Thousands of New Yorkers — including ‘Orange is the New Black' actor Matt McGorry — suffer from ‘Long COVID'
Tens of thousands of New Yorkers — including 'Orange is the New Black' actor Matt McGorry — suffer from 'long COVID' five years after the deadly once-in-a-century pandemic hit, shocking new data reveal. 'My actual daily survival is based on understanding and navigating [it],' said McGorry, a 39-year-old Manhattan native, who was part of a recent online city Department of Health series about the issue. A COVID and flu vaccination campaign conducted by the Health Department over the past year referred 21,805 residents to receive long-COVID-specific services during medical check-ups and outreach programs. Preliminary results from the study so far indicate that more than one in four of the adults has experienced long-term symptoms, meeting the definition for long COVID. Advertisement More than 80% of those with long COVID reported limitations in daily functioning, and more than 25% said they experienced employment changes because of related medical issues. An estimated 500,000 residents had lingering COVID-impacted illnesses that interfered with daily life in 2023, the department said. 'Together, these studies suggest that New Yorkers continue to experience the long-term effects of COVID-19, impacting not only health, but also work and daily life,' a Health Department spokesman said in a statement. 'Given the wide range and persistence of symptoms, the Health Department is continuing to analyze these data to better understand the burden of Long COVID and inform responsive public health strategies.' Long COVID also impacts blood vessels, raising the risk of heart ailments. Acting Health Department Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse said long COVID is a serious problem that warrants monitoring of patients, the way the medical community has tracked the medical conditions of residents exposed to toxic fumes and debris from 9/11. McGorry, 39, said long COVID severely impacted his career, which has included roles in the hit Netflix series 'Orange is the New Black' and the TV series 'How to Get Away With Murder.' 'Essentially I have been locked out of my industry, and that has had big financial impacts,' McGorry told Morse. 'No one should have to choose between a paycheck and their life and safety. … I really want to raise as much awareness as possible.' Netflix fans fume after outrageous murder-mystery is axed
Netflix viewers are in mourning after the streamer cancelled one of its 'best shows', The Residence, in a shock move. The eight-episode murder-mystery series starred Orange is the New Black actor Uzo Aduba as Detective Cordelia Cupp who must get to the bottom of a murder at the White House. After coming out in March, fans have had nothing but praise for the quirky show with an eccentric cast of characters, including pop icon Kylie Minogue herself as well as Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, Always Be My Maybe's Randall Park. In fact, people were rooting for multiple seasons of the show with our bird-obsessed detective solving a new mystery every time, Knives Out style anthology series. With an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score and a tidy 6.4 million views in the first four days alone – there's no denying there was appetite for more. Unfortunately, the Shonda Rhimes show won't be making a grand return to screens with Netflix axing it. The show was undeniably an expensive endeavour for the streamer featuring the biggest ever recreation of the White House built on seven stages and featured 10 miles of moulding, 200 working doors and 144,000 pounds of flooring. Per Deadline, sources say that there had been discussion to reduce the budget for a second season, which ultimately didn't work out. Over on Reddit, fans were complaining about the decision. 'That's a bummer! I really enjoyed her character. I liked the backstory flashbacks a lot too. I thought there was a lot to work with in further building her character,' user runamokamok said. 'I liked this show a lot more than I would've thought. Sucks its been canceled but at least we had a complete series with an ending,' SilverRoseBlade wrote. 'Why does Netflix only cancel quality shows like this?? That was genuinely so fun and thrilling,' kjsah9026 shared. 'This is on brand for Netflix. Cancelling shows that are actually good and renewing shows that suck,' explanationhead3753 reflected. 'Awww man. This was such a lovely, cozy show. I really wanted more,' vmetdear posted. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video HollasforDollas asked Netflix to 'get their priorities in order' while eightyfish called it a 'pity' and shidog agreed 'Netflix missed it on this one'. On X, the sentiment was similar. 'The Residence is one of the best shows I've ever watched and did what it needed to do that one season. I don't think they could have topped this going forward, anyway. I'm not mad,' blurrypinks declared. 'I'm so salty about The Residence getting cancelled,' ingirksnob agreed. 'Shondaland better find a way to save The Residence I need the murder mysteryaissance to continue!!!' Pomgrenatecity echoed. One minuscule consolation is that at least the plot of season one is contained with a satisfying resolution, which means fans won't have to deal with a devastating cliffhanger that never gets answered. Alongside The Residence, another fresh show on the platform, Pulse, about a group of ER doctors navigating crisis after crisis at a Miami hospital, has also been cut. Meanwhile, Netflix thriller No Good Deed, which came out in December starring Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano, has been paused indefinitely. Netflix has a track record for prematurely cancelling TV shows and evoking uproar among fans. In 2023, co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Bloomberg the metric by which they measure whether a show gets that all-important greenlight. 'We have never cancelled a successful show. A lot of these shows were well-intended but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget. More Trending 'The key to it is you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience at a large budget. If you do that well, you can do that forever,' he said. This year alone has seen the unceremonious end of Noah Centineo's The Recruit, period drama The Empress and Greek mythology series Kaos. This is alongside a slew of major shows coming to an end, including Squid Game, The Sandman, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Big Mouth, Cobra Kai and Outer Banks. Orange Is The New Black star looks unrecognisable in new role
Orange is the New Black star Julie Lake is set to premiere her new musical play Forget-Me-Not at the Edinburgh Fringe this August, alongside writer-performer Annie Macleod Fans of Orange is the New Black will be astounded to see Julie Lake, who played Angie Rice in the series, in her latest role. Forget-Me-Not, a new musical play set to premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe this August, was co-created by Lake and writer-performer Annie Macleod. Lake, a two-time Screen Actors Guild Award winner for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, has embarked on her first original theatre collaboration with Macleod. The play draws inspiration from Lake's real-life friendship with Macleod, exploring how they had to rekindle their relationship following a significant disagreement. Described as "raw, funny and deeply relatable", Forget-Me-Not delves into themes of "motherhood, creativity, and the quiet, stubborn resilience of female friendship", reports the Mirror US. The narrative follows two childhood friends who reconnect in adulthood; while one navigates the demands of motherhood, the other is rediscovering herself after leaving a marriage. The synopsis reads: "When a moment of conflict shatters their connection, the silence that follows is shattering in its own right. "As the show unfolds, their tentative reconnection becomes a portrait of friendship not frozen in time, but reshaped by it – imperfect, evolving, and profoundly human." Forget-Me-Not will make its debut at the Edinburgh Festival this August, with performances scheduled from August 1 to 9. The star of Orange is the New Black has taken to Instagram to promote her latest endeavour, receiving a wave of support from her followers. Upon revealing the show's poster, an admirer exclaimed: "Gorgeous poster! Go go go! ! xoxo". She also posted a clip from a music rehearsal for her upcoming play, eliciting reactions such as: "This is wonderful!" and "Beautiful harmonies!". The new venture for the California-born actress arrives more than ten years following her stint in Orange Is the New Black. The show premieres at the Edinburgh Festival this August.
