Errant MBPJ staff to be dealt with
PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) officers have been warned to expedite handling ratepayers' complaints or be given show-cause letters. Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said this was to tackle delays as well as boost accountability within MBPJ amid growing public discontent, especially with the increase in assessment rates this year. He said officers must address complaints lodged through the Public Complaints Management System (Sispaa) in a speedy manner. 'For example, if the complaint was lodged in March and if in June there is no response, I will issue the letter. 'The staff will have seven days to show reasons as to why they didn't take any action or reply to the complaint. 'The staff must provide answers and if I cannot accept their reasoning, I will take disciplinary action,' Mohamad Zahri said at the city council's full board meeting at MBPJ headquarters. He said this in response to Zone 19 councillor Nalina Nair's meeting postponement speech highlighting the lack of response by MBPJ to a complaint about a collapsed drain in SS20. Mohamad Zahri: Staff have seven days to answer show-cause letter. Mohamad Zahri said staff must acknowledge and reply to the complaint and not keep silent. 'People become angry because there is no reply to their complaints. 'We also need to give a reasonable time estimate as to when the problem will be resolved,' he added. At the meeting, Nalina said the collapsed drain in Jalan SS20/6 resulted in a deep hole on the walkway, which was dangerous. The first complaint, she said, was made by residents in February this year, but there was no response, and in April, when councillor Yip Sean Yi followed up, again no clear answer was provided. 'On June 12, I raised this matter in the Infrastructure, Traffic and Public Facilities committee meeting, but was told that the department had not been to the location to assess the problem or propose a solution. 'On June 17, this matter was brought up again but the answer received was still lacklustre. 'Finally, after a few councillors and I went to the location, took photos and forwarded the complaints in the Councillor Complaints Whatsapp group, action was taken the next day.' Nalina stressed that the increase in assessment rates meant that people expected faster, more transparent and more effective work from MBPJ. 'Their complaints must be answered promptly and repair works carried out properly with continuous monitoring,' she said. She cited another example of a complaint regarding a broken bench at a park in Section 1. 'The usual answer given in meetings is that there is no allocation, whereas small works to remove dangerous objects from public areas do not require large expenditure. On the issue of dengue cases in Petaling Jaya, Mohamad Zahri said a total of 1,194 cases had been reported as of June 7, which was an 18% increase compared to the previous week. 'Currently, 19 outbreak localities have been identified, including two hotspots, reflecting the urgent need to improve comprehensive dengue prevention and control. 'Among the main contributing factors to the increase in dengue cases are low environmental cleanliness, illegal gardens, empty houses and abandoned reserve lands. 'This situation is further exacerbated by the careless attitude of a few communities who are less aware of the dangers of dengue,' he said in his speech at the meeting. Mohamad Zahri said Petaling district was among areas with the highest cases in Selangor, while Damansara Damai was the main contributor to cases under MBPJ's jurisdiction. 'In this area, there are 15 high-rise housing clusters comprising 14,477 residential units, with high population density becoming a risk factor for dengue transmission,' he said.

Appeal against Selangor DAP Wanita leader's acquittal withdrawn
KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor DAP Wanita secretary, Nalina Nair Rama Krishnan, remains acquitted of a disorderly conduct charge, for allegedly causing a disturbance at a police station here four years ago. During today's proceedings at the High Court, deputy public prosecutor Noor Dayana Mohamad informed Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin that the prosecution was withdrawing its appeal against the Magistrate's Court decision to acquit and discharge the 36-year-old on Aug 10, 2023. 'In light of the withdrawal, the prosecution's appeal is hereby dismissed,' said Judge Muhammad Jamil. Also present was Nalina's counsel, Farida Mohamad. On Aug 10, 2023, Magistrate Nadia Othman acquitted and discharged Nalina after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against her at the close of its proceedings. Nalina was charged under Section 90 of the Police Act 1967 for allegedly committing the offence at the lobby of the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 9 pm on Aug 19 Aug 2021. Speaking to reporters outside the court, Nalina expressed gratitude to her legal team for their unwavering commitment and courage in defending her.

Court upholds acquittal of Selangor DAP Women's Secretary over police station incident
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here today upheld the magistrate's court decision to acquit and discharge Selangor DAP Women's secretary Nalina Nair Rama Krishnan of charges related to rioting and behaving indecently at a police station four years ago. Deputy public prosecutor Noor Dayana Mohamad informed the court that the prosecution was withdrawing its appeal against the lower court's decision on Aug 10, 2023, which had freed Nalina. Nalina's lawyer, Farida Mohamad, informed the court that the defence had no objections to the prosecution's decision to withdraw the appeal. Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin then dismissed the prosecution's appeal. On Aug 21, 2021, Nalina, together with an activist, claimed trial when they were accused of committing the offence when they were detained for participating in a candlelight vigil at Dataran Merdeka. On Aug 10, 2023, the magistrate's court discharged and acquitted the duo without calling for their defence, after finding that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case at the end of the prosecution's case. Nalina was accused of committing the offence at the lobby of the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here at 9pm on Aug19, 2021. She was charged under Section 90 of the Police Act 1967 and punishable under Section 94 of the same Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM500, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, upon conviction. Speaking to reporters after the proceedings, Nalina expressed her gratitude to her legal team, describing them as extraordinary in their committed and courageous defence of her case. She said the decision was a result of their tireless efforts and belonged to everyone who continues to uphold human rights and civil liberties. On Aug 19, 31 individuals were detained for participating in a candlelight vigil at Dataran Merdeka in honouring those who died from Covid-19.

(X pic) PETALING JAYA: The prosecution has dropped its appeal against the acquittal of a Petaling Jaya city councillor and another individual previously charged with disorderly conduct at a police station. The pair were among 31 people arrested while attending a candlelight vigil for Covid-19 victims at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 19, 2021. In a Facebook post, DAP's Nalina Nair said the prosecution decided today to drop its appeal against the acquittal given to her and Sujatra Jayaraj in 2023. 'This decision reaffirms what we have maintained all along: that our arrest and the charges brought against us were unjust. 'The police and public prosecutors must reflect deeply on the handling of this case. Due process must always be respected. The power to arrest must never be misused to intimidate or suppress legitimate civil action,' said Nalina. On Aug 26, 2021, Nalina and Sujatra claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur magistrates' court to disorderly conduct at the Dang Wangi police station. They were arrested after attending the memorial for Covid-19 victims at Dataran Merdeka, alongside others like Undi18 co-founder Qyira Yusri and Misi Solidariti founder Sarah Irdina Ariff. They were investigated for gathering without notice and breaching Covid-19 restrictions at the time, and slapped with a RM2,000 compound each.
