Johor immigration sweep nets 35 undocumented migrants
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department detained 35 foreigners in a series of raids on business premises here on Tuesday.
The multi-pronged operation, codenamed Op Minyak, Op Kutip, Op Selera, Op Belanja and Op Jaja, were carried out following public tip-offs on undocumented workers.
State Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the detainees, aged between 18 and 55, included 29 men and six women from Indonesia (14), Myanmar (8), Bangladesh (6), Pakistan (3), Thailand (2), India (1) and Afghanistan (1).
"They had committed various immigration offences including entering and staying in the country without valid documents, overstaying expired permits, and abusing social visit passes," he said today.
Five Malaysians business owners were issued with notices to assist investigations for harbouring the illegal foreigners.
The detainees were placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Detention Depot for processing.
Rusdi urged the public to keep reporting suspicious activities involving illegal immigrants.
"Enforcement will be ramped up to weed out those flouting immigration laws.
"There will be no compromise. We are committed to cracking down on undocumented migrants and employers who exploit them," he said.
