Where Alabama lands in updated USA TODAY Sports early Top 25 college basketball rankings
Alabama basketball hasn't exactly had a dull offseason. The Crimson Tide's nonconference scheduling announcements alone have been noteworthy. Alabama will face marquee programs like Illinois (at United Center in Chicago), St. John's at Madison Square Garden, Gonzaga and UNLV at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, and Arizona in Birmingham. They'll face Clemson in the 2025 ACC-SEC Challenge and potentially host the nation's No. 1 ranked team when the Purdue Boilermakers visit Coleman Coliseum on Nov. 13. On the roster front, coach Nate Oats got a boost when Labaron Philon chose to return to college for his sophomore season rather than hope for a potential second-round NBA draft selection. Philon's return is particularly welcome news since Alabama lost top scorer Mark Sears to graduation. Philon and Aden Holloway will be in the backcourt in both players' second seasons in Tuscaloosa. Former 5-star recruit and Miami Hurricanes guard Jalil Bethea joined Alabama via the transfer portal, and a healthy Latrell Wrightsell Jr. should also be back for 2025-26 after suffering a season-ending injury at the end of November. Alabama also lost top rebounder Grant Nelson and big man Clifford Omoruyi, so two more transfer portal acquisitions in Taylor Bol Bowen (from Florida State) and Noah Williamson (from Bucknell) will look to shore things up in the frontcourt. On Tuesday, USA TODAY Sports' four-person expert panel of Paul Myerberg, Jordan Mendoza, Eddie Timanus, and Erick Smith unveiled their updated early Top 25 rankings on where things stand following the NBA draft and the closing of the transfer portal. Alabama cracked the top 10 at No. 8. While that's down two spots from their previous ranking, the panel hadn't updated their early Top 25 since the day after the Florida Gators defeated Houston for the national championship three months ago. By comparison, Alabama had fallen out of the top 15 in other way-too-early Top 25 rankings, including at ESPN where they'd dipped to No. 24 prior to Philon's decision to withdraw from the draft. Alabama was ranked one spot below BYU in USA TODAY Sports' updated rankings Tuesday, and one spot ahead of Rick Pitino's St. John's. The Crimson Tide will take on the Red Storm on Nov. 8 at Madison Square Garden. Bucks Make Major Mark Sears Announcement
Bucks Make Major Mark Sears Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In 112 seasons, the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program has had just three All-Americans. Of the trio, only one has made multiple All-America teams: guard Mark Sears. Advertisement Following the 2022 season, in which Alabama posted an uninspiring 19-14 record under third-year head coach Nate Oats, the Crimson Tide turned to the transfer portal for an immediate fix. Alabama came away with a 6-foot-1 guard from the Ohio Bobcats, with many questioning how the All-MAC honoree would transition to the SEC. Sears would go on to spend three seasons with the Tide, during which the SEC power won nine March Madness games. Sears made his first All-American team in 2023-24, making the second team after scoring a career high 21.5 points per game. Last season, Sears vaulted to All-American first-team while guiding Alabama to a second straight Elite 8 berth. The All-SEC guard went undrafted, but didn't last long on the open market, with the Milwaukee Bucks signing him following the conclusion of the final round. Advertisement On Thursday, the Eastern Conference club made it official, signing him on a Two-Way deal. Sears will look to carve out a role with a Milwaukee team featuring former NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. Alongside Sears, the Bucks will have Kevin Porter Jr., Vasilije Micic, AJ Green, Jamaree Bouyea, and former UConn Huskies star Andre Jackson Jr. at the point guard position. Gonzaga set to Battle Two Heavyweight Programs in Players Era Festival
Gonzaga set to Battle Two Heavyweight Programs in Players Era Festival originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Gonzaga's 2025–26 season is set to begin with two heavyweight matchups, as the Bulldogs will face Alabama and Maryland in the opening games of the inaugural Players Era Festival. These early contests offer a major opportunity for Gonzaga to prove itself on a national stage and get a real-time measure of how its retooled roster stacks up against elite-level competition. Advertisement The opener against Alabama on Monday, November 24, at 9:30 PM ET, 6:30 PM PT promises to be a high-octane battle. Under head coach Nate Oats, the Crimson Tide have emerged as one of the most consistently dangerous teams in college basketball. Known for their up-tempo offense and aggressive shot selection, Alabama presents a unique challenge for any opponent. Oats has built a culture of toughness and pace in Tuscaloosa, turning Alabama into a regular in the national conversation and a threat in the SEC and beyond. Gonzaga will follow that up with a showdown against Maryland the next night, Tuesday, November 25, at the same tipoff time. The Terps are now led by longtime head coach Buzz Williams. Though new to the sideline in College Park, Williams brings a wealth of experience and a gritty, hard-nosed style that has delivered success at multiple Power Five stops. With Maryland looking to reestablish itself as a force in the Big Ten and beyond, this early test will be a tone-setter for both programs. For Gonzaga, these games will be especially significant as the team introduces its new-look backcourt. Braeden Smith, a transfer who brings leadership and poise after a redshirt year with Gonzaga, pairs with promising young guard Mario Saint-Supery, recently signed from Spain, to form the Zags' latest backcourt tandem. Both will need to be at their best against the kind of length, athleticism, and defensive pressure that Alabama and Maryland typically bring to the table. The ability of Smith and Saint-Supery to handle the ball, control tempo, and make plays in tight moments will be critical to Gonzaga's chances of opening the season with a pair of wins. Advertisement The Bulldogs will also lean heavily on the frontcourt pairing of Braden Huff and Graham Ike, who return as one of the most skilled and productive interior duos in the country. Their combined ability to score inside, stretch the floor, and rebound effectively should create matchup issues for both Alabama and Maryland. If Huff and Ike can impose their will in the paint and dominate the glass, it could tilt the balance in Gonzaga's favor. These two early contests are more than just showcase games. They serve as an immediate barometer of where Gonzaga stands in its quest to return to the top tier of college basketball. With two powerhouse programs on deck, the Zags won't have time to ease into the season. The Players Era Festival will demand sharp execution, composure, and chemistry, and the performances of Gonzaga's backcourt and frontcourt leaders will likely determine how this early spotlight shines.
