Nick Wright explains why LeBron James-Karl-Anthony Towns trade can change game for New York Knicks

Sportscaster Nick Wright recently took part in an in-depth discussion surrounding LeBron James' next stop and shared his viewpoint. On his podcast, 'What's Wright? With Nick Wright', he elaborated on all the factors that work in the New York Knicks' favor if they choose to trade Karl-Anthony Towns for LeBron James. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now From cost factor to strengthening the team's defense, he shed light on all the positive things that can happen with the trade for the Knicks. Rumors about LeBron James leaving the Los Angeles Lakers are overflowing in NBA circles. Amidst these rumors, Wright's dissection of the LeBron-Towns trade can provide the Knicks the perspective they need to make a blockbuster trade decision. Nick Wright fans trade rumors with his dissection of LeBron James-Karl-Anthony Towns trade 'I don't think he finishes as a Laker' - Will LeBron request a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers? Retirement, player option, or new team? The buzz around LeBron James' next move refuses to slow down. Amidst all the murmur around the Los Angeles Lakers' superstar's future, Nick Wright has come up with his perspective. He elaborated on how the New York Knicks' decision to trade Karl-Anthony Towns for LeBron James can rejuvenate the organization. Talking about the pros, he said: 'The pros, in my opinion, are oddly by adding a guy in year 23, a 40 guy who's going to be 41, you actually get better defensively for two reasons. One is it's more Mitchell Robinson minutes instead of Town. So that's definitive, you know, that helps you a lot defensively. But also, as LeBron showed last year, once they got Luca, if he's not the primary offensive creator, he still has the ability to be a good, not great defender like he once was, but a good defender if that's where he can put his energy. ' He further said: 'The other sneaky pro for the Knicks is, do they actually want to move towns before he's he wants this next mega extension when they traded all those picks for Bridges and you're going to have to extend him and you've already extended OG and you're obviously in the Jaylen Brunson business.' LeBron James & Karl-Anthony Towns at play-in tournament (Image Source: Getty Images) He further continued, 'Like does the fact that LeBron would be short term act is that actually a positive because you don't want to you know have the big money associated with Carl Anthony Towns when there are, I think, legitimate real concerns of if our two best players are Brunson and Towns are we good enough defensively ever to win four rounds. I think those are all real, legitimate discussions.' Wright's thoughts largely revolved around the role LeBron can play in the New York Knicks, without the team needing to make a long-term commitment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Also, moving Karl-Anthony Towns can help the Knicks manage costs, as they have already signed hefty deals with Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges, per Basketball Network. He further moved to how it is the right time to make the deal, as the trade leading to LeBron moving to an Eastern Conference team can improve the Knicks' chances to win the title after 52 years. Wright pinpointed, 'The Celtics are off the chessboard. The Pacers are off the chessboard, and the Bucks don't know where they are on the chessboard. We're already the favorites in the conference. We haven't won a championship in 52 years. What if we go for it (LeBron-Karl-Anthony trade)? It certainly is a worthy legitimate conversation, just like it.' Here is Wright's complete discussion: Nick Wright: Knicks should TRADE KAT to Lakers for LeBron James | What's Wright NBA In the discussion, Wright also pulled out LeBron James' longtime agent Rich Paul's statement to ESPN, where he explained LeBron's mindset for the coming season. Rich Paul had told ESPN, as per Shams Charania's report dated June 29, 2025: 'LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with [governor] Jeanie [Buss] and [general manager] Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive, and want what's best for him." So, the trick right now lies in finding the correct team for LeBron James, which can help him have a ring before he hangs up his sneakers. And currently, the best win-win situation is possible to achieve with the LeBron James-Karl-Anthony Towns trade. According to Wright, the only con of the trade will be LeBron's age, who will be playing his season 23, and is about ten years older than Karl-Anthony Towns. Also Read: If all factors as indicated by Wright are taken into consideration, James may consider exercising his player option and ask for a move to the Eastern Conference, with the New York Knicks as his next stop. Whether the trade will happen or not remains unclear till any negotiation moves are reported from either party.

Knicks sign high-flying Japanese guard nicknamed 'Tokyo Drift'

The New York Knicks' Summer League team will have one rather exciting, unexpected character on the roster. Yudai Baba will suit up for the Knicks. He's a Japanese star with two fun nicknames. One commentator in Australia nicknamed him "Tokyo Drift." And his signature move is known as the "Baba Boom." Advertisement Baba is 29 years old, and while he has played in the NBA G League, he has never reached the NBA. He most recently has played in Japan's top division. He also played college hoops in Japan. Baba has won the Japanese top division title twice, and he was Final MVP in 2019. He also won an NBL title in Australia in 2021. MORE: Lakers make 'insane' decision that could jeopardize future with LeBron, Luka In Baba's lone G League season (2019-20), he averaged 6.3 points per game. Baba has been a consistent performer for the Japanese national team, too. His father was also a national team player in Japan. Advertisement The Knicks probably are just testing out an overseas possibility who will have a tough time making it through. But maybe if he throws down enough "Baba Booms," he'll have a chance. Knicks should beg Tom Thibodeau for second chance in failed coach search

The New York Knicks' decision to fire Tom Thibodeau last month was somewhat surprising after a run to the Eastern Conference Finals, but it wasn't completely panned as a bad decision. Without knowing their plan to move forward, many people (myself included) thought it a necessary move for the team to take its next step toward contention. That was before we knew the team didn't have much of a plan at all -- and before the Eastern Conference was completely altered by Tyrese Haliburton's torn Achilles in the NBA Finals, which followed Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles against the Knicks in the East finals. Before the team inched towards the most uninspired decision to replace Thibodeau with Mike Brown, as ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday. Now, I'm thinking the Knicks might want to hit up old Tom to apologize for how things ended, beg him to take them back and pray he accepts. Look, I'm obviously joking here (kinda). I still think Thibodeau was too rigid with his lineups and offensive schemes, and who knows what happened behind the scenes with players who might've needed a new voice. But my goodness, New York, at least have someone in mind who isn't already employed when you make the massive decision to fire your most winningest coach from the last 20 years. Instead, what the Knicks did was target Jason Kidd -- apparently missing the memo that he already coaches the Dallas Mavericks -- and that failed attempt to lure him away led to a bizarre path of going after four more coaches from other teams. They even interviewed Dawn Staley, despite her having no apparent interest in leaving South Carolina. Now, they're about to land on Brown, who was clearly not their first option, and suddenly giving Thibs a call doesn't sound like such a bad idea after all. To be clear, I have no problem with Brown. In fact, I like him. I think he's a fine coach who got a raw deal in Sacramento when the Kings fired him 31 games into his third year after leading them to back-to-back winning seasons and their first playoff appearance in 17 years. He's not necessarily a downgrade from Thibodeau. I'm just not sure he's much of an upgrade either -- if at all. Which makes this whole process incredibly flawed. You don't fire the coach who just took you to the ECF to make a high-floor, low-ceiling hire. You only make that move if you plan to take a big swing on a young coach with loads of potential or someone who's already won. Sticking with the baseball analogy, the Knicks didn't strike out here, but hiring Brown is more like a bloop single. After years of finally looking like a competent organization, everything about this search has been mind-boggling. The Knicks better hope Brown can reach his first ECF since his time with Lebron James in Cleveland, because anything short of that will make it hard to live down the decision to fire Thibodeau. Damian Lillard landing spots The Bucks' decision to waive and stretch Damian Lillard's contract in order to sign Myles Turner may very well turn out to be a mistake for Milwaukee, but there's no denying it'll help another team down the line at some point. Lillard is now a free agent, and once he's done rehabbing his torn Achilles, he'll be able to join the team of his choice without having to worry about money due to the Bucks still paying him. But where will the nine-time All-Star go? FTW's Charles Curtis compiled a list of the top five landing spots, and while I hand't considered his top option, it makes so much sense: the Boston Celtics. And the reason is very simple: "The timeline aligns perfectly: Jayson Tatum and Lillard can rehab their Achilles injuries and then contend again in 2026." Check out the full list here. Knicks Find Tom Thibodeau Replacement, Reportedly Hiring Mike Brown as Next HC

The New York Knicks' search for their next head coach is over. Two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown is expected to be tabbed to be New York's next head coach, ESPN reported Wednesday. Brown seemingly became the favorite to get the job over the last week or so. He recently had a second interview for the position, making him the first known candidate at the time to get a second interview. The Knicks also talked with former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins and assistants James Borrego of the New Orleans Pelicans and Micah Nori of the Minnesota Timberwolves about the position. Brown led the Sacramento Kings to the playoffs in 2023, their first appearance since 2006, and was voted coach of the year. He went 107-88 there in 2 1/2 seasons before he was fired during this past season. Brown also won the coaching award in 2009 with Cleveland and is 454-304 in his career. Tom Thibodeau was fired June 3 despite leading the Knicks to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Like Brown, he also won NBA Coach of the Year honors with two teams. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
