Nagpur: A gang of ganja peddlers were arrested after a Nagpur police crime branch patrol team intercepted three men near Metro pillar between Chhatrapati Chowk and Coca-Cola Chowk late Tuesday night. The accused, all residents of Secunderabad, were found carrying 1.8kg ganja. A follow-up led to the arrest of their Nagpur-based supplier. The patrol team flagged the trio to stop after spotting them loitering in a zone known for high footfall but no late-night activity. When stopped and questioned, the men gave their names as Michael Jacob Harry Anthony (32), Saikumar Kashipatti Anutulla (32), and Deepak Narendra Katti (23) all of whom hail from Chacha Nehru Nagar, Bansalpeth, Secunderabad, Telangana. Their bags were searched on the spot. One contained a tightly wrapped haul of ganja, weighing nearly 1.8 kg. The men offered no resistance. Senior PI Pankaj Bondse from the Pratap Nagar police station told TOI that the supplier picked up ganja from another one from Mominpura. "They are not highly educated. One of these is illiterate, while the others have studied till 7th and 9th grade," he said and added that they are newbies and have a clean record. All four have been charged under Sections 8(a), 20(b), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They have been handed over to Pratap Nagar police for further legal action. The operation was led by PI Amol Deshmukh and PSI Sachin Bhonde, under the supervision of Additional CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and ACP Abhijit Patil. Further investigation is on to trace the source of the supply chain and identify more local links. Police suspect that it wasn't the gang's first drop in the city.

Nagpur: The (MNS) has welcomed the state govt's decision to withdraw the controversial government resolutions (GRs) mandating Hindi as a compulsory third language from Class I. The party has called it a victory for Marathi pride and a direct result of party chief 's steadfast opposition. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nagpur-based Sharad Bhandarkar, state general secretary of MNS Shikshak Shikshattar Sena (teaching and non-teaching staff association), said the move reflects the party's long-standing stand on protecting Marathi language and culture. "Since Marathi was accorded Classical status, there were efforts by some to undermine its importance. We are not against Hindi," he said, "but you cannot keep it mandatory for such young kids. " He clarified that MNS does not oppose the existing three-language formula, under which Marathi is already compulsory. "Marathi is the official language of the state and must remain mandatory in schools," Bhandarkar added. He noted that the issue could have electoral implications. "This issue will impact elections too. In local body polls, people connect with local issues. And our Marathi pride, our language is one of these issues. People will remember who stood up for Marathi and who tried to sideline it," Bhandarkar said. The controversy took a decisive turn on Sunday evening when CM Devendra Fadnavis announced cancellation of the GR at an event in Mumbai. The state govt also constituted a committee to re-examine the three-language policy framework. On Monday, Raj Thackeray addressed the media and reiterated that he would not allow language imposition on Maharashtra. He said that a planned protest march scheduled for July 5 would now be celebrated as a 'victory rally' following the govt withdrawing the GR.

Army to get ₹2,000 crore hardware through emergency route

NEW DELHI: The defence ministry has signed a raft of contracts worth almost ₹ 2,000 crore through the emergency procurement route to boost the Indian Army's readiness in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, with some of these deals concluded after the recent four-day military confrontation with Pakistan under Operation Sindoor, officials aware of the matter said on Tuesday. An Indian army soldier stands guard at the Line of Control (LoC) between Pakistan and India on May 20 (AFP FILE) The weapons and systems ordered include integrated drone detection and interdiction systems, low-level lightweight radars, very short-range air defence systems and remotely piloted aerial vehicles. Thirteen contracts under the emergency procurement mechanism have been concluded, the defence ministry said on Tuesday. 'These contracts, amounting to ₹ 1,981.90 crore, have been finalised against an (earlier) overall sanctioned outlay of ₹ 2,000 crore for the Indian Army,' it said in a statement. The hardware on order includes loitering munitions, different types of drones, bullet-proof jackets, ballistic helmets, quick reaction fighting vehicles (both heavy and medium) and night sights for rifles. 'Executed through fast-track procedures under the emergency procurement mandate, the procurement aims to enhance situational awareness, lethality, mobility, and protection for troops deployed in counter-terrorism environments,' the ministry added. The 450 locally produced loitering munitions, or kamikaze drones, ordered from a Nagpur-based defence firm, Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd, to boost the army's precision targeting capabilities – as reported by HT on Tuesday -- are part of the emergency procurement. These procurements reflect the ministry's commitment to equipping the Indian Army with modern, mission-critical, and completely indigenous systems to meet emerging security challenges, and the emergency procurement route continues to be a key enabler in bridging urgent capability gaps and ensuring timely induction of vital operational equipment, the statement added. India launched the operation in the early hours of May 7 and struck terror and military installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike in which 26 people were shot dead. It triggered a four-day military confrontation with Pakistan involving fighter jets, missiles, drones, long-range weapons and heavy artillery before the two sides reached an understanding on stopping all military action on May 10. Days after the ceasefire, the government granted powers to the armed forces to make emergency purchases worth around ₹ 40,000 crore.
