Hope fire grows around 200 acres remaining uncontained
Jul. 13—The Hope fire 5 miles southwest of Northport, Washington grew to 6,526 acres, according to a Sunday news release. Containment remains at 0% but 657 people are working on beating back the flames. The Hope fire started around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and quickly spread with an estimate on Saturday morning putting it at 6,365 acres. Two primary residences are confirmed to be lost to the blaze, Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 8 spokesperson Thomas Kyle-Milward previously said to the Spokesman-Review. There are no damage estimates. The news release said that on Sunday crews would focus on improving lines on the western and eastern sides of the fire, securing homes to the north and mopping up to the south. Evacuation levels of 1, 2 and 3 remain in effect and the public is still advised to stay out of the immediate fire area. Two evacuation centers are open with the Animal Evacuation Center at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds and the Red Cross Evacuation Center at Kettle Falls Middle School only open on an on-call basis. Hope fire size increases to 6,365 acres with no containment
Jul. 12—The Hope fire 15 miles north of Kettle Falls and 5 miles southwest of Northport has increased in size. Updated estimates for the fire put the total at 6,365 acres Saturday morning, up by nearly 750 acres from Friday morning's estimates. It remains 0% contained. The increase in acres is primarily in areas where firefighters already established an indirect line, a fire control line constructed a distance away from the main fire edge, Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 8 spokesperson Thomas Kyle-Milward said. "I don't think it's a situation where it's unexpected growth. It's just the fire kind of moving around in the box that firefighters are creating for it," Kyle-Milward said. The fire started around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and quickly spread north, driven primarily by wind, according to a news release from the Type 3 Incident Management Team. In a Saturday morning release, officials said fire personnel would work along the western side of the fire and dozer line construction, a fire suppression tactic involving bulldozing flammable vegetation, will begin in the northwest corner of the fire working toward Lael Road. Crews at the north head of the fire continue to establish a containment line, and to the south the Columbia River continues to act as a strong containment tool. On the fire's eastern flank, teams will continue mop-up operations around homes while crews patrol the area. Two primary residences are confirmed to be lost to the blaze, Kyle-Milward said. There are no damage estimates. So far, 546 personnel have responded to the fire. To allow for their safety, the public is encouraged to stay out of the immediate fire area. Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations remain in effect. The Red Cross Evacuation Center at the Kettle Falls Middle School is only open on an on-call basis. The Animal Evacuation Center at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds remains open. The cause remains under investigation. Celebrating workplace diversity through mural art
PORT KLANG: In today's work environment, employees often spend more time at the workplace than at home. This shift underscores the importance of creating a work setting that goes beyond its traditional function as merely a place to work. Recognising this, many organisations are placing greater emphasis on enhancing the aesthetics of their workplace. The modern workplace is no longer just a space to perform tasks, but it has evolved into an environment that inspires creativity, promotes well-being and reflects the identity of the organisation. These aspects have become fundamental in contributing to both individual success and overall well-being. Nurturing a balanced lifestyle becomes a crucial foundation for enhanced productivity and satisfaction in both personal and professional life. One of the ways to bring life into working environment is through the integration of art. Art has the power to transform a dull workspace into an inspiring and stimulating environment. In embracing this spirit, Infinity Logistics & Transport Sdn Bhd took the initiative to paint a large mural at Warehouse D4, Northport Distripark Sdn Bhd (NDSB). NDSB is a distribution centre with warehousing, storage and other associated facilities managed by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, a subsidiary of MMC Port Holdings Bhd. This vibrant mural has transformed what was once an ordinary warehouse wall into a beautiful visual narrative that symbolises the shared values and strong partnership between Northport and Infinity Logistics. On June 17, 2025, a ceremony was held at Warehouse D4 to officially unveil the mural. Embracing the concept of 'Diversity', the mural, designed and painted by renowned local street artist Dr Caryn Koh, was completed in just 13 days. The artwork features four employees from both companies, representing different races and job functions. Depicted in a unified and dignified stance, the characters highlight the strength of diversity and the business synergies that exist between Northport and Infinity Logistics. Koh, was born in Kuala Lumpur and is currently based in Swindon, United Kingdom. A graduate of Dasein Academy of Art, she was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award in Fine Arts. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions across Malaysia, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. She has also painted murals in different regions including London, Bristol, Swindon, Leicester, Blackburn and the Lake District in the UK, as well as Malaysia, Spain, Germany, the Philippines and Jogjakarta. 'I would like to commend this proactive initiative by Infinity Logistics, which has invested their own resources to bring this project to life. The mural art project highlights the strong synergy between Northport and our business partner in a shared commitment towards creating a more conducive and engaging workplace. It is not just about the artwork, but it represents a deeper sense of belonging and unity among the employees of both companies as 'Economic Frontliners' serving the nation,' said MMC Ports CEO, Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof. 'Logistics and ports thrive because of the people who power them - working relentlessly to keep operations moving. This mural captures their unity, diversity and unwavering dedication, with every expression telling a story of resilience. 'The smile reflects passion, the eyes reveal determination, the sweat speaks of hard work and the body posture embodies strength. Through art, we breathe life into the industry, transforming aging spaces into symbols of identity and appreciation. By supporting Malaysian artists, we honour creativity while recognising the grit and perseverance of those who keep logistics and ports alive - because behind every movement, every milestone, every success, it is people who make it all possible,' said Infinity Logistics managing director, Datuk Seri Chan Kong Yew. 'This mural not only reflects our commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance values, but also demonstrates how public art can be a powerful medium for fostering shared awareness. It shows how we can integrate our port operations with creative and purposeful spaces that appreciate the workers who have contributed to our success,' said Northport CEO Fakhrul Azhar Tajudin.

KUALA LUMPUR: Avangaad Bhd, a Bursa Malaysia main market-listed marine transportation and offshore storage specialist, and Libra Perfex Precision Sdn Bhd secured a new contract from Northport (Malaysia) Bhd for RM66.8 million. Extending beyond its stable tenure-based portfolio, Avangaad is actively advancing growth avenues in the non-oil and gas (O&G) segments. These pivotal new contracts validate Avangaad's continued success in strengthening its port and tugboat operations portfolio. Further, Avangaad continues to build on its strong business momentum with Northport, a long-standing client since 2013. Avangaad's three existing 40-tonne Z-Peller harbour tugboats have been awarded a further two-year service extension, totalling an estimated RM18.9 million, reflecting Northport's continued confidence in Avangaad's operational and proven track record in port support services. In addition to the contract extensions, Avangaad has secured a new 5-year contract valued at RM47.9 million to provide daily charter services for 3 units of 50-ton Bollard Pull Z-Peller harbour tugboats, following its successful tender bid for the tugboat services. The contract includes an optional 5-year extension, potentially securing up to a decade of recurring revenue and showcasing Avangaad's long-term earnings visibility and order book strength. These awarded contracts mark Northport's continued trust in Avangaad for the 12th consecutive year. As a long-standing strategic partner to one of Malaysia's leading ports, Avangaad has consistently demonstrated its operational excellence and reliability in managing and operating critical marine assets for Northport. Avangaad executive director Datuk Wira Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin said these contract awards are a clear and robust endorsement of Avangaad's proven capability in delivering consistently high standards of service and reliability in marine operations. 'While we continue to maintain a presence in offshore storage, the newly secured contracts emphasise our expansion into non-O&G sectors. 'More importantly, they reiterate our potential to penetrate broader market segments and grow our base of recurring income. 'Our position continues to be validated as Malaysia's only maritime player offering four integrated lines of maritime services. As a diversified solutions provider, we are committed to serving our clients, whom we view as long-term partners, as we scale new heights. 'Capitalising on enhanced governance across Avangaad Group, we remain committed to deepening our sustainability focus. The scope encompasses essential daily charter services, rigorous vessel maintenance, advanced firefighting capabilities, and guaranteed round-the-clock operational availability, all of which are crucial for the efficient and safe conduct of port operations in Northport, Port Klang. These new and extended contracts come on the heels of Avangaad's successful upliftment from PN17 status, showcasing the company's sustained turnaround and strong market confidence. Avangaad remains focused on maintaining high vessel utilisation rates, generating robust cash flow, and implementing ongoing operational improvements, particularly within its expanding tugboat operations. The successful award of new long-term contracts reaffirms Avangaad's proven capabilities and growth potential in the Malaysian maritime sector.
