Two men jump from second floor in failed bid to escape immigration raid
KUALA LUMPUR: Two men jumped from the second floor of a shophouse in an attempt to evade arrest, while others faked unconsciousness during an Immigration Department raid here last night. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said their tactics proved futile as 60 immigrants were rounded up in the operation. One of the two Bangladeshis who leapt from the building pretended to have broken his leg, while others claimed to have applied for a card from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), he said. He said 28 officers were involved in the "Op Selera" and "Op Kutip" operations from 10pm to 2am, at a food court and two shophouses. "A total of 137 individuals were screened, and 60 were detained, comprising 17 Indonesian men, 20 Indonesian women, 18 Myanmar men, one Myanmar woman, three Bangladeshi men and one Pakistani man. "In the first raid at a food court on Jalan Cheras, 16 foreigners were detained; 30 in the second raid in Pudu; and 14 in the final raid at a shophouse on Jalan Raja Laut in Chow Kit," he added. All the suspects were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Depot for further action under Section 6(1)(c) or Section 15(1)(c). One Immigration Form 29 (Witness Summons) was also issued during the operation. – BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Desperate attempts to escape an immigration raid turned chaotic as two migrants jumped from a second-floor shophouse while others faked injuries or claimed UNHCR status. The Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department (JIM) detained 60 undocumented foreigners in a late-night operation. Kuala Lumpur JIM director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff confirmed the arrests, stating that 28 officers were deployed in 'Op Selera' and 'Op Kutip' from 10 pm to 2 am. The raids targeted a food court and two shophouses in Cheras, Pudu, and Chow Kit. 'One of the Bangladeshi men who jumped pretended to have a broken leg, while others claimed to hold UNHCR cards,' Wan Mohammed Saupee said. A total of 137 individuals were screened, with 60 detained—including Indonesians, Myanmar nationals, Bangladeshis, and one Pakistani. The operation saw 16 arrests at a Cheras food court, 30 in Pudu, and 14 in Chow Kit. All detainees were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Depot for processing under immigration laws. Scores of women among 236 held in Johor entertainment raid
JOHOR BARU: More than 200 illegal immigrants, primarily from Southeast Asia, including scores of women, were detained during a late-night enforcement operation conducted by the Johor Immigration Department. Immigration Deputy director-general (Operations) Jafri Embok Taha said the raid, dubbed Op Kutip, was carried out between 11.50pm and 2.15am following three weeks of surveillance and public tip-offs. A total of 236 illegal immigrants were detained, he said, adding that the sweep was carried out at two entertainment centres in Stulang Laut. Jafri said a total of 473 individuals, including locals, were screened during the operation. "The migrants attempted to flee and hide behind pillars and in concealed rooms. "However, our officers were well prepared and managed to round them up efficiently," he told the media after the crackdown early today. The detainees, aged between 17 and 40, included 111 Thai women and three Thai men, 43 Vietnamese women and 13 Vietnamese men, 23 Bangladeshi men, and 14 Indian men. Others arrested were 10 Pakistani men, seven Nepalese men, four Chinese men and one Chinese woman, four Laotian women, and three Indonesian men. They were held for offences under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for lacking valid passes or permits, and Section 15(1)(c) for overstaying. All detainees were taken to the Immigration Detention Depot at the Setia Tropika Immigration Complex for further action.

Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 extended to April 30 next year
KUALA LUMPUR: The Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 (PRM 2.0) has been extended to April 30 next year and will begin this May 19. Immigration Department deputy director-general (operations) Jafri Embok Taha said the repatriation programme offers foreigners without valid documents to voluntarily return to their original country. "At the same time, enforcement operations will carry on as usual even with the repatriation programme in force," he said during a media conference after attending Op Kutip at a shopping complex here today. Enforcement operations such as Op Kutip were vital in reducing the number of illegal immigrants in the country and to tackle the issues due to their presence, Jafri said, adding that 5,090 operations were conducted throughout the country with 67,574 individuals checked as of May 15. From that total, 1,886 were found to be United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) cardholders, while 19,193 illegals were detained, along with 680 employers for various immigration offences. "Another 15,422 illegals were detained at entry points attempting to either enter or leave the country, with 34,615 people being caught in the past five months," Jafri said, noting that there was a significant rise in arrests this year after the Immigration Department declared 2025 as its enforcement year. "We don't have an accurate number of how many illegals are out there, but based on the number of arrests, there is an increase compared to previously, with operations being conducted nearly daily throughout the country," he said. On the two-hour long operation today, he said that 964 people - 273 foreigners and 691 locals - were checked and 143 people arrested, 56 Indonesians, 32 Pakistanis, 26 Bangladeshis, 10 Indian and Myanmar nationals each, four Syrians, three Nepalis and an Afghan and a Chinese. "The 110 men and 33 women, aged 22 to 48, are suspected of not having valid identification documents, violating pass conditions, overstaying, holding unrecognised cards and other offences under the Immigration Act and will be placed in the Immigration Detention Depot for investigation and further action," he said. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had announced yesterday that the government agreed to extend the repatriation programme, which will begin this Monday till April 30, 2026 following the end of the first repatriation programme on March 31, after obtaining consent from supervisory agencies, including the Attorney-General's Chambers. – BERNAMA
