Phil's joy in EastEnders as Nigel returns to the Square - and a decision is made

Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) was left concerned in EastEnders tonight when he learnt that Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) had gone missing. Nigel moved back to Scotland with wife Julie Bates (Karen Henthorn) last week, after Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) contacted her with Nigel's whereabouts. Julie had no idea that Nigel had left because he'd been diagnosed with young-onset dementia, and had taken to social media to try and track him down. In tonight's episode, a confused Nigel made his way back to London, where Phil learnt that Julie had no idea where he was. Thankfully, Callum Highway (Tony Clay) and Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) managed to track him down and bring him home. With Nigel safe, Phil and Julie soon began to row about where Nigel should stay, before Nigel interrupted, insisting that it should be his decision. To Phil's joy and relief, Nigel decided that he wanted to stay in Walford with him. This was difficult for Julie to accept, but after some thinking she accepted that London was where Nigel felt most comfortable, and decided to set him free. Meanwhile, Phil was also struggling, with his brain and heart having two different ideas about how best to deal with Nigel's sitaution. Fortunately, Yolande was on hand to offer some solid advice when Phil pointed out that while Nigel didn't want to leave, he also didn't want to hurt Julie. As Phil argued that Julie wasn't equipped to care for Nigel, Yolande suggested that she needed someone to guide her, which gave Phil an idea. More Trending Following Julie's decision to leave Nigel with Phil, he revealed that she didn't have to go, and offered her the spare room so that she could stay with Nigel. It was clear that Nigel was thrilled by this, as he immediately took her bags upstairs. EastEnders icon returns to BBC soap just days after quitting in huge U-turn

EastEnders aired the comeback of a familiar face in worrying scenes on the BBC soap on Monday night, just days after two characters appeared to leave Walford for good An EastEnders legend's return was confirmed on the BBC soap on Monday, just days on from them appearing to exit the show for good. ‌ In quite a U-turn amid worrying scenes, two characters who appeared to bid farewell to the soap last week made their return in the latest episode. Nigel Bates and his wife Julie had decided to leave just days ago, amid Nigel's dementia battle. ‌ Julie had wanted her husband, who had disappeared months earlier, to go back home with her where she could care for him. Nigel decided to leave Walford much to the sadness of his pal Phil Mitchell, who Nigel has lived with since his comeback in December. ‌ So when Nigel's condition continued to deteriorate recently, with Phil struggling to care for his friend, the arrival of Julie changed things. Julie had not known where her husband was for a while after he fled without a word. When Julie found out the truth she came to see him and vowed to take him home. Nigel left with Julie in episodes that aired a week ago, with it teased this was an exit for both characters. Julie soon shared the news to those in Albert Square that Nigel had gone missing again. Just days after they planned to move on and start again, Nigel found his way back to Walford while in a confused state. After becoming scared on a tube train, he was found at the station in Walford by Callum Highway and Yolande Trueman who took him back to Phil's home. Julie was relieved to see him again, but it raised questions about Nigel's future and where he should be. Ultimately it was Nigel who decided he wanted to stay in Walford, with Julie staying by his side. ‌ This appears to confirm the characters will stay for the time being, while the future of the plot and for the characters has yet to be revealed. It was revealed recently that Julie would be staying on the show and that it would not be a brief visit. Actress Karen Henthorn reprised her role as Julie after decades away recently, and she spilled all on her comeback. She shared: "It's very surreal to be back in Albert Square after 27 years and working with the delightful Paul Bradley again - it's scary how fast the time has gone!" She went on: "Julie has got some awful surprises ahead of her after the initial relief she feels to discover Nigel is still alive. It's been great to film with Paul and Steve (McFadden), who are such lovely actors, as Julie discovers Nigel's dementia diagnosis and why he chose to hide it from her.' Dementia - the most common form of which is Alzheimer's - comes on slowly over time. As the disease progresses, symptoms can become more severe. But at the beginning, the symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for normal memory issues related to ageing. The You can refer to these above. For example, it is normal for an ageing person to forget which word to use from time-to-time, but difficulties having conversation would be more indicative of dementia. Katie Puckering, Head of Alzheimer's Research UK's Information Services team, 'As you get older, it takes longer for you to recall, or you really have to think; What was I doing? Where was I? What distracted me? Was it that I had to let the dog out? And then you find the keys by the back door. 'That process of retrieving the information is just a bit slower in people as they age. 'In dementia, someone may not be able to recall that information and what they did when they came into the house. 'What may also happen is they might put it somewhere it really doesn't belong. For example, rather than putting the milk back in the fridge, they put the kettle in the fridge.'

EastEnders devastation as news about Nigel reaches Phil

There's panic ahead for Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in EastEnders next week as word reaches him that his close friend Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) has gone missing. Phil has been acting as Nigel's carer in recent months amid his worsening dementia symptoms, but their world was upended earlier this week with the arrival of Nigel's estranged wife Julie Bates (Karen Henthorn) in Walford. As actress Karen Henthorn reprised her role after 27 years, fans of the BBC soap saw her character heartbreakingly find out that Nigel's desire not to burden her with his dementia diagnosis was the real reason he'd walked out on their marriage. Following some emotional scenes, which saw Nigel fail to recognise his wife, Julie then told a devastated Phil that she would be taking Nigel back home to Scotland to care for him there. Thursday's episode appeared to serve as an exit for Nigel and Julie as they left Walford together – but spoilers for next week have revealed their story is not over yet. As we return to Walford on Monday, Julie arrives back at Phil's without Nigel, and Phil is worried when she informs him that Nigel is AWOL. Upon hearing the news, Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick), Callum Highway (Tony Clay) and Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) then launch a frantic hunt for him. More Trending Fortunately, it isn't long before they manage to track Nigel down and bring him back to No.55 – but tensions between Julie and Phil soon flare up again, as they butt heads about what should happen next. Jay and Yolande try to reason with Julie and Phil respectively, but will they manage to make the pair reach some sort of compromise about Nigel's future care?
