Al-Arabi signs Belgian striker Ngoyi as Christopher faces possible exit
KUWAIT CITY, July 29: Al-Arabi Club officially announced the signing of their fifth foreign player, Belgian striker of Congolese descent Julian Ngoyi, who joins from Belgian side Mechelen to strengthen the team's attacking options for the upcoming season. At 27 years old, Ngoyi is versatile, capable of playing both as a central striker and on the wings. His career includes stints in England, Switzerland, Turkey, and Belgium, having represented clubs such as Stoke City, Swindon Town, Grasshopper Club Zürich, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Kasimpasa. Ngoyi has also featured for Belgium's youth national teams, including five appearances for the U21 side. Al-Arabi aims to leverage Ngoyi's international experience and physical prowess to boost its offensive firepower in the new campaign. Ngoyi becomes the fifth foreign professional in Al-Arabi's squad, joining French-Guinean Hassimi Fadiga, Ugandan Kenneth Ssemakula, and Nigerians Ayano Ewuala and Christopher John. Meanwhile, with the departures of Hassan Hamdan and Algerian Sofiane Bouchare, Portuguese coach Marco Alves is keen on signing a new defender. Jordanian international Abdullah Nassib is reportedly on Al-Arabi's shortlist for the position, though he has also attracted offers from Iraqi clubs Al-Zawraa and Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya. Should Al-Arabi finalize a deal with Nassib or another defender, Nigerian Christopher John is expected to leave the club ahead of the new season. Al-Arabi is currently training twice daily at its camp in Abu Dhabi, which began last week. The team will hold a final training session this evening ahead of their season opener tomorrow against UAE side Hatta Club. The squad is preparing for an August 12 playoff match against Maldivian club Maziya S&RC, part of the Asian Challenge League, to be held in the Maldives. Before departing for the Maldives on August 8, Al-Arabi will play a friendly against the UAE's Baniyas Club on August 6. Coach Alves is emphasizing training in humid conditions to help players acclimate to the high humidity typical of the Maldives throughout much of the year.

Nigerians lead the way in UK fashion visas according to report
New data has shown that Nigerians make up the majority of accepted British visas in relation to fashion when compared to people from any other country. According to the Telegraph's analysis of official data, there have been 291 Nigerian applications for fashion visas between 2019 and 2014, the highest number among all countries. This was followed by 67 Chinese applicants. Fashion-related visa applications from Nigeria rose from three in 2019 to 145 in 2024. Meanwhile, over the same period, the British Fashion Council (BFC) has endorsed 71 Nigerian applications, also more than any other nationality. The BFC has been granted the power to endorse applications on behalf of the UK's Home Office, which then signs-off on the visas. The council receives around two million pounds a year from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to promote British fashion and, in recent years, has set about diversifying the local fashion industry. The increase comes as part of a broader surge in talent-related visa applications from Nigeria, with most applying via the route for 'literature'. Since 2019, Nigerians have made 729 applications across artistic global talent categories in the UK, the Telegraph reported. Just 59 percent of them are endorsed.

In a renewed advisory targeting visa misuse, the United States has cautioned Nigerians against attempting to travel to the country with the primary aim of giving birth, a practice commonly referred to as birthright citizenship. The United States has issued an advisory cautioning Nigerians against traveling to the country with the primary intention of giving birth. Consular officers are instructed to deny visas if they suspect applicants' intentions related to exploiting birthright citizenship. According to the U.S. Department of State, using a visitor visa for the sole purpose of obtaining U.S. citizenship for a child born on American soil is considered visa fraud and could lead to automatic denial of entry or future visa ineligibility. U.S. consular officers are under strict instructions to assess an applicant's travel intent, and any suspicion that a Nigerian applicant is seeking to exploit the birthright citizenship provision—whereby any child born in the U.S. automatically becomes a citizen—could result in a rejected visa application. The State Department emphasized that ' traveling to the U.S. primarily to give birth' is not a permissible reason under the B1/B2 (tourist or business) visa category. The statement which was issued by the US Mission in Nigeria via their X (formerly Twitter) page said " Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted. Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent" Trumps move to end birthright citizenship The warning comes amid heightened scrutiny of global birth tourism trends, and as Washington tightens its immigration controls. While birthright citizenship remains a constitutional right in the U.S. under the 14th Amendment, the U.S. government maintains that visa applicants must demonstrate credible, lawful reasons for their visits. Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed his intention to sign an executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship, a constitutional right enshrined in the 14th Amendment, which guarantees U.S. citizenship to anyone born on American soil, regardless of their parents' immigration status. Trump had insisted that for a baby to become a citizen, ' At least one parent will have to be a citizen or a legal resident.' The announcement has triggered intense legal scrutiny and widespread controversy, as constitutional scholars and civil rights groups argue that such an executive action would likely face immediate legal challenges and be struck down by the courts for violating the Constitution. The move is particularly significant for Nigeria, which ranks among the top countries with citizens seeking birthright citizenship for their children in the U.S. U.S. authorities are urging Nigerians to ensure transparency and compliance with visa regulations to avoid sanctions, deportations, or long-term bans. Meanwhile, a recent Supreme Court decision has cleared the path for President Donald Trump's controversial executive order ending birthright citizenship to take effect, as legal challenges continue in lower courts.
