CBI books railway officials for corruption in Gati Shakti project

The CBI has registered an FIR against senior officials of Northern Railways (NR) and North Eastern Railway (NER) posted in Lucknow and Varanasi for allowing the unhindered passage of irregular bills from a Gati Shakti project contractor in exchange for bribes, officials said on Tuesday (July 15, 2025). The central probe agency has cited instances of alleged corruption in the Lucknow and Varanasi offices of the Railways in the centre's flagship project, Gati Shakti, in Bhadohi, granted to Praveen Kumar Singh of Tangent Infratech Pvt Limited and Sikander Ali, they said. The project was conducted under the supervision of Vivek Kushwaha, Deputy Chief Engineer of Gati Shakti, who is posted in Northern Railways, Lucknow. Besides Kushwaha and Singh, the CBI has also booked the New Delhi-based company Tangent Infratech Pvt Limited and an employee, Jimmy Singh, who was allegedly involved in one of the multiple bribe transactions listed by the CBI in its FIR. The probe agency has named several officers of NER, including Senior Divisional Engineer Rakesh Ranjan, Office Superintendent in the DRM office, Manish, Senior Section Engineer (Works) Abhishek Gupta, Accounts Section Head Yogesh Gupta, and Senior Clerk in the office of Assistant Engineer, Sushil Kumar Rai. The CBI FIR registered on "source information" outlines a pattern of corruption in the two railway departments. The agency has flagged a bribe payment of ₹2 lakh to Ranjan in June this year, which was delivered by Jimmy Singh, ₹50,000 to Gupta in April, routine payments to Manish, Gupta and Rai, the senior clerk for expediting the passing of bills.

CBI arrests 2 railway officials in Rs 34k bribe case; caught red-handed in UP; contractor alleges demand for 2% commission

LUCKNOW: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two officials of Northern Railways — an Assistant Divisional Engineer and a Trackman posted at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 34,000 from a railway contractor. According to an official, the accused have been identified as Sanjeev Saxena, Assistant Divisional Engineer, and Akash, Trackman. They were caught red-handed by the CBI while accepting the bribe on the night of 4 July. The arrest was made after the CBI registered a case based on a complaint from a railway contractor. The complainant had been awarded a tender for railway track fitting work by the Moradabad Division of Northern Railways on 19 January 2024. In his complaint, the contractor alleged that Saxena demanded a 2% commission on the clearance of pending bills worth Rs 17.57 lakh, amounting to Rs 34,000. The CBI laid a trap and arrested both officials during the bribe transaction. Following preliminary questioning, both men were formally arrested on the morning of 5 July. They are expected to be produced before the Special CBI Court No. 1 in Ghaziabad later in the day. A CBI spokesperson said further investigation is underway.

‘Lack of announcements a deficiency in service': Railways told to pay Rs 7,000 to family that missed train

Ghaziabad: The district consumer forum has ruled that failure to provide proper information on train schedule through public announcements constitutes a "deficiency of service" under the Consumer Protection Act. The consumer commission made this observation while ordering the Ghaziabad railway station authorities and senior officials at Northern Railways to pay Rs 7,000 as compensation to a family that missed their train due to inadequate announcements. On Feb 29 last year, Muradnagar resident Anubhav Prajapati, along with his wife Priyanka and two children, missed the Chhattisgarh Express to Jhansi. The family had arrived at Ghaziabad railway station well before the train's scheduled departure at 3.20am and waited in the first-class lounge. After an announcement about a 40-minute delay, they moved to platform 3 at 3.25am. However, they found Ayodhya Express stationed there for over 45 minutes. As the clock ticked, there was no further announcement about their train. Railway authorities, who failed to furnish a written explanation, made an oral representation at the forum through their counsel. They argued that they could have allowed a ticket refund, but could not as the train wasn't running more than three hours behind schedule — a prerequisite for refunds under railway policy. The commission agreed while refund couldn't be granted on technical grounds, the railway's failure to make proper announcements to inform the family about the arrival of the train and its departure warranted compensation. "Since no evidence on the part of the railways has been presented on record to claim that there was a proper announcement, the commission treats this as a deficiency of service that resulted in missing the train and caused mental harassment to the passenger," the June 23 order stated. The commission asked the station superintendent, station master, divisional railway manager, and general manager of Northern Railway to pay the compensation within 45 days of the order.

Northern Railways and SBI jointly hand over a cheque of Rs 1 crore to the family of a deceased loco pilot from Moradabad Division

NEW DELHI: Highlighting the strength of institutional partnerships and employee welfare measures, Northern Railways and the State Bank of India (SBI) jointly handed over a cheque of Rs 1 crore to the family of a deceased loco pilot from the Moradabad Division on Saturday. The amount was disbursed as part of a Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) claim under SBI's Railway Salary Package. The late loco pilot was an account holder under SBI's Railway Salary Package-Diamond variant, which includes insurance coverage for railway personnel. Following the unfortunate demise of the late loco pilot, SBI, in coordination with Northern Railways, ensured that the insurance claim was processed swiftly and handed over to the family without delay. According to an official statement, the cheque was formally presented by the General Manager of Northern Railways in the presence of the General Manager of SBI Delhi Circle, senior railway officials, SBI representatives, and the family of the deceased. "The initiative is a direct outcome of the Railway Salary Package Agreement signed between Northern Railways and SBI Delhi Circle on January 2, 2025", a railway official said. Speaking at the event, officials from both Northern Railways and SBI emphasised their shared commitment to employee welfare and the importance of standing by families during times of loss.

Delhi HC issues notice to Railway, DUSIB on PIL against notice for demolition of settlement colony on track

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): The Delhi High Court has issued notice to Northern Railways and others in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the demolition notice for a settlement colony (Chander Shekhar Azad) constructed along the railway track in the Wazirpur area. The division bench of Justices Tejas Karia and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta on Monday issued notice to Northern Railways and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). The High Court has granted them one week to file their affidavits. Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has also been impleaded as a respondent at the oral request of the counsel for the petitioner. After issuing notices, the matter was listed for a hearing on July 3, 2025. NGO Shine Women Welfare Association has moved a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking quashing of demolition notices of May 19, 2025 and June 05, 2025. It has also sought an order to provide rehabilitation to the affected parties before taking any coercive action against Chander Shekhar Azad Colony residents. During the earlier hearing, the counsel for Northern Railways showed certain photographs supporting the submission that the illegal encroachments along the railway tracks are so dangerous. A number of those constructions obstruct visibility and traffic signals, which can cause a serious risk of train accidents, the counsel said. Almost all structures across the railway track are built up to the first floor, and there is not sufficient distance between those structures and the railway track, the council added. It was also submitted that the demolition action is being carried out under the directions passed by a Division Bench of this Court in another petition. Counsel for DUSIB submitted that even according to the policy sought to be invoked by the petitioner, no protection can be granted where the demolition action is being carried out on the basis of a judicial order. A PIL has been moved through advocates Anuradha Singh and Rishi Nandy. The petitioner has stated that this notice calls for the eviction of residents of Chander Shekhar Azad Colony, Wazirpur Industrial Area, citing safety hazards to railway operations. The demolition drive began on June 2, 2025. Counsel Anuradha Singh contended that these demolitions are being carried out arbitrarily, without any form of rehabilitation, in violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, and contrary to established legal and policy safeguards. The plea said the settlement, comprising more than 3000 houses, is officially listed at Serial No 100 in the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) list of 675 JJ Bastis. It added that most residents are engaged in low-income occupations such as domestic work, vending, and daily wage labour. A joint survey was conducted in 2015 by the Respondents, during which the residents submitted necessary documents to establish their eligibility for rehabilitation under the Delhi Slum and JJ Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy, 2015, the plea stated.
