Why 'Wedding Crashers' sequel hasn't happened: cinematographer

'Wedding Crashers 2' is long overdue. Cinematographer Julio Macat exclusively told The Post why he thinks a sequel to the 2005 comedy still hasn't been made 20 years later. 'I think it hasn't happened because of all the moving parts with the actors and availability, really,' the 68-year-old explained. 'Because it's hard for an actor to commit and say yes, I'm available on these dates.' The New York Post Macat doesn't think a sequel would work without Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson either. Advertisement 'I don't know who would be in a sequel. It's definitely a different movie if you don't have the main guys,' he noted. 'So it seems to me like you need those guys and maybe they're coming out of retirement or something interesting.' 8 Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson in 'Wedding Crashers.' ©New Line Cinema/Courtesy Everett Collection 'But I think it'd be really fun,' Macat added. 'I think it would be fun for every one to come back to the party to see what we've all learned in 20 years. Try to play it again. But I think what we learned on the fly was pretty cool and the result of it was worthy.' Since the original film's release, director David Dobkin has discussed ideas for a sequel with Vaughn, 55, and Wilson, 56 — but nothing has come to fruition. Entertainment in 2021. 'We'll see.' Wilson told Variety that same year: 'If we all agree that we have a good idea, then we're trying to make something good.' Vaughn, for his part, confirmed on 'Good Morning America' last year that he's open to making 'Wedding Crashers 2.' 'I think you just wanna make sure that if you are gonna do it, that there's a great story.' 'But do something that would be fitting for the time. So if they land on something that seems engaging — it's always a possibility.' Macat told The Post that he's mixed on making a 'Wedding Crashers' sequel. 'I mean, think about it, we got to that level together, and now we could pick it up from that level,' he said. 8 Julio Marcat at the 'Brave the Dark' premiere in January 2025. And when you try to force something, it's like dating an old girlfriend or boyfriend. You're like, 'Yeah, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but what the f–k? What am I thinking? It's all still there. It was good for about 10 minutes, and then it was like, oh, f–k.'' 8 Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson in 'Wedding Crashers' ©New Line Cinema/Courtesy Everett Collection The beloved film, which came out 20 years ago today, follows two divorce mediators (Vaughn and Wilson) who crash weddings to meet and seduce women. Why Vince Vaughn was scolded by ‘Wedding Crashers' cinematographer on set

Life imitated art when Vince Vaughn was filming 'Wedding Crashers.' In honor of the film's 20th anniversary, cinematographer Julio Macat is recalling the moment on set when he had to scold Vaughn, 55 — for excessive partying. 'I gave him sh-t one day because he was partying a little too hard,' Macat, 68, said. 'He showed up one day and you know, I've seen one bag under the eye, I've seen two bags under the eye.' 7 Vince Vaughn in 'Wedding Crashers.' ©New Line Cinema/Courtesy Everett Collection 'So first time I saw three bags under somebody's eye and I go, 'Vince, you got to get some sleep man. This is insane!'' Macat recounted. 'He got mad at me,' Macat said about Vaughn. 'Like, 'Oh, you know, you do your f–ing thing.'' However, their banter 'was all in good fun,' Macat noted. 'I think he's a really good guy,' the cinematographer added. 'We call each other cousins.' 7 Julio Macat in his interview with The Post. Macat was blown away by Vaughn and Wilson's improv during shooting. 'To do improvisation and to do that kind of acting on each other, there's very few actors who can do that successfully,' Macat stated. 'Improv is really tough. Any actor will tell you that to do it and not be dragging on or with uncomfortable pauses is a real trick. And these guys were masters at it.' 7 Isla Fisher, Vince Vaughn in 'Wedding Crashers.' ©New Line Cinema/Courtesy Everett Collection 7 Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson in 'Wedding Crashers.' ©New Line Cinema/Courtesy Everett Collection 'Vince and Owen had such a chemistry about them. And they were so on top of each other in a really good way that what we found out pretty soon was that the rehearsal was the best take,' he revealed. 'And then you keep trying to chase that to try to grab the same moments and the same moments of freshness.' Macat also spoke highly about his experience working with the film's other famous stars. 'Bradley Cooper was really trying. It was like if he was playing tennis, he was trying to hit as hard as the guys,' Macat said about Cooper, who had a supporting role as Sack Lodge. 'He was really approachable and really appreciative whenever we came up with a shot for him,' Macat explained. 'He was like, 'Oh, great, great. Yeah.' He raised his game.' 7 Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in 'Wedding Crashers.' ©New Line Cinema/Courtesy Everett Collection 'Rachel McAdams was awesome,' Macat added about the Oscar nominee, who played Claire Cleary. 'She was really in tune what she was trying to do.' The David Dobkin-directed comedy also featured Christopher Walken, Jane Seymour, Isla Fisher and Keir O'Donnell. In Aug. 2024, Vaughn — who has also starred in raunchy films such as 'Old School' and 'Couples Retreat' — explained why he thinks R-rated comedies are now on life support. 7 Julio Macat at the premiere of 'Because I Said So' in 2007. Getty Images 'They just overthink it,' he said of Hollywood during a 'Hot Ones' appearance. 'And it's like, it's crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, 'You have to have an IP.'' Vaughn cited the board game Battleship as an example of IP that became a 'vehicle for storytelling' due to its recognizable name. 'The people in charge don't want to get fired … so than they're looking to do something great, so they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone, that don't really translate,' he went on. 'But as long as they follow them, they're not going to lose their job because they can say, 'Well, look, I made a movie off the board game 'Payday,' so even though the movie didn't work, you can't let me go, right?''

I can't believe Stephen King likes this TV horror – it's not scary enough

Being dubbed the 'King of Horror' places an almost unfair level of expectation on Stephen King's output. In reality he's done much more than churn out jump scares. The only real horror in The Shawshank Redemption is the (spoilers for a film that's 30 years old) prison escape through a river of excrement. Yet delving into child abuse by way of scientific experimentation for the new eight-episode MGM+ show The Institute suggests its meant to be at least a little bit scary. Adapted from King's 2019 book of the same name, the show's director Jack Bender told Metro that the prolific writer liked what the production team were doing so much he opted to come on board with an executive producer credit. You might be left wondering what it was he liked so much. Bear in mind that this is someone (King) who mounted a lengthy legal battle against New Line Cinema for making such a pig's ear of adapting his short story into the 1992 film The Lawnmower Man that he no longer wanted his name anywhere near it. Yet this new adaptation hews closely to King's book. Maths prodigy Luke (Joe Freeman, of Martin Freeman progeny) is snatched in the night, along with the entire contents of his childhood bedroom, to be recreated in a windowless room in a government lab. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video This is a top-secret prison place for kids with special powers (telekinesis, telepathy), helmed by a shadowy group of operatives who are led by Mary-Louise Parker's unhinged Ms Sigsby. Luke has a location tracker stapled onto his ear and is expected to make nice with the other lab rats, all of whom want to escape but have mostly abandoned trying. Instead, they await being sent to the next part of the tortuous facility, ominously referred to as The Back Room. They've been hand-picked for their psychic powers to predict the future and avert catastrophe. But to achieve this they have to be ruthlessly tortured in scenes that will make you wince. They're told that after they complete the trial by experimentation, they will be released. In reality, this looks ever more unlikely. Meanwhile in nearby DuPray, Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) rolls into town and gets a job as the local nightknocker – a King invention that essentially seems to mean night watchman, but also involves a key lock thingamajig which is never entirely explained. The Institute is concerned with the clash between good, evil and those who are the latter but believe they're pursuing the former. But is it itself any good? So so. The Stranger Things comparisons might have already been headed off by the show's creatives, but they're still inevitable and unfortunately leaves this feeling derivative. The resemblance makes it seem this show is aping the Netflix hit, which does feel unfair given that the Duffer brothers have been paying homage to King all along, sampling everything from It's creepy small town Americana to the boyish 80s youth of Stand By Me. Filmed in Nova Scotia and with MGM (owned by Mr Bezos) money doing the talking, the show looks excellent and has locked in performances. But you can't help feeling it's phoned in. Plot points are seen coming a mile off and not enough work is done to get you to care much for the too-many characters – beyond the human impulse not to want to see children being tortured. Deputy TV Editor Tom Percival shares the creepiest TV you can stream now… The Haunting of Hill House . A detective investigates the murder and mutilation of a young boy. It might be another unfairness to lay all of this at the TV show's feet, given that it's an adaptation of a King novel that reviews at the time said felt like a result of his prolific output. It was all too familiar, like he had tossed in a bunch of scraps from previous dishes (Firestarter, Carrie, Needful Things). More Trending Despite what was said up top about unfair expectations, you can't help feeling a touch disappointed given this has King's seal of approval. Where are the bone-chilling creeps and fearsome embodiments of evil? It's a noble tale of how we don't do right by kids and so are ourselves the baddies. You just wish it cared a bit more about teasing out the monstrosity rather than the message. View More » The Institute will premiere exclusively in the UK on MGM+ on the 13th July. Got a story? The Original TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Movie Heads Back to Theaters for 35th Anniversary — GeekTyrant

Before superhero blockbusters took over the multiplex, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles snuck into theaters and kicked off a cultural phenomenon. Now, 35 years later, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo are coming back… at least for a limited time. And fans are getting more than just a nostalgic revisit. Directed by Steve Barron and produced by New Line Cinema, the original film wasn't just a huge hit, it was a landmark. With the help of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the Turtles were brought to life using state-of-the-art animatronic suits and puppetry. The result was a gritty, funny, and surprisingly faithful adaptation that fans of the franchise loved! Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt summed up the spirit of the event, saying, 'Few titles in recent memory have as large and rabid a fanbase as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's Turtle Time, and Fathom Entertainment is proud to be part of Turtlemania and help make possible a 35th anniversary celebration like no other on the big screen. Moviegoers across generations will revel in the action and excitement.' Adding to the experience, audiences will also get to see Turtles Unmasked, a brand-new featurette that digs into the behind-the-scenes madness of making the film. Produced alongside the team behind TMNT: Evolution, Mutation & Reboot, the mini-doc includes never-before-seen archival footage, extended scenes that didn't make the final cut, and even personal video diary footage from director Steve Barron reflecting on the film's production challenges. Kevin Costner's ‘Horizon: An American Saga' Star Gives Filming Update

Kevin Costner in "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1." Danny Huston, who plays a major role in Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga has given a promising update about the beleaguered Western film series. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was released on June 28, 2024, and struggled for five weeks at the box office. When the film ended its theatrical run in early August, it only earned $29 million in North American theaters and $9.7 million internationally for a worldwide domestic gross of $38.7 million against a $100 million production budget before prints and advertising Variety reported. Costner spent $38 million of his own money to finance Horizon, per Variety, alongside two unnamed private investors. Horizon Chapter 1 not only prematurely completed its theatrical run on Aug. 8, 2024, but the planned Aug. 16, 2024, release of Horizon Chapter 2 was postponed by Costner's production company and distributor New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. With an initial release date set a mere six weeks after Horizon Chapter 1 was released in theaters in late June of 2024, Costner still proceeded to complete Horizon Chapter 2 and held the film's worldwide premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 7, 2024. After that, Costner staged Horizon Chapter 2's U.S. premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 7. While the release date of Horizon Chapter 2 remains in limbo, Huston — who plays Col. Albert Houghton in Costner's Western saga — has a positive update for fans who want to see the actor-director-producer see the film series through its completion. During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Danny Huston — the son of the late legendary director John Huston and brother of fellow actor Anjelica Huston — said that Costner has largely completed filming Horizon Chapter 3. "I think he's got a lot of Chapter 3 in the can, actually. But there's no stopping him,' Danny Huston told Screen Rant of Costner's progress on the third Horizon: An American Saga movie. 'He's just unbelievable, and this dream of his is coming to life in a spectacular way. It's just extraordinary what he does.' Kevin Costner Has Made No Secret That He's Looking For More 'Horizon' Investors Despite the setbacks surrounding Horizon: An American Saga Chapters 1 and 2, Kevin Costner has pressed on with completing his film series, saying during a Deadline Contenders panel for Horizon Chapter 1 on Nov. 16, 2024, that he was searching for more investors. 'I'm hoping, I'm dreaming, I'm meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they're all hiding in the shadows,' Costner said during the Deadline Contenders event, adding that he was working on Horizon Chapter 3 with an eye on making Chapter 4. 'I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I'm going to make it and then I'm going to make the fourth one,' Costner said at the Deadline Contenders panel. 'And if you want to say 'the end' at that point, then that's the end.' Apart from the filming setbacks, Horizon: An American Saga has also been weathering some legal issues surrounding the production. The Hollywood Reporter reported in early May that Horizon Series (which is Costner's loan-out firm), New Line Cinema and City National Bank were involved in a legal battle. Then in late May, a stunt double filed a lawsuit against the production, 'alleging sexual harassment, hostile work environment and intentional infliction of emotional distress,' NBC News reported. According to NBC News, the stunt double alleges in the complaint that a ''violent, unscripted, unscheduled' rape scene unfolded during filming in Utah on May 2, 2023." Kevin Costner's Horizon: Chapter 2's release date is yet to be announced.
