initial stage of his career, adding that the debate around nepotism began during his time and people tried to pull him down for his family background. In a candid chat with Hindustan Times, Tusshar Kapoor recalls the existing scrutiny from a section of the media two decades back. When asked about Nepotism, he said, 'It had started in my time, too," adding, 'Especially if you were from a film background, then the glass is always half empty for a certain section of the media. You have to be very thick-skinned. Bahut neecha giraane ki koshish, bahut negativity thi (There were efforts to pull you down, a lot of negativity)." Talking further, Tusshar mentioned that a certain section of the media would target star kids, often commenting on their appearance, pulling them down. Having been a part of the industry for 24 years, Tusshar Kapoor now feels fortunate enough to have the 'willpower' to rise against all the odds and concentrate on his work. He continued, 'I didn't come into the industry feeling I had to live up to someone's expectations. But there was an attempt to constantly judge and derail my path. But the audience is very pure. They will judge you based on what they see on the screen." Tusshar also had more to say about the general perception that star kids are born with the proverbial silver spoon. However, Tusshar added that is not true. In a blunt statement, he added that the actors with a film background may get their first film much more easily but have to face constant scrutiny for the decisions they make further in their career. Tusshar Kapoor is currently entertaining fans with his role in the horror comedy Kapkapiii. Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, the film also stars Shreyas Talpade in a key role.
