Man (20) allegedly wore bulletproof vest with loaded gun inside when gardaí stopped him

Craig McKeever (20) is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Gun seized by gardai in Dublin last night. Photo: An Garda Síochána Facebook A young man was wearing a bullet proof vest with a loaded handgun hidden inside when gardai stopped and searched him on a Dublin street, it is alleged. Craig McKeever (20) was arrested when the gun fell onto the ground in front of gardai, who fear it was related to an ongoing 'violent feud" in the city. He was refused bail when he appeared in Dublin District Court this evening charged over the gun seizure in the south of the city on Wednesday. Mr McKeever, from Dromard Road, Drimnagh is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Garda Niall White told Judge Susan Fay the accused was detained under the Offences Against the State Act at Kilmainham Garda station before being charged at 5.25pm yesterday. Objecting to bail, the garda said he saw the accused and another man getting into the back of a taxi at Turvey Avenue, Inchicore at 8pm on June 24. Gardai approached the cab, got a strong smell of cannabis and searched the two under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Mr McKeever was wearing a ballistic vest and when the gardai opened it, an army green coloured .22 calibre pistol fell from it onto the ground, Gda White said. While the accused was being arrested, the other man fled on foot and attempts to apprehend him were unsuccessful. In a preliminary examination, the pistol was found to be loaded with one round of ammunition. Gardai also seized the ballistic vest and €550 in cash Mr McKeever had on him. The garda said the area where the accused was stopped was a popular location for entering and exiting households and apartments and was also near a park frequented by children. He said the maximum sentence for the charge on conviction was 14 years. Gardai believed the gun seizure was related to an ongoing violent feud in the Dublin 8 area and the accused's family home had been burned out by a petrol bomb. Applying for bail, defence barrister Kevin McCrave said Mr McKeever was prepared to abide by conditions and would be under the garda 'spotlight' and 'effectively under house arrest' if released. He had always lived at his home address and family members including his father were in court to support him. The accused, who was presumed innocent, could be in custody awaiting trial for at least a year if refused bail, Mr McCrave said. The other man had been arrested, charged and bailed, he added. Judge Fay refused bail and remanded Mr McKeever in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on July 3, for DPP directions.

Sinn Féin TD denies 'tactical wee' after missing vote

Sinn Féin's Justice spokesperson says he missed a vote on his own amendment to the Offences Against the State Act - due to the need to answer nature's call. Matt Carthy said the Minister of State Niall Collins was able to ensure the passage of the legislation without any votes, describing the move as "petty". Deputy Carthy said these things happen, but the substantive point Sinn Féin wanted to make was that the government needed to accelerate the review into the law which he described as "outdated." Asked if it was a "tactical wee" in the words of cartoon character Bluey, Deputy Carthy said it was a tactical position on the part of the Minister of State, saying "it was an old fashioned political stroke all's fair in love and politics". "The Minister saw an opportunity to avoid a vote, and he took it." Sinn Féin has insisted that it would have abstained on the renewal of the Offences Against the State Act, but it was ultimately not put to a vote. Deputy Carthy had "stepped out" for a few minutes during the debate on the emergency measures that are renewed by the Oireachtas annually. When he returned, to an almost empty Dáil, he was told by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy that the matter had been dealt with. Mr Carthy previously said that the emergency legislation, which dates back 90 years, should not be used on an ongoing basis. He called for the the introduction of a modern legal framework to tackle organised crime and to protect jurors.

Second man arrested in follow-up operation after 3D-printed gun seized

Gardaí have arrested a second man in connection with the seizure of a firearm in Dublin on Tuesday night. While on routine patrol along Turvey Avenue, Inchicore, Dublin 8 at around 8pm on Tuesday night uniform Gardaí from Kilmainham (Community Engagement) Garda Station observed two males of interest entering a taxi. On stopping the taxi the Gardaí were met by a strong smell of cannabis. Both males were informed they were going to be searched under the provisions of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. One of the males was found to be wearing a ballistic vest and in possession of a substantial sum of money. As he was being searched, a .22 calibre pistol fell from being concealed in the ballistic vest. The firearm seized is now subject to full technical examination. Gardaí arrested the man in his 20s in connection with the seizure and detained him under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in Dublin. He has been charged in connection with the case and is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice (Court No. 4) on Thursday, June 26 at 10:30am. In the course of a follow-up operation on Wednesday, June 25, investigating Gardaí conducted a search of a residential property in Dublin's inner city. A second male, aged in his 20s, was arrested during the operation. He is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in the Dublin Region. Speaking about last night's seizure Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary said, "I want to acknowledge and commend the work of two uniform members of An Garda Síochána yesterday evening going about their duties diligently and proactively. "This was a timely intervention likely to have saved lives or prevented serious injury and is another dangerous firearm which has been taken off the streets of Dublin. "Gardaí across the Dublin region are on duty 24 hours a day, supporting local communities and working hard to An Garda Síochána's mission of keeping people safe'. Two men arrested after Gardai recover 3D-printed handgun in Dublin taxi

Detectives are investigating if the 3D-printed weapon recovered in the south-inner city is linked to criminals involved in a number of violent incidents last year. Gun seized by gardai in Dublin last night. Photo: An Garda Síochána Facebook The significant seizure follows the discovery of two similar firearms in Tipperary recently with gardaí concerned at the 'significant' development. The Harlot .22 calibre pistols can be homemade using a 3D printer and can also be manufactured without a serial number, making them untraceable. Detectives are investigating if the 3D-printed weapon recovered in the south-inner city is linked to criminals involved in a number of violent incidents last year. Uniformed gardaí attached to Kilmainham garda station intercepted a taxi in the Dublin 8 area and searched the vehicle. A passenger in the car, who is aged in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. The man has since been charged in connection with the case and will appear before the courts on Thursday. Gun seized by gardai in Dublin last night. Photo: An Garda Síochána Facebook News in 90 Seconds - June 25th Another man, also aged in his 20s, has also been arrested. In an earlier statement, a garda spokesperson said: 'While on routine patrol along Turvey Avenue, Inchicore, Dublin 8 at approximately 8pm last night, Tuesday, 24th June 2025, uniform Gardaí from Kilmainham (Community Engagement) Garda Station observed two males of interest entering a taxi. 'On stopping the taxi the Gardaí were met by a strong smell of cannabis. 'Both males were informed they were going to be searched under the provisions of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. 'One of the males was found to be wearing a ballistic vest and in possession of a substantial sum of money. 'The male in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the seizure and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in Dublin. 'The firearm seized is now subject to full technical examination.' One of the men arrested is not considered a major criminal but is related to men who have previously been linked to violent incidents in the Inchicore and Bluebell areas. The driver of the taxi is not suspected of any wrongdoing and was unaware that the weapon was being transported in the car. One line of inquiry is that it is linked to a dispute between criminals in the Dublin 8 and 12 areas which has been dormant in recent months following a spate of assaults and threats last year. A source told the Sunday World: 'This was great proactive work carried out by local uniformed gardaí and ensures that the weapon is out of the hands of criminal elements. 'It is a worrying and significant development. Criminals evolve with the latest technology and 3D printed weapons can effectively be homemade with the right equipment and are difficult to trace' It's understood in an unrelated seizure in Tipperary in recent weeks, gardaí recovered two Harlot pistols as well as ammunition. Only this week Europol warned that the use of 3D printed firearms had been observed in Northern Ireland and described this as an 'emerging concern'.. Speaking about last night's seizure Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary said: This was a timely intervention likely to have saved lives or prevented serious injury and is another dangerous firearm which has been taken off the streets of Dublin.'
