GRS confident of reclaiming Lamag seat

Masiung giving his address. SANDAKAN (July 11): Local parties under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition are gearing up to challenge Umno/Barisan Nasional (BN) in Lamag ahead of the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN-17). Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah expressed confidence that GRS, led by Gagasan Rakyat, is well-positioned to win back the Lamag state seat from the opposition. 'I see the political momentum in Sabah, particularly in Lamag, clearly favouring local parties,' he said during the official launch of the new Gagasan Rakyat Lamag office, headed by division chief Abu Bakar Gapar, in Bukit Garam yesterday. Masiung, who is also the Kuamut assemblyman, highlighted Gagasan Rakyat's strong presence and commitment in Lamag, describing it as the backbone of the GRS coalition. He said GRS is committed to fielding the best possible candidate to secure victory in the upcoming polls. 'The three key party wings — Pemuda (Youth), Wanita (Women) and Beliawanis (Young Women) — have already begun mobilising throughout the constituency,' he said, adding that the GRS party wings are now fully aligned with their respective District Polling Centre (PDM) networks. Masiung also urged the party wings in Lamag to remain diligent and responsive to leadership directives. He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation among Gagasan Rakyat's election machinery and coalition partners within GRS to win over the support of voters in the constituency. Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin is the incumbent Lamag assemblyman.

Sabah polls: Joint election machinery between GRS and Sabah Pakatan likely

KOTA KINABALU: The likelihood of a joint election machinery between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah Pakatan Harapan is becoming increasingly clear, with repeated signals of intent from Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice-president Datuk Masiung Banah said the cooperation between the two political blocs appears to be heading in a positive direction as both sides have demonstrated mutual respect and support. "The confidence is there. The Chief Minister has, on several occasions, expressed his openness and desire to work together with Pakatan Harapan," he said after officiating the Gagasan Rakyat Inanam Annual Conference at the Menggatal Community Hall on Tuesday (June 17). Banah noted that Sabah Pakatan had also shown support for Hajiji's leadership and administration, signalling strong groundwork for a potential collaboration in the upcoming 17th state election (PRN-17). He said the matter of forming a formal joint election operation between GRS and Pakatan would be discussed and decided at the GRS Supreme Council meeting in the near future. "If this cooperation is finalised, we will set up a joint election machinery in every district to ensure that GRS candidates have the full backing needed to win in PRN-17," he said. Banah also confirmed that GRS currently shares a common view with Barisan Nasional, to not pursue any electoral cooperation for the state polls. He expressed optimism that the existing working relationship between GRS and Sabah Pakatan within the state Cabinet had laid a solid foundation for political stability in Sabah, which should continue through the election. He also commended Hajiji's leadership, describing him as a unifying force at the forefront of Sabah politics. "His leadership is the shield that protects political harmony and progress in the state. We believe the people trust him, and his ideas will be the rallying point for GRS consensus candidates to secure victory," Banah added. The Gagasan Rakyat Inanam division is led by Datuk Dr Roland Chia, who was also present at the conference.

Cooperate and develop Sabah without overlooking local rights

Published on: Saturday, May 24, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025 By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: Mohammad Bahrin when met by reporters. KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Mohammad Bahrin Abd Karim, Chief of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Likas, emphasized the need for all parties to be open-minded and collaborate with national parties to develop Sabah without sidelining the rights of Sabahans. He supports forming consensus within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), although no final decision has been made yet. A proposal for GRS to contest solo in the upcoming state election (PRN-17) was based on grassroots feedback from social media. Gagasan Rakyat Likas has 22 branches with 2,500 members, focusing on recruiting quality members who can contribute actively. Voter demographics in Likas show a majority of Chinese voters, making cooperation with government parties logical. Bahrin also predicts a rise in independent candidates in PRN-17, with hardworking individuals likely to gain more support than party-affiliated candidates. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. Sabah Umno must return to the people, avoid past mistakes, says Bung Moktar

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno must re-energise by reconnecting with the people and learning from its past. The party must also embrace the youth and digital transformation to remain relevant in today's political landscape. Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said this, quoting party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahir Hamidi, in conjunction with the party's 79th anniversary on Sunday (May 11). 'Our strength lies not in political rhetoric, but in our proven track record. In Sabah, Umno has been instrumental in establishing the state's first local university, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and building schools, clinics, roads, and creating job and business opportunities across the state,' he said. Bung Moktar stated that Zahid, in his anniversary speech, emphasised three key directions to guide Sabah Umno as it prepares for the upcoming 17th state election (PRN-17). 'First, Umno must return to the people. We can no longer rely on promises alone. Our leaders must go to the ground, listen to the people's grievances, and provide real solutions. Popularity is meaningless without sincerity and hard work. 'Second, we must not repeat past mistakes. Our defeats did not stem from the opposition's strength but our own internal weaknesses. In Sabah, unity is crucial. Differences in opinion should never lead to division. Our battle is with political opponents, not among ourselves. 'Third, Umno must be a party of the future, not one stuck in nostalgia. In this digital era, we must innovate and empower the younger generation in Sabah; they are the torchbearers of our struggle,' he said. He added that Zahid's message was not just a reflection on the party's past contributions, but a rallying cry for Sabah Umno to rise again amid the country's evolving political climate. Bung Moktar called on all leaders, party machinery and members across the state to rise, unite, and fight, making PRN-17 a platform for Sabah Umno's resurgence. 'We will not allow those who never served to reap what they did not sow. We have a legacy to honour, and a future to shape,' he said.
