Celtic see Louis Munteanu transfer rivals unmasked as £10.5m bid gets the green light

Daily Record2 days ago
Rennes have been unmasked as the French club who have stolen a march on Celtic in the chase for Louis Munteanu.
The Premiership champions reportedly had a bid rejected for the Cluj striker, with the Romanian club seeking closer to €15million for their star man.
Club president Nelutu Varga claimed that he had accepted a bumper offer from an unnamed French club for Munteanu. It is now being reported that Rennes are the Ligue 1 outfit trying to do a deal, although French media have the agreed fee at €12million - Just under £10.5m.
Rennes are hunting a successor for Arnaud Kalimuendo, who looks set to replace Liverpool-bound Hugo Ekitike at Frankfurt, with the Bundesliga side having submitted an offer.
Hamza Igamane was high on Rennes' wanted list, although Rangers' asking price made them think twice. Record Sport revealed that Feyenoord are now willing to smash their transfer record to land the Moroccan.
Now the consensus in Romania is that Munteanu is their man and he could arrive in Brittany soon to seal the deal.
Meanwhile Dan Petrescu will hold talks with Celtic target Munteanu to see if he is ready to play for his Cluj side in Europe tomorrow.
Cluj are in Switzerland this week for a Europa League tie against Lugano. Munteanu has yet to start a game so far this season for Petrescu's side, as the transfer interest in him continues to intensify.
And former Chelsea star Petrescu - now in his fourth spell as manager of the club - will make a decision as to whether to play his star man in the European tie after talks with him.
He said: "I want to have a clarifying discussion with Louis.
"It's possible he'll play from the start or he might start as a sub.
"If he feels good, maybe he can start. You know how it is in football.
"But I want to say if he leaves tomorrow or this week, I wouldn't be upset.
"I understand the situation, the club understands, the player understands and I would be happy for him. "But at the same time, if he stays, I would be even happier."

Harvey Elliott provides telling update on Liverpool future after Reds' spending spree

Liverpool have spent nearly £300million this summer and with Alexander Isak potentially adding another £125m on, it's inevitable that the Reds will have to listen to offers for the likes of Harvey Elliott Liverpool star Harvey Elliott has again revealed that he's open to leaving the club. Elliott, 22, is reportedly a target for West Ham after a bittersweet season at Anfield. ‌ The midfielder helped Arne Slot's side win the Premier League title but he started just six games in all competitions. Elliott reminded clubs of his magic during the under-21 European Championship, as England retained their crown and the Liverpool star was named Player of the Tournament. ‌ Elliott scored five goals from midfield, including in the final against Germany. After returning to Liverpool and travelling with his team-mates to Asia for their pre-season tour, the former Fulham wonderkid is pondering an exit. ‌ "Look, if I had it my way, I'd be here for the rest of my career, it's as simple as that, I love everything about the club," Elliott told The Anfield Wrap in Hong Kong. "But at the same time I kind of need to be selfish with myself and see what's best for me. I have big ambitions. I want to go to the World Cup. I want to keep being successful as a player. "I think it's still something I need to review. I need to have a talk with everyone, really and review the situation because we've had many new players come in, so whether it blocks the path for me I'm not sure, it's something I need to decide and have a look at. "My main focus is here now. At the moment I'm here for the season, as far as I'm aware, unless if anything changes, we have a busy pre-season, it's non-stop, I need to make sure I'm focus on that and just be ready for everything." ‌ His departure could come at the perfect time for Liverpool, who've spent an eye-watering £300million this summer and will want to recoup a chunk of that through sales. The Reds could also be about to slap down a British-record £125m bid in an attempt to prise Alexander Isak out of Newcastle. Liverpool have signed seven players so far, a stark contrast to Slot's quiet first transfer window. Hugo Ekitike became the latest addition on Wednesday, joining Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman. The Reds began their run of pre-season friendlies with a 3-1 victory over Preston North End. They're are next in action against AC Milan on Saturday before facing Yokohama F. Marinos. Hugo Ekitike meets new team-mates in Hong Kong the day after joining Liverpool

The finalities of a six-year contract were announced on Wednesday evening, by which time the French striker was already on a plane to the Far East. He arrived in time to watch the squad's open training at the Kai Tak Stadium in front of a crowd of 27,000 and at the end of the session walked onto the pitch to first greet head coach Arne Slot and then the rest of the players. Meeting the Reds 👋 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 24, 2025 During the post-workout walkabout to acknowledge the crowd he spent a couple of minutes in conversation with captain Virgil van Dijk, alongside Andy Robertson. 'When you look at the four older players, the leaders – me, Ali (Alisson Becker), Virg and Mo (Mohamed Salah) – we take it upon ourselves to try to integrate them into the squad as quickly as possible,' Robertson told LFCTV. 'Especially when they are coming from different countries and cultures, it is about getting them up to speed as quickly as possible. 'On the pitch they look after themselves, they have so much quality and that is the pleasing thing. Hugo in Hong Kong 📸 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 24, 2025 'The lads already have settled in and Hugo has just come in so we'll have dinner tonight.' Liverpool's first match of their tour is against AC Milan on Saturday but Ekitike's participation remains doubtful at this stage.
