NASA is bringing live coverage to Netflix: How to watch Florida, California rocket launches
Floridians who can't catch a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral in person will soon have another way to watch NASA's coverage of spacecraft getting off the ground. NASA and Netflix have announced that all of the U.S. space agency's live coverage is set to soon debut on one of the world's most popular streaming platforms. The programming, which will be available sometime this summer, will be just the latest of many options viewers have to watch NASA+ content. "The goal is simple: to bring the excitement of the agency's discoveries, inventions, and space exploration to people, wherever they are," NASA said in a press release announcing the partnership. Here's everything to know about how and when to watch NASA+ on Netflix. Not that long ago, NASA ceased broadcasting programming via satellite for NASA TV, which was a widely available channel under most cable packages and live streaming services. Instead, the space agency replaced NASA TV with NASA+, a free platform to stream all of the same content. Content through NASA+ is available to watch on desktop both from the agency's official site and YouTube channel. The platform is also available to download as a mobile app on smartphones. Now, all that same cosmic content is on its way to Netflix. Viewers will soon be able to find live NASA+ content in the Netflix interface alongside other popular series. 'The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,' Rebecca Sirmons, NASA+ general manager, said in a statement. 'Together, we're committed to a golden age of innovation and exploration – inspiring new generations – right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone.' NASA+ similarly debuted in May on Prime with free content that does not require a subscription. However, users will need to have a Netflix subscription to access otherwise free NASA+ content when it becomes available on the streaming platform. Netflix subscriptions start at $7.99 a month. Netflix said in a press release on Tudum, its companion website, that NASA+ will be "included in all memberships." While NASA has said its programming will debut on Netflix sometime this summer, an exact date has not been announced. The USA TODAY Network left messages Monday, July 7 with representatives of Netflix and NASA seeking more information. "Additional programming details and schedules will be announced ahead of launch," NASA said in its announcement. The partnership comes at a time that SpaceX is increasing its rocket launches from both Florida and California. The commercial spaceflight company, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, regularly launches Starlink satellites and is the only U.S. entity with a spacecraft capable of transporting astronauts to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX provides its own coverage online and on social media site X of commercial missions like Starlink launches and flight tests in South Texas of its massive Starship spacecraft. Coverage of SpaceX rocket launches is only provided on NASA+ when the U.S. space agency is a partner on missions. In fact, the next human spaceflight for NASA, which still lacks an administrator, is likely to occur later in July or early in August. Astronauts who journeyed in late-March to the space station as part of a NASA mission known Crew-10 are set to return to Earth in the weeks ahead after they are replaced by the Crew-11 contingent. The Crew-10 mission is set to get off the ground from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. Both NASA and SpaceX, a partner on the space agency's commercial crew program, will provide coverage of both the Crew-11 rocket launch and subsequent Crew-10 water landing in California. NASA+ also provides regular coverage of astronaut spacewalks and live views of Earth from the International Space Station. Space enthusiasts can also follow along with live coverage of Cape Canaveral rocket launches from FLORIDA TODAY, part of the USA TODAY Network. NASA's next frontier is Netflix
NASA has sent astronaturs to the moon, flown through hurricanes, fetched asteroid debris, and launched a program to clean up space trash. Its next mission? Streaming on Netflix. On June 30, NASA announced that live programming from its in-home streaming service, NASA+, will be available on Netflix via a new partnership starting this summer. The move marks the most recent play in a years-long effort on NASA's part to build out its media presence by switching from traditional cable to streaming. For Netflix, the news comes as the world's largest video streaming service has continued to solidify its global dominance: In April, Netflix reported first quarter earnings of $2.9 billion, a 24% year-over-year increase. The streamer's stock is currently up nearly 45% since the beginning of 2025. For NASA, the news comes as the agency is being hit by serious budget and job cuts by the Trump administration, as well as uncertainty over its new leader. What is NASA+? NASA+ was founded in 2023 as an ad-free, no cost streaming service, available online and via NASA's app, featuring live mission coverage and original shows which offer viewers a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes efforts of scientists and engineers. The streaming service is a modern evolution of NASA TV, a traditional cable channel that began in the early '80s and continued through August 2024. NASA TV shows included a weekly segment called This Week @ NASA, a kid's program called Education File, and a historical program called NASA Gallery. In the wake of the 2010s cord cutting era and the rise of streaming (as of this June, more Americans are watching streaming platforms than both broadcast and cable combined for the first time ever), NASA decided to shift its digital focus to NASA+. Less than a year after the streaming service's founding, it already gained four times more viewership than NASA TV, per a press release. Cheryl Warner, news chief at NASA, says the NASA+ app has now been downloaded more than 40 million times. Now, it seems, NASA is looking to give viewership numbers a boost. What will NASA+ be streaming on Netflix? According to an official statement from NASA, the content set to air on Netflix will include 'rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage, and breathtaking live views of Earth from the International Space Station.' Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, added that 'The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience'—a goal that's much more achievable for NASA through Netflix's global audience of 700 million than via its own platforms. This February, NASA astronauts also began streaming on Twitch live from space for the first time ever. 'We are excited to include broader streaming opportunities as part of our NASA coverage,' Warner says. 'We are intentionally meeting our audiences through the platforms and services they use. Our coverage with Netflix is focused on live programming at this time, and there were no funds exchanged through our agreement.'

Netflix Will Livestream NASA Rocket Launches — Starting This Summer
NASA+ live programming will stream ad-free on Netflix globally starting this summer. Artist's ... More concept. The countdown is over. NASA announced earlier today that it will be providing its NASA+ programming service on Netflix. Rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage and live views of Earth from the International Space Station will all form part of the content available the industry-leading subscription streaming service. Although NASA stated that the move would begin 'starting this summer,' neither the agency nor Netflix provided a specific date. However, NASA did confirm that the move would be global, stating that 'Netflix reaches a global audience of more than 700 million people.' Netflix had 300 million paid memberships in March 2025. The news was previewed yesterday by Netflix on X (Twitter). What Is NASA+? NASA+ isn't new. It launched as a standalone, free streaming service in 2023 as an upgrade to NASA TV. It hosts content from active missions, research labs and the ISS, as well as archive footage and documentaries. Nor is this an exclusive content deal. Although Netflix will provide a feed from NASA+, the service will remain available at no cost and ad-free via the NASA app and on the agency's website. 'Together, we're committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration – inspiring new generations – right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone.' In a press release, NASA added that its goal with the Netflix deal was to 'bring the excitement of the agency's discoveries, inventions, and space exploration to people, wherever they are.' What To Expect From NASA+ The main attraction for most Netflix users will be the chance to watch rocket launches from Cape Canaveral — typically SpaceX Falcon 9 launches taking astronauts to the ISS, as well as the return of crew members via parachute. Viewers will also get real-time science briefings, behind-the-scenes mission prep and live broadcasts from astronauts on the ISS. It's not clear when NASA+ will debut on Netflix, but the next rocket launch is scheduled for 3:32 p.m. EDT on July 3, when Roscosmos plans to launch an ISS Progress 92 cargo capsule from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
