What happens to the body when children accidentally ingest mud?

Children love playing outdoors, and their curious minds are always fascinated by nature's offerings rich in colours and textures. As such, putting a handful of soil or mud inside their mouth is not the most uncommon thing you must have heard. But what exactly happens when children accidentally eat mud? spoke to a health expert and got more clarity. Dr Srinivasa Murthy C L, Lead Paediatrics, Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru said that when kids eat dirt by accident, firstly, their body may try to handle the foreign substance and as a result, it may trigger some mild disturbances in the stomach such as slight vomiting or nausea. The body's immune system may provoke vomiting or diarrhoea in an effort to cleanse the body of the mud ingested. Most children, in such cases, tend to not have any serious issues, but he added that there is always a potential risk of digesting bacteria, parasites or even toxins, which can pose serious health problems. Parents ought to keep an eye on any symptoms that do not resolve and seek medical assistance immediately. Dr Murthy said that there is the possibility that ingesting some dirt or mud may play a role in bolstering a child's immune system. This concept is known as hygiene hypothesis. It leans towards the notion that the immune system can sport a better balance from getting stimulated by early exposure to microbes. 'Due to the natural exposure of a child to these foreign agents, the child's immunity learns to distinguish good agents from the bad ones. This helps the child to prevent developing any allergic reactions or autoimmune diseases in the later stage of their lives,' he explained. The health risks associated with unintentional consumption of mud differ, depending on the soil type and the degree of its contamination. 'One of the risks that poses serious health effects is ingesting pathogenic microbes such as E. Coli or Salmonella, which cause gastrointestinal infections. Apart from various bacteria, Giardia, a parasite, that is present in mud may result in some digestive complications and loss of water from the body,' said Dr Murthy. The soil may also contain chemicals such as pesticides, heavy metals as well as harmful material from factories, leading to further chronic health hazards. Some sensitive children may even experience allergic reactions to the agents present in soil. In fact, he mentioned that natural soil exposure may positively enhance a child's immune system. However, parents should be vigilant to restrict the amount ingested by their children and make sure that they do not go to extremely polluted places, as over or frequent consumption of such materials may have adverse health effects. He put emphasis on practicing moderation, because overconsumption of mud or dirt can be risky. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Closing the leadership gap: Kuruva Venkataramana Murthy's AI-driven leadership reimagines dharma in the age of algorithms

As artificial intelligence accelerates decision-making across industries, human leadership faces a growing credibility crisis — one defined by ethical drift, emotional detachment, and reactive governance. In his groundbreaking new book, releasing on August 2, 2025, AI-Driven Leadership: Adapt. Amplify. Accelerate., TEDx speaker and UN-recognised coach Kuruva Venkataramana Murthy offers a powerful response rooted in India's ancient wisdom. Murthy proposes a Dharmic lens for the digital age, replacing the obsession with speed and scale with conscious precision. His AAA Model reframes leadership as a journey to: Adapt with Awareness Amplify with Ethics Accelerate with Alignment Far from nostalgia, this fusion of Dharma and tech-readiness delivers a strategic framework for today's founders, CXOs, and change agents navigating AI bias, data-driven decision fatigue, and system misalignment. The book draws from Panchsheel-inspired principles and real-world case studies — from AI in hiring gone wrong to the human cost of poorly scaled tech solutions. Murthy challenges readers to lead not just intelligently, but soulfully. Founder of the One in the Universe movement, Murthy's work is more than a book; it's a blueprint for rehumanising leadership in an age of algorithms.

Meta upgrades Instagram safety features for teens

Meta has upgraded Instagram safety features for teens, the company said in an email obtained by NewsNation. Meta said in the email to The Hill's partner that the upgrades include teenagers being able to 'see options to view Safety Tips and block an account prominently displayed at the top of new DM [direct messaging] chats, as well as the date the person joined Instagram.' The company said those upgrades are intended 'to give teens more context about who they're chatting to and help them spot potential scammers.' As the use of social media has gone up over the last two decades, concerns about the mental health of teens and children have also risen dramatically. A survey of 2,035 American adults from 2023 found that 50 percent of parents who had children below 18 believed their child or children's mental health had deteriorated in the prior year due to social media use. In April, Meta announced fresh 'built-in protections' for its Instagram Teen Accounts, including needing parents to consent for children to use the accounts ahead of the age of 16 and going 'live' on the platform. Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy earlier this year reiterated that in an interview that parents should regulate their children's social media usage to safeguard their mental health, especially at younger ages. 'Delaying the use of social media for your kid as long as possible is important,' Murthy told NBC News's Kristen Welker. 'The bottom line is these devices, these platforms, in particular, social media platforms, are having an effect on our children,' he added.

Following a complaint of sexual and mental harassment by a research student, Head of the Department of History at the Postgraduate Centre of Rani Channamma University (RCU) in Vijayapura K.L.N. Murthy has been suspended. In his order issued on Monday, RCU Registrar Santosh Kamagouda has said that as the charge against Prof. Murthy appears to be true prima facie, as per the report of the Internal Grievances Redressal Committee, he has been suspended under the provisions of Section 10 (1)(D) of Karnataka Civil Service (Classification, Control and Appeals) Rules 1957. The research student had, on November 4, 2024, orally made the complaint of sexual and mental harassment by her research guide (Prof. Murthy) before the vice-chancellor and registrar of the university and in the presence of Prof. Murthy. The complainant was asked by the authorities to submit a written complaint and evidence and also the progress of her research work to the university within seven days thereof. Accordingly, the aggrieved research student submitted a handwritten complaint along with evidence to prove her charge. Subsequently, the university asked the Internal Grievances Redressal Committee to inquire into the complaint of the research student and submit a report. The committee which submitted its report on July 14 this year said that Prof. Murthy misused his position and his acts amounted to sexual harassment as per the provisions of relevant Act. And, the committee recommended disciplinary action against him, saying it was justified to prevent the recurrence of such acts. The committee in its report said that the teacher accused of sexual and mental harassment prima facie violated Rule 3(1)(i), 3(iii), 30(1) and Rule 33(a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) (prohibition of sexual harassment) of the Karnataka State Civil Services (Conduct) Rules 2021.
