Nagpur: A gang of ganja peddlers were arrested after a Nagpur police crime branch patrol team intercepted three men near Metro pillar between Chhatrapati Chowk and Coca-Cola Chowk late Tuesday night.
The accused, all residents of Secunderabad, were found carrying 1.8kg ganja. A follow-up led to the arrest of their Nagpur-based supplier.
The patrol team flagged the trio to stop after spotting them loitering in a zone known for high footfall but no late-night activity. When stopped and questioned, the men gave their names as Michael Jacob Harry Anthony (32), Saikumar Kashipatti Anutulla (32), and Deepak Narendra Katti (23) all of whom hail from Chacha Nehru Nagar, Bansalpeth, Secunderabad, Telangana.
Their bags were searched on the spot. One contained a tightly wrapped haul of ganja, weighing nearly 1.8 kg. The men offered no resistance. During questioning, they immediately revealed their identity and the name of their supplier, Mohammad Sadiq Mohammad Rauf (43), a resident of Satranjipura, opposite Badi Masjid, in Nagpur's Lakadganj area.
Based on the input, Sadiq was picked up from his residence. Police also recovered three mobile phones used in the transaction and a travel bag, together worth Rs92,360.

Preliminary checks suggest the accused entered the city recently and were attempting to push the consignment to smaller peddlers operating in east Nagpur.
Senior PI Pankaj Bondse from the Pratap Nagar police station told TOI that the supplier picked up ganja from another one from Mominpura. "They are not highly educated. One of these is illiterate, while the others have studied till 7th and 9th grade," he said and added that they are newbies and have a clean record.
All four have been charged under Sections 8(a), 20(b), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They have been handed over to Pratap Nagar police for further legal action.
The operation was led by PI Amol Deshmukh and PSI Sachin Bhonde, under the supervision of Additional CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and ACP Abhijit Patil. Further investigation is on to trace the source of the supply chain and identify more local links. Police suspect that it wasn't the gang's first drop in the city.

Man caught with ganja gets jail term, but will walk free in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad: On Saturday, Sahibabad resident Nitin got a jail term, but soon he was declared a free man as well — the term of the sentence awarded to the convict was exactly the same as the period already spent in jail. Accordingly, his release was ordered by a court. Additional sessions judge Sushil Kumar (4th) sentenced Nitin to one year, 10 months and 11 days in jail with a fine of Rs 10,000 for keeping 1.6 kg of ganja, which had been recovered by police nine years ago. He was arrested by Sahibabad police on March 15, 2016 near Mohan Nagar. The prosecution informed the court he was arrested on suspicion. "When a police team under sub-inspector Radheshyam Yadav was on its patrol duty, one man coming from Rajiv Colony tried to escape on seeing police, so he was stopped for questioning. He confessed to carrying ganja and he was informed about his right to be frisked before a magistrate, but he refused and allowed the police team to do so," the prosecution said. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida The court took cognisance of the case under Section 18 read with 20 of the NDPS Act on Oct 9, 2023, following which the hearing started and the prosecution completed recording evidence on Feb 18. In a sudden turn of events, instead of cross-examining prosecution witnesses, defence sought permission for recording the statement of the accused under Section 313 of CrPC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo The accused supported the prosecution narrative and confessed to carrying the said quantity of ganja for his personal consumption. He, however, denied the prosecution theory that he used to sell ganja to the factory workers to earn a living and urged for leniency. The court decided to award a term of sentence that the convict had already spent in custody. "Though arrested in March 2016, the accused spent one year, 11 months and 10 days in jail to date, so he is being sentenced with the same term under Section 18 read with 20 of the NDPS Act and is directed to deposit a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which he must spend 30 more days in judicial custody," the court said.
