Johor immigration sweep nets 35 undocumented migrants

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department detained 35 foreigners in a series of raids on business premises here on Tuesday.
The multi-pronged operation, codenamed Op Minyak, Op Kutip, Op Selera, Op Belanja and Op Jaja, were carried out following public tip-offs on undocumented workers.
State Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the detainees, aged between 18 and 55, included 29 men and six women from Indonesia (14), Myanmar (8), Bangladesh (6), Pakistan (3), Thailand (2), India (1) and Afghanistan (1).
"They had committed various immigration offences including entering and staying in the country without valid documents, overstaying expired permits, and abusing social visit passes," he said today.
Five Malaysians business owners were issued with notices to assist investigations for harbouring the illegal foreigners.
The detainees were placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Detention Depot for processing.
Rusdi urged the public to keep reporting suspicious activities involving illegal immigrants.
"Enforcement will be ramped up to weed out those flouting immigration laws.
"There will be no compromise. We are committed to cracking down on undocumented migrants and employers who exploit them," he said.

Chow Kit a hotspot for undocumented migrants, 500 held since January

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department has detained around 500 undocumented migrants in Chow Kit since January. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said the area is considered a hotspot for foreigners in the capital. He said the arrests were the result of ongoing monitoring and operations by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department to tackle the issue of undocumented migrants. "Since January, operations have been intensified, and their effectiveness is evident as many foreigners now feel uncomfortable living illegally in this country. "Based on our statistics, Chow Kit is the main hotspot. "Operations are carried out there every two weeks, and during each operation, about 50 to 100 people are detained," he said during Op Kutip in Chow Kit today. In the latest operation, 72 undocumented migrants were arrested while asleep in a shop lot during a raid at 1.15am. Wan Mohammed Saupee said the migrants had been renting the premises together, paying between RM300 and RM500 each. Most of them were working nearby. Those arrested included 28 Indonesian men and 26 women, as well as two Myanmar men, 11 Bangladeshi men, two Indian men, one Nepali man, and two Pakistani men. Six Malaysians were also detained. They are believed to be working in the area as restaurant workers, cleaners, or doing odd jobs. Wan Mohammed Saupee said some had overstayed, with the longest case being up to two years. He added that the department will also track down the owner of the premises. He urged undocumented foreigners to take the opportunity to return home voluntarily through the Migrant Repatriation Programme (PRM) 2.0. He said this was the best way to avoid imprisonment. "The Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department urges all foreigners to take advantage of PRM 2.0, which runs until April 2026. "Don't wait to be arrested — legal action will be taken if you are caught. "Return legally through PRM by paying only RM500, plus RM20 for a special pass," he said.

Be wary of suspicious links received via WhatsApp, says Bukit Aman CCID director

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have opened 26 investigation papers into a scam syndicate that tricks victims into revealing their one-time password (OTP), resulting in losses totalling RM151,000 since January this year. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the victims claimed they had received a suspicious message and clicked on an embedded link. "Once the victims enter information related to the OTP, there is a risk their WhatsApp accounts might be taken over by the syndicate," he said when contacted on Friday (July 25). Comm Rusdi explained that the syndicate's modus operandi involves sending random messages with links to potential victims. "If the victim clicks on the link and follows the syndicate's instructions to provide certain details, the perpetrators might be able to take over the WhatsApp account," he added. He advised the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling for such tactics. "People should delete suspicious messages or links immediately and verify the source of any URL before clicking on it. Never provide personal details, and always change your password regularly," he said. Recently, suspicious links were being spread online regarding the RM100 additional cash aid for Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme. The link is a prompt for people to supposedly check their Sara status.

Senior immigration officer faces new money laundering charge involving RM718,710

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior officer from the Johor Immigration Department, already facing money laundering charges, has been slapped with an additional count involving RM718,710. Nas Suffian Nasrun, 41, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today. This latest charge follows his earlier indictment on July 22, where he faced five counts of money laundering involving RM933,295 in the Shah Alam Sessions Court. He denied all charges. The new case involves 64 online transactions between July 26, 2022, and June 9, 2023, where funds were allegedly transferred from an individual's bank account to a company's account at a Pandan Indah bank branch. The charge falls under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum 15-year jail term and a fine of at least five times the laundered amount or RM5 million, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Aznika Mohd Anas proposed bail at RM300,000 with one surety, along with conditions including passport surrender and monthly police reporting. She also requested the case be transferred to Shah Alam Sessions Court for joint trial with his other charges. Defence lawyer Muhammad Zaim Rosli argued for lower bail, citing Nas Suffian's clean disciplinary record, 19 years of civil service, and financial responsibilities supporting his wife and five children. Judge Rosli Ahmad set bail at RM100,000 with one surety, upheld the additional conditions, and approved the case transfer to Shah Alam. - Bernama
