Five hurt in late night bus accident in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: A dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, allegedly by an express bus driver, led to a multi-vehicle collision that left five people injured. The bus, carrying 22 passengers and a conductor, was en route to Semporna from the state capital when the incident occurred at KM15 of Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli around 10pm on Friday. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the 65-year-old driver is believed to have been speeding when he allegedly attempted to overtake on a double line and sideswiped a car being driven by a 30-year-old man. The bus then slammed into the rear of another vehicle driven by a 51-year-old man, and was then pushed forward into a trailer in front, he said. Careless manoeuvre: The express bus lying on its side after hitting a few vehicles at KM15 of Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli, Sabah. 'Five people were injured – the bus driver, three bus passengers and one of the other drivers. 'All of them were sent to Hospital Ranau for treatment,' Supt Mursalin added. He said blood and urine samples would also be taken from the bus driver to test for alcohol or drugs. He said the driver had three unpaid traffic summonses. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving. Dashcam footage of the incident, including clips allegedly showing the bus entering the wrong lane and narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic near the Kundasang roundabout, has since gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred around 10pm when the bus, carrying 22 passengers along with a conductor, was en route to Semporna from here. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the 65-year-old driver was believed to be speeding when he attempted to overtake on a double line and sideswiped a car driven by a 30-year-old man. The bus then slammed into the rear of another vehicle driven by a 51-year-old man, which was pushed forward into a trailer in front. 'Five people were injured, comprising the bus driver, three passengers onboard the bus, and one of the drivers from other vehicles. All were taken to Ranau Hospital for treatment,' Mursalin said. Two other drivers, of a small compact car and a trailer, were unharmed. Blood and urine samples were taken from the bus driver to check for alcohol or drug use. Police also found he had three unpaid traffic summonses. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing an accident. Fire and Rescue personnel from Ranau responded to the scene to assist with rescue operations. Dashcam footage of the incident, including clips of the bus entering the wrong lane and narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic near the Kundasang Roundabout, has gone viral on social media.

Five injured as express bus crashes into three vehicles in Ranau

RANAU (July 12): Five people were injured after an express bus crashed into three vehicles at Kilometer 15, Ranau/Tamparuli Road here on Friday night. The incident happened around 10pm when the Scania express bus, carrying 22 passengers along with the driver and a conductor, was heading to Semporna from Kota Kinabalu. The bus was believed to have been speeding before cutting at a double lane and hitting a Perodua Ativa, a Proton Saga and a trailer truck. Ranau District Police Chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said initial investigations found that the 65-year-old bus driver had overtaken a vehicle in a dangerous manner before colliding with the right side of a Perodua Ativa car driven by a 30-year-old man. The express bus carrying 22 passengers involved in the accident along the Ranau/Kundasang road on Friday night. 'The bus then hit the back of a Proton Saga car driven by a 51-year-old man, before the Proton Saga rammed into the rear of the trailer truck in front of it. 'The five injured victims consisted of the bus driver, three passengers of the express bus, namely a woman and two men, and the driver of the Proton Saga. All the injured victims are being treated at the Ranau Hospital,' he said on Saturday. The driver of the Perodua Ativa and the trailer did not suffer any injuries. Mursalin said blood and urine tests would be taken from the bus driver to detect if there is any presence of alcohol or prohibited substances. Investigation also found that the bus driver had three outstanding summonses. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving causing an accident, said Mursalin. A team of personnel from the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were at the scene of the incident to help the trapped victims. Earlier on Friday night, several dash-cam recordings went viral showing an express bus entering the opposite lane and almost hitting another vehicle. Also going viral was another recording that showed the same express bus entering a wrong lane while passing through the Kundasang Cabbage Roundabout. Authorities are currently carrying out an investigation.

Civil servant loses RM13,000 to scammers
KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant lost RM13,000 in savings after he was believed to have been scammed by imposters. The victim, who is in his 30s, was said to have received a call from someone claiming to be an official from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and later, a policeman for spreading fake news on investments, job offers and gambling. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the victim allegedly got the calls on May 27, first from someone claiming to be an MCMC officer. 'The caller claimed that his (victim) phone number was involved in the dissemination of fake messages, and then the call was allegedly reconnected to another individual who claimed to be a policeman from the Perak police headquarters,' he said. After speaking for quite some time, the man was ordered to transfer RM13,000 to a bank account belonging to one Muhammad Azlan, for 'account protection', he said. Supt Mursalin said the victim was also instructed to update photos and personal details every three hours to the 'cop' as a way of reporting himself to the police. 'Later, the victim realised that he had been cheated and lodged a report at the Ranau police station on Tuesday night,' he said. Supt Mursalin said this case is now being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. He urged the public to keep calm and think rationally when receiving such calls from unknown persons or numbers to avoid getting scammed. He also warned against revealing any personal, banking or identification information through the phone, and to not carry out any monetary transactions online or via telephone. 'Always call back the police station or agencies allegedly involved on their official land-lines to verify any calls or matters,' said Supt Mursalin.

Ranau civil servant loses RM13,000 in phone scam
RANAU (June 11): A civil servant in her 30s lost RM13,000 after falling victim to a phone scam involving individuals posing as a police officer and a representative from the Ministry of Communications and Digital. Ranau district police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said the victim received a phone call from an unknown number on May 27. The caller claimed to be from the ministry and alleged that the victim's phone number was being used to spread fake messages related to investments, job offers and gambling. The call was then redirected to another individual who claimed to be a police officer from the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK). On May 29, the victim was instructed to transfer RM13,000 into an account under the name Muhammad Azlan, allegedly for the purpose of 'account protection.' 'The scammers also demanded that the victim send photos and personal information every three hours as a form of self-reporting,' Mursalin said. After realising she had been scammed, the victim lodged a police report at the Ranau police station on June 10. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. 'I urge the public not to panic if they receive suspicious calls from individuals claiming to be police officers or representatives of government agencies,' Mursalin advised. 'Do not disclose personal information such as bank account details or identification documents, and never carry out financial transactions based solely on phone instructions.' He also reminded the public to verify any such calls with the nearest police station or district police headquarters and remain alert to the tactics used by fraud syndicates to avoid becoming victims.
