Concept Mitsubishi DST morphs into 7-seat Destinator
Its public unveiling happening at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show that starts in the nation's capital, Jakarta, tomorrow, Mitsubishi has removed wraps from the DST Concept as the production Destinator bound for ASEAN markets. 'Stretched' Outlander Sport Devised as a three-row version of the Xforce, known in South Africa as the Outlander Sport, the Destinator has already been ruled-out as the replacement for the Pajero Sport, but serves as step-down from it as well as the 'normal' Outlander to become the brand's most accessible seven-seat SUV. Similar to the Xforce/Outlander Sport in that it rides on the same unibody platform, the Destinator appears little changed from the DST that premiered at the Philippine International Motor Show last October, as it only omits the flush door handles and replaces the side-mounted cameras with traditional mirrors. Along with a different grille and the same L-shaped LED headlight clusters as the Xforce/Outlander Sport, Mitsubishi has made similar subtle changes to the rear by fitting a new bumper, but retaining the same light clusters and wraparound window. Down the side, the slats on the C-pillar have also been kept, as has the wheel arch cladding and black door sills. However, the fuel filler cap moves to the left in response to the steering gear shifting to the right. Dimensions Mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels, the Destinator's dimensions amount to an overall length of 4 680mm, height of 1 780mm, width of 1 840mm and wheelbase of 2 815mm. Compared to the Xforce/Outlander Sport, these represent gains of 290mm, 120mm, 30mm and 165mm respectively. At the same time, ground clearance has increased from 193mm to 214mm. All changed inside Set to be produced alongside its sibling at the Bekasi plant outside Jakarta, the Destinator's biggest difference from the DST Concept resides inside where the interior has been redesigned to mirror that of the Xforce/Outlander Sport. As such, the dual displays have been dropped for a 12.3-inch infotainment display and an eight-inch instrument cluster recessed into the dashboard rather than freestanding, the futuristic steering wheel for a conventional one, and the various touchpads on the doors for the normal physical switchgear. Also gone is the minimalist dashboard replaced by a more traditional layout with physical buttons, while the floating centre console has been 'normalised' with a flat upper surface, conventional buttons and a gear lever. While no details surrounding boot space was made official, Mitsubishi did confirm a 40/20/40 split arrangement for the second row, and select specification items such as ambient lighting, type-A and type-C USB ports, a panoramic sunroof and an eight-speaker sound system co-developed with Yamaha. Notable safety and driver assistance systems comprise Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto High Beam Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lead Vehicle Departure Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, Forward Collision Mitigation, six airbags and a surround-view camera system. As with the Xforce/Outlander Sport, the Destinator gets Mitsubishi's rally-derived Active Yaw Control system and a drive mode selector with five settings; Normal, Wet, Tarmac, Gravel and Mud. Blown four-cylinder Taking care of motivation, the Destinator retains the venerable 1.5l petrol engine, but with the inclusion of a turbocharger that sees power rise from 77kW/141Nm in the Xforce/Outlander Sport, to 120kW/250Nm. Despite its chunkier proportions, the Destinator remains front-wheel-drive and with the sole transmission option of a CVT. By comparison, the incoming next generation Pajero Sport will keep its ladder-frame design and receive propulsion from the same 4N16 2.4l turbodiesel engine as the model it will be based on, the new Triton bakkie. Not for us, yet Confirmed not only for Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, but also key other markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa, the Destinator, for the moment, hasn't been approved for South Africa. Should approval be given, expect it to only arrive next year positioned between the Outlander Sport and the normal Outlander. This article first appeared in The Citizen. Concept Mitsubishi DST morphs into seven-seat Destinator
Unibody, enlarged sibling of the Xforce/Outlander Sport won't, however, replace the incoming all-new generation bakkie-based Pajero Sport. Its official public unveiling happening at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show that kicks-off in Indonesian capital Jakarta on Wednesday (23 July), Mitsubishi has removed wraps from the DST Concept as the production Destinator bound for ASEAN markets. Devised as a three-row version of the Xforce, known in South Africa as the Outlander Sport, the Destinator has already been ruled-out as the replacement for the Pajero Sport, but rather a step-down as the brand's most accessible seven-seat SUV. Along with a different grille and the same L-shaped LED headlight clusters as the Xforce/Outlander Sport, Mitsubishi has made similarly subtle changes at the rear by fitting a new bumper, but retaining the same light clusters and wraparound window. Down the side, the slates on the C-pillar have also been kept, as has the wheel arch cladding and black extended door sills. Compared to the DST though, the fuel filler cap moves to the left in response to the steering gear shifting to the right. Mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels, the Destinator's dimensions amount to an overall length of 4 680 mm, height of 1 780 mm, width of 1 840 mm and wheelbase of 2 815 mm. As such, the dual displays have been dropped from a 12.3-inch infotainment display and an eight-inch instrument cluster recessed into the dashboard rather than freestanding, the futuristic steering wheels for a conventional one, and the various touchpads on the doors for the normal physical buttons. Also gone is the minimalist dashboard replaced by a more traditional layout for physical switches, while the floating centre console has also been 'normalised' with a flat upper surface, proper buttons and a conventional gear lever. Mitsubishi Updates Entire Lineup For 2026, Gives Outlander PHEV More Range

View post: Amazon is selling a 'powerful' $100 cordless impact wrench for only $50, and shoppers say it's 'a beast' Multiple Changes Come To The Mitsubishi Range For 2026 We're halfway through 2025, and that means it's time for automakers to start prepping their 2026 updates, be those introductions of all-new models or revisions of existing recipes. For Mitsubishi, nothing major is happening right now, but its entire offering is being refreshed for 2026 at once – Outlander, Outlander Sport, Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, and Eclipse Cross – with varying degrees of improvement. Let's dive in to see what buyers can expect. 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Gets A New Engine, Sport Stays Simple Borrowed from the Eclipse Cross, the regular Outlander now features a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, replacing the 2.5-liter four-pot that previously motivated the midsize crossover with 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Mitsubishi has not yet revealed the updated figures, but we assume that the thermal motor will make the same 152 hp and 184 lb-ft as it does in its donor vehicle, and the rest will come from electrification. No changes have been made to the way the Outlander looks for 2026 because the styling was updated for the 2025 model year, but a new LE trim will fill any gaps between the base ES and the mid-range SE. More importantly, the Ralliart trim will return. This won't be the hardcore SUV Mitsubishi has been considering of late. The Outlander Sport, Mitsubishi's most affordable offering, carries over unchanged, but Mitsubishi points to the findings of industry research group Ipsos, which say that 97% of shoppers considering an Outlander Sport ended up following through on a purchase (if it ain't broke, and all that). Trail Editions of both the Outlander and Outlander Sport will continue to be offered. Outlander PHEV Embraces New Looks For 2026 The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid trim has been given a mid-cycle refresh, finally adopting the styling of the regular Outlander. New materials and colors will be offered, and Mitsubishi highlights improvements in sound deadening, new 20-inch wheels, a redesigned center console with more storage, a Yamaha sound system, and heated and cooled front seats. A 12.3-inch infotainment display is also available, but it's the parts one can't see that have made the biggest difference. Mitsubishi has retuned the dampers, springs, stabilizer bars, and bushings to provide 'a more confident and assured driving feel,' while a larger-capacity battery will increase the PHEV's all-electric driving range, currently claimed at just 38 miles. 2026 Eclipse Cross Gets Even Simpler Minor changes have been made to the Eclipse Cross compact crossover. Embedded navigation has been deleted (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, so this is no major loss), while 'Eclipse Cross' badging has been added to the SEL and SEL Touring models as standard. Mitsubishi says it will reveal technical details, pricing, and more information on each of these crossovers later in the year. The regular Outlander will be at dealers in the last quarter of the year, while the PHEV will debut in the first quarter of 2026. Mitsubishi hasn't said when to expect the Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross, and as of this writing, its customer-facing U.S. site still shows only 2025 models. We'll report back once we know more. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today announced updates to its 2026 model year lineup, highlighted by a significantly updated 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid and an all-new mild-hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain in the Outlander. With these significant updates to the Outlander family, Mitsubishi Motors continues to deliver on the promises made in its five-year North American business plan, Momentum 2030, which will see a new or significantly revised vehicle launched in the U.S. each year from 2026 to 2030. Pricing and full technical and specification details on all models will be announced closer to each vehicle's launch. 2026 OUTLANDER PLUG-IN HYBRIDNew for 2026 is a mid-cycle refresh that debuted on the non-plug-in hybrid model for 2025, led by a redesigned interior with significant attention paid to sound-deadening, as well as new materials, new colors, heated and cooled front seats, a redesigned center console with larger-capacity armrest storage, new cupholders and a redesigned phone charger. Also standard on the updated vehicle is a U.S.-industry-exclusive Yamaha® audio system1 and available 12.3" infotainment display screen. On the outside, a revised grille area, redesigned front bumper and new 20" wheels draw attention, as do smoked rear taillights. Mechanically, the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid features a larger-capacity drive battery. This will increase all-electric range, decrease the amount of time the internal combustion engine runs and lead to improved on-road acceleration performance. Under the skin, steering and ride quality are revised through extensive tuning of dampers, springs, stabilizer bars and bushings, all of which combine to produce a more confident and assured driving feel. As the world's first plug-in hybrid electric SUV, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid continues to offer customers more value, more technology and more satisfaction year over year. Featuring an award-winning mix of confident, quiet, eco-friendly motoring, every 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid sports powerful front and rear motors to deliver Mitsubishi Motors' motorsport-inspired Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) twin-motor all-wheel-drive system1. More information and pricing will be provided late this year; the vehicle will debut in Q1 2026. 2026 OUTLANDERFor 2026, Outlander is equipped with a new Mitsubishi Motors-designed and developed engine, the basis of which is shared with Eclipse Cross. A 1.5-liter turbocharged, 16-valve, four-cylinder gasoline unit, this engine will be combined with the company's first mild-hybrid system. Replacing the 2.5-liter engine in the current Outlander, the new powertrain will deliver increased confidence and drivability thanks to electrified torque aiding off-the-line acceleration. 2026 also will see the introduction of a new LE trim, slotted between the entry-level ES and mid-grade SE, as well as a top-line SEL Black Edition and the return of the popular Ralliart model. Building on the overwhelming success of Outlander since the launch of this new-generation model in 2022, the 2025 Outlander debuted with a mid-cycle refresh to interior and exterior styling and customer touch-points, as well as revised road manners. Cosmetically, it carries over into the 2026 model-year unchanged. Pricing and more information about the 2026 Outlander will be released later this year; the vehicle will be available in Q4 2025 2026 ECLIPSE CROSSChanges to the 2026 model are minimal, with the deletion of the embedded navigation and the inclusion as standard on SEL and SEL Touring models of the popular "Eclipse Cross" hood badging (previously a port- or dealer-installed option). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration continues to be standard equipment on all Eclipse Cross models, regardless of trim level. The 2026 Eclipse Cross retains its predecessor's chiseled front and rear design enhancements, with the successful and popular compact crossover utility vehicle otherwise carrying over for the 2026 model year unchanged. All 2026 Eclipse Crosses sport Mitsubishi Motors' signature motorsport-derived S-AWC all-wheel drive system as standard equipment, which helps in various weather conditions and types of road surfaces2. 2026 OUTLANDER SPORTOne of Mitsubishi Motors' best-known nameplates, the 2026 Outlander Sport heads into the new year as a carry-over model from 2025. The brand's least expensive vehicle, Outlander Sport offers quality, an industry-leading warranty and the outstanding value that customers expect from Mitsubishi Motors. Standard on every 2026 Outlander Sport is Mitsubishi's All-Wheel Control (AWC) all-wheel-drive system3, powering adventures and off-highway exploration. Family features like rear-seat warning, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and easy-to-access LATCH child-seat anchors make the Outlander Sport a smart purchase for everyone. According to industry research group Ipsos, 97% of small CUV owners who shopped for a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport purchased one4. TRAIL EDITIONSDedicated Trail Edition trims of Outlander and Outlander Sport will be available for the 2026 model year. Trail Edition debuted on Outlander in 2025 and on Outlander Sport in 2024. Featuring model-specific graphic and trim packages, dedicated wheels, dealer-available off-highway-focused tires and accessory kits and Thule roof-racks and mounts, these Trail Editions build on Mitsubishi Motors' history of motorsport victories in the Dakar Rally and the World Rally Championship. Buying a Mitsubishi? Prices Just Jumped
According to a new report by Reuters, Mitsubishi is the latest to join a growing list of automakers that are passing on the economic burden of tariffs and their effects on the supply chain directly onto the buyers of Outlanders, Outlander Sports, and its other vehicles. The newswire reports that as of June 18, prices for Mitsubishi vehicles sold in the U.S. will increase by an average of 2.1%, a move that the automaker itself claims is due to a combination of market factors and ongoing internal pricing evaluations. In its statement, Mitsubishi said the pricing adjustment was "a direct result of our regular and ongoing review of pricing to ensure we are aligned with segment expectations." However, they also emphasized that the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration were a significant factor, as increased import levies are making the cost of importing vehicles into the U.S. more expensive, leaving automakers with few options other than to raise sticker prices. However, Mitsubishi reassured consumers and concerned dealers that the price increase would not affect vehicles already on showroom floors or on dealer lots. It clarified that the price bump will apply to new cars shipped to dealers following June 18. Mitsubishi's price increase comes on the heels of a temporary pause in deliveries triggered by Trump's tariff policy. In April, a Mitsubishi spokesperson said that the automaker was holding its vehicles at the port before any levies could be applied, as it awaited more color and clarity on the tariff situation. "We are holding vehicles at the port until we have additional visibility on tariffs and decisions made on next steps," the spokesperson told AutoNews on April 11. "We have sufficient stock on the ground at dealers for the moment to not impact customer choice." Compared to its Japanese automotive compatriots like Honda, Toyota, Subaru, and Nissan, Mitsubishi is in a precarious position. While its contemporaries produce U.S.-market cars in several states in the Midwest and American South, Mitsubishi imports every single Outlander, Mirage, Outlander Sport crossover, and Eclipse Cross it sells in the United States from Japan, prime candidates for 25% tariffs when they land at the port. Despite the tariff stress, Mitsubishi seems to be doing well in the United States. In Q1 2025, year-over-year sales increased by 11%. Last year, the company sold 110,000 vehicles, a 26% year-over-year increase and the best U.S. sales year for Mitsubishi since 2019. Mitsubishi credits this growth to its refreshed product lineup and the strong performance of the Outlander and Outlander Sport models in a competitive compact SUV market. However, the auto industry is showing coping mechanisms as tariffs reshape the cost of business. Last month, Subaru of America raised prices on multiple models by up to $2,055, citing "current market conditions." Weeks earlier, Ford became one of the first major automakers to respond to the new tariffs directly, increasing prices on three Mexican-made models by as much as $2,000. Additionally, Volvo's new order guide for 2026 shows several price increases, with some as high as $3,200. It seems that the tariff fiasco will not go away very soon. Last week, President Trump warned that he may raise the 25% auto tariffs, arguing that it could be an incentive for automakers to accelerate U.S. investments. "I might go up with that tariff in the not-too-distant future," Trump said on June 12. "The higher you go, the more likely it is they build a plant here." The tariff troubles are showing results in economic activity. According to Nikkei Asia, new data shows that Japan's total exports by value to the U.S. fell by 11% year-over-year, and the number of cars exported from Japan to the U.S. fell by 3.9%. To make matters worse, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Trump were unable to strike a tariff deal at a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit this week, as they couldn't agree on tariffs on Japanese automobiles, something the U.S. considers to be a main cause of its trade deficit with Japan.
