Man held 20 years after killing girlfriend in Surat hotel

Surat : The Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) of Surat police has arrested a 55-year-old man nearly two decades after he murdered his girlfriend in a hotel room in the city. The accused, identified as Vengal Rajappa alias Gatumullu Bhumaiya, had been on the run since 2005. Rajappa was finally traced to his native village, Nizampalli in Warangal district of Telangana, where he had been living under the radar, believing the police had lost track of him. A tip-off led the PCB team to his location, and he was apprehended after verification. According to PCB inspector RS Suvera, the incident took place in 2005 when Rajappa had arrived in Surat by train to deliver a consignment of ganja. To avoid police suspicion, he brought his girlfriend, Premila, along and checked into Nilkanth Hotel in the Mahidharpura area. The two allegedly argued over the profits from their illegal dealings, and in a fit of rage, Rajappa strangled Premila with a plastic thread. He then approached the hotel reception, told the staff that his 'wife' was unwell, and asked them to provide water or medicine if she rang the bell. He left the hotel, never to return. Hotel staff grew suspicious after hours of silence and discovered Premila's body inside the room. After the murder, Rajappa kept moving across states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, taking up odd jobs to stay under the radar. Around 2015, he resumed drug peddling and was arrested by Telangana police in 2021 in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case. He was released from jail in 2023 and returned to his village, where he began farming. In addition to the 2005 murder case in Surat, Rajappa also faces charges in an NDPS case registered by Regonda police in Telangana.
