Traffic resumes on Munnar-Devikulam route

The Munnar-Devikulam stretch of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway in Munnar reopened for traffic on Wednesday morning. The Public Works department's National Highway (NH) wing on Tuesday completed debris-clearing work on the site at Munnar, where two major landslips occurred recently. Officials said traffic resumed on the road around 11.30 a.m. Sources said the district geologist would submit a report to the district administration and the NH wing regarding soil condition in the area. The district geologist had inspected the area on Monday. Sources said soil absorbed water during rain and fell onto the road stretch in the area. 'If heavy rainfall occurs in the area, there is a chance that more landslips will occur. The report of the geologist will include practical recommendations on how to resolve the issue permanently,' the sources said. The sources said earlier the authorities had sought the opinion of former Idukki district geologist to set up a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences court near the old Government Arts College at Munnar, where landslips had occurred in the 2018 floods. But the plan was dropped after the geologist warned of chances of landslips in the area. Officials said the NH wing was planning to impose travel ban on the Munnar-Devikulam stretch when the authorities issued red and orange alerts in the district. 'There are chances of more landslips in the area. The NH wing will take steps based on the report by the district geologist,' said an official. Two major landslides occurred near the old Government Arts College in Munnar on July 26 and 27. The first landslip around 10 p.m. on Saturday, trapped a lorry under the debris killing the driver. The second landslip on Sunday morning caused major damage in the area.

Chinese tycoon's proposed water deal spurs objections in US state of New Hampshire

China's richest man, Zhong Shanshan, has come under scrutiny in the small northeastern US state of New Hampshire, home to just over 1 million residents, over a plan to develop an industrial site in the state's second-largest city, Nashua. The controversy began in May when it emerged that a US subsidiary of Zhong's firm, Nongfu Spring, NF North America, had quietly acquired a single-storey building on a 9.3-hectare (23-acre) industrial site in Nashua in January. The site had been abandoned for nearly 11 years, and the company planned to build a beverage plant and purchase the city's surplus water for its operations. 'Chinese billionaire wants NH water,' declared a local news headline that month. Zhong founded Nongfu Spring, now China's largest beverage company. His net worth is estimated at US$64 billion. Unlike earlier large Chinese investments that might have been unremarkable before China became synonymous with national security threats to US policymakers left and right, NF North America's prospects now appear uncertain. Likewise, similar deals, including battery giant Gotion , CATL's partnership with Ford, and agribusiness firm Fufeng , have been stalled entirely in recent years or face mounting scrutiny.

The House was also informed that since April 2014 – the starting of the financial year 2014-15, a total of 54,004 km of state roads, including state highways and greenfield stretches, have been notified as NHs. 'Development and maintenance of NHs is a continuous process. Works on notified NHs are accordingly taken up based on the traffic density, connectivity requirement, condition of the road, inter-se priority and synergy with PM Gati Shakti NM," the Ministry said. MP Chavda Vinod Lakhamsh and Rajesh Mishra had asked Union Minister Nitin Gadkari if any proposals are pending for sanctioning of new national highways. Gadkari said currently 1,240 NHs projects in about 29,400 km length costing Rs 7.8 lakh crore are under construction in the country. Gadkari also said that at present, 206 under construction NHs projects – costing Rs 91,290 crore – are delayed in Rajasthan and north eastern states including Assam. These projects are expected to be ready in a phased manner in 2025-26 and only few projects will be completed beyond 2026-27. Pace of NH building drops below 30 km/day Gadkari said that construction of NHs and the growth in NH construction in Kilometres/day during 2014-25 has been below 30 km/day in almost all the financial year, except three times – 2020-21 (37 km/day); 2023-24 (34 km/day); 2018-19 (30 km/day). Deaths due to accidents on national highways have marginally reduced since 2023: Govt data

NEW DELHI: Deaths due to accidents on national highways have marginally reduced. The road transport ministry on Wednesday informed Rajya Sabha that 53,372 lives were lost in road crashes on the NH network in 2023 and this reduced to 52,609 during last year. Govt data showed that in 2022, fatalities on NH were 61,038. In a written reply, the ministry said the govt has published the road accidents report annually up to 2022. 'Further, electronic detailed accident report (eDAR) portal has been developed, a central repository for reporting, management and analysis of road accidents across the country,' said the ministry. Quoting eDAR data, it said that till June this year, 26,770 lives were lost in crashes on NHs. The ministry said that the NHAI has installed the advanced traffic management system (ATMS) on high-traffic density NHs and national expressways such as Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Trans-Haryana, Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi Mumbai Expressway. 'ATMS has provisions for various electronic enforcement devices which help in speedy identification of incidents on highway stretches and effectively monitor highways, thereby improving the response time of the on-site assistance,' it said. Responding to a separate question, the ministry said road safety audits have been conducted for 1.1 lakh km NHs during the last three years.
