Celtic see Louis Munteanu transfer rivals unmasked as £10.5m bid gets the green light

Rennes have been unmasked as the French club who have stolen a march on Celtic in the chase for Louis Munteanu. The Premiership champions reportedly had a bid rejected for the Cluj striker, with the Romanian club seeking closer to €15million for their star man. Club president Nelutu Varga claimed that he had accepted a bumper offer from an unnamed French club for Munteanu. It is now being reported that Rennes are the Ligue 1 outfit trying to do a deal, although French media have the agreed fee at €12million - Just under £10.5m. Rennes are hunting a successor for Arnaud Kalimuendo, who looks set to replace Liverpool-bound Hugo Ekitike at Frankfurt, with the Bundesliga side having submitted an offer. Hamza Igamane was high on Rennes' wanted list, although Rangers' asking price made them think twice. Record Sport revealed that Feyenoord are now willing to smash their transfer record to land the Moroccan. Now the consensus in Romania is that Munteanu is their man and he could arrive in Brittany soon to seal the deal. Meanwhile Dan Petrescu will hold talks with Celtic target Munteanu to see if he is ready to play for his Cluj side in Europe tomorrow. Cluj are in Switzerland this week for a Europa League tie against Lugano. Munteanu has yet to start a game so far this season for Petrescu's side, as the transfer interest in him continues to intensify. And former Chelsea star Petrescu - now in his fourth spell as manager of the club - will make a decision as to whether to play his star man in the European tie after talks with him. He said: "I want to have a clarifying discussion with Louis. "It's possible he'll play from the start or he might start as a sub. "If he feels good, maybe he can start. You know how it is in football. "But I want to say if he leaves tomorrow or this week, I wouldn't be upset. "I understand the situation, the club understands, the player understands and I would be happy for him. "But at the same time, if he stays, I would be even happier."

Munteanu 'bored' of transfer talk amid reported Celtic bid

The CFR Cluj forward looks set to leave the Romanian giants this summer, with a big-money move on the cards. Reports emerged from Munteanu's homeland last week that the Hoops had submitted an offer of around £6.9m for the striker who scored 25 goals in all competitions last season. However, owner Nelutu Varga declared that only an offer of upwards of £15m would be accepted, as he said an unnamed club from France were closing in on a deal. He told Pro Sport: "I won't say the club, because that's how we agreed. They are professionals and they want to present him, as is normal. "I think the transfer will be resolved in a few days." However, the 21-year-old admits he's focussed on Cluj, as he's 'bored' of being reminded about the speculation. Speaking post-match, he said: "I'm a little behind with my preparation, but with training I hope to catch up. It's not very pleasant on the bench, but that's it. I'll do my job. "If the thought of a transfer flew into my head, I would no longer be here. The thought is not in my head. "I want to tell you honestly, I'm bored of so many numbers being discussed. I'm here at Cluj."

Celtic target Louis Munteanu has broken his silence on rumours of a potential departure from Europa League outfit CFR Cluj this summer, following reports that the Scottish champions had launched bid for the striker earlier this week. The Romanian international has also been linked with Ligue 1 sides Lille and Nice in recent weeks after scoring 23-goals in the SuperLiga last year, though it is claimed to be Celtic that have made the first move, with the player subject of a reported £7million bid from Brendan Rodgers' side. Celtic are keen to add to their attacking options this summer and are set to land Shin Yamada from Kawasaki Frontale in the coming days. Brendan Rodgers is looking to add to his attacking options ahead of the season opener vs St Mirren. | Getty Images 'I'm glad I came back in style,' said Munteanu. 'I'm glad for the team's victory. That we didn't concede a goal, just like Mister [head coach Dan Petrescu] likes. It was clear in the first half that they had quality, but they weren't above us, we had to qualify, we were the better team, now we have another very difficult match.' Celtic will step up their pre-season preparations with a visit from English Premier League giants Newcastle United this weekend, with home fans set to get their first glimpse of new signings Benjamin Nygren, Callum Osmand, Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan, while a £1.5million deal to sign Yamada is also close. However, despite the impending addition of Yamada, it is understood that Rodgers is keen to add further competition for both Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda this summer as he looks to 'freshen up' his squad ahead of their attempts to win a fifth successive - and record 56th - Scottish Premiership title. Reports in the player's homeland claim that a move to Glasgow for Munteanu is a possibility, though Celtic are said to have been told improve their £7million offer, with club chairman Ioan Varga believed to want almost double for the prolific striker.
