Netflix fans fume after outrageous murder-mystery is axed

Metro5 days ago
Netflix viewers are in mourning after the streamer cancelled one of its 'best shows', The Residence, in a shock move.
The eight-episode murder-mystery series starred Orange is the New Black actor Uzo Aduba as Detective Cordelia Cupp who must get to the bottom of a murder at the White House.
After coming out in March, fans have had nothing but praise for the quirky show with an eccentric cast of characters, including pop icon Kylie Minogue herself as well as Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, Always Be My Maybe's Randall Park.
In fact, people were rooting for multiple seasons of the show with our bird-obsessed detective solving a new mystery every time, Knives Out style anthology series.
With an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score and a tidy 6.4 million views in the first four days alone – there's no denying there was appetite for more.

Unfortunately, the Shonda Rhimes show won't be making a grand return to screens with Netflix axing it.
The show was undeniably an expensive endeavour for the streamer featuring the biggest ever recreation of the White House built on seven stages and featured 10 miles of moulding, 200 working doors and 144,000 pounds of flooring.
Per Deadline, sources say that there had been discussion to reduce the budget for a second season, which ultimately didn't work out.
Over on Reddit, fans were complaining about the decision.
'That's a bummer! I really enjoyed her character. I liked the backstory flashbacks a lot too. I thought there was a lot to work with in further building her character,' user runamokamok said.
'I liked this show a lot more than I would've thought. Sucks its been canceled but at least we had a complete series with an ending,' SilverRoseBlade wrote.
'Why does Netflix only cancel quality shows like this?? That was genuinely so fun and thrilling,' kjsah9026 shared.
'This is on brand for Netflix. Cancelling shows that are actually good and renewing shows that suck,' explanationhead3753 reflected.
'Awww man. This was such a lovely, cozy show. I really wanted more,' vmetdear posted.

HollasforDollas asked Netflix to 'get their priorities in order' while eightyfish called it a 'pity' and shidog agreed 'Netflix missed it on this one'.
On X, the sentiment was similar.
'The Residence is one of the best shows I've ever watched and did what it needed to do that one season. I don't think they could have topped this going forward, anyway. I'm not mad,' blurrypinks declared.
'I'm so salty about The Residence getting cancelled,' ingirksnob agreed.
'Shondaland better find a way to save The Residence I need the murder mysteryaissance to continue!!!' Pomgrenatecity echoed.
One minuscule consolation is that at least the plot of season one is contained with a satisfying resolution, which means fans won't have to deal with a devastating cliffhanger that never gets answered.
Alongside The Residence, another fresh show on the platform, Pulse, about a group of ER doctors navigating crisis after crisis at a Miami hospital, has also been cut.
Meanwhile, Netflix thriller No Good Deed, which came out in December starring Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano, has been paused indefinitely.
Netflix has a track record for prematurely cancelling TV shows and evoking uproar among fans.
In 2023, co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Bloomberg the metric by which they measure whether a show gets that all-important greenlight.
'We have never cancelled a successful show. A lot of these shows were well-intended but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget. More Trending
'The key to it is you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience at a large budget. If you do that well, you can do that forever,' he said.
This year alone has seen the unceremonious end of Noah Centineo's The Recruit, period drama The Empress and Greek mythology series Kaos.
This is alongside a slew of major shows coming to an end, including Squid Game, The Sandman, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Big Mouth, Cobra Kai and Outer Banks.

Emmerdale confirms huge Charity story as Cain is left in shock

Desperate to help granddaughter Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), Emmerdale's Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is about to make a very impulsive and life-changing offer. Shortly after her cancer diagnosis, Sarah underwent an operation that left her devastated. There was a complication in surgery and as a result, she had to have a hysterectomy. Due to this, Sarah can no longer carry a child. The development was so badly timed as just a few days prior, she was getting excited with friend Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) about her IVF process, and how it finally felt like becoming a mum was a dream within reaching distance. Unable to grow a small human of her own, Sarah broke down to Cain recently. He felt terrible over the fact Sarah is only in this position because of an illness she has no control over, and became determined to help. This was when Cain suggested surrogacy. It's certainly not the same as giving birth to your own baby – but it's one of the few options Sarah has left. In upcoming episodes, Charity approaches Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) and asks her to be Sarah's surrogate. She is overwhelmed by the request, and Charity later senses that she isn't all too keen on the idea. As Victoria chats to Robert (Ryan Hawley), Moira (Natalie J Robb) can't help but wonder if Cain is pushing aside his grief for Nate by focusing on Sarah's surrogacy. More Trending After learning about Charity's chat with Vic, Sarah is furious that her Gran went behind her back. With Cain's efforts to find a surrogacy turning out to be a scam, Sarah resigns herself to the fact she will never be a mum. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Emmerdale killer John ‘set to confess' as Nate's funeral erupts into chaos

It's Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) funeral next week in Emmerdale, though the event is anything but an opportunity to peacefully and calmly reflect on the resident's life. Nate was killed by John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) last year, but his body in the lake was only discovered fairly recently. With John doing a good job at covering his tracks, the police are still struggling to work out how Nate died, as well as who was responsible. With the funeral approaching, John spends the days prior filled with dread and to make things even worse, he can't even persuade Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) not to attend. At the surgery, John takes a look at his list and discovers his next appointment is with Owen, the person who spiked Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley). Owen recognises John, and is then thrown out of the surgery. A potential threat quashed once more, John turns his focus back to the funeral, as he's asked by Aaron to try and get Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh) to change her mind about the Dingles attending. Sadly, she doesn't budge on her decision. More Trending Later, as the memorial begins in the pub, Cain channels his grief into anger. Just as Caleb Miligan (William Ash) has got his brother to calm down, Nate's mum walks in and is furious to see Cain looking so jovial. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? When the day of Nate's funeral arrives, the Dingles arrive en-masse behind the hearse. The event quickly descends into chaos and a major argument escalates between multiple characters. Listening in and struggling is John. Unable to stand it any longer, he makes an emotional appeal for a truce, but ends up getting roped into doing the eulogy instead of Tracy. With DS Walsh watching, John starts the eulogy but as he feels more and more under pressure, it looks as though he may confess… View More » MORE: Emmerdale confirms huge Charity story as Cain is left in shock – and sadness will follow MORE: EastEnders legend 'warned' about real-life Emmerdale star partner MORE: Robert issues a dark threat in Emmerdale as he finally gets the upper hand

Emmerdale star confirms 'upsetting and alarming' new storyline for Bear

There's been something bothering Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) on Emmerdale for quite a while now. The usually gruff but generally genial former wrestling pro has been completely out of sorts – being horrible to Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), prone to explosive anger outbursts and seeming to be very down. 'There's an element of confusion in Bear's thinking,' Joshua Richards confirmed, explaining that his character is suddenly feeling his age. 'I think he's lashing out because he feels vulnerable and a bit afraid,' he said. 'He's a man who, in the past, has been incredibly physically strong and has earned his living from being fit and healthy. And he can fight. He still has that capability. But as you get older you question your viability to be the kind of person you were before, and therefore you become a vulnerable individual. 'There's no status any more, and I think status for somebody who was an athlete and someone who had a great deal of respect for his prowess in the ring suddenly has nothing. It's called dignity. If you have no dignity you can start lashing out because you do feel vulnerable and you're open to attack.' Paddy and Mandy (Lisa Riley) have been left mystified by Bear's behaviour and their attempts to help him have been thrown back at them. The rift between father and son has been devastating, with bitter words being exchanged from both sides. In the wake of all this, Bear has left the village temporarily. When he returns, he'll be launched into a big new storyline, and Joshua is looking forward to the challenge. 'I'm going to enjoy my summer holiday because I'm off to Wales tomorrow,' he said, 'But I'm really looking forward to coming back. I do love to work. I'm not mad on inactivity for long periods of time, as any actor is if one could be there doing something and having the great fun of taking on a major storyline. It's exciting.' Although the subject matter of the storyline is being kept under wraps, Joshua hinted that it will tackle 'quite a major subject.' More Trending He went on to say, 'I've done something on this subject which I'm not going to say, but I did a play about it with John Godber a few years ago and it was riveting – quite profound and upsetting and also full of alarming facts.' In 2007, Joshua acted in John Godber and Jane Thornton's play Sold, playing a journalist who tries to help a woman who has been sold to people traffickers. This would certainly be a difficult and powerful topic for Emmerdale to tackle if this is what's planned. Joshua wasn't giving any more details but told us that he's excited about taking on the upcoming storyline.
