KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Mohammad Bahrin Abd Karim, Chief of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Likas, emphasized the need for all parties to be open-minded and collaborate with national parties to develop Sabah without sidelining the rights of Sabahans. He supports forming consensus within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), although no final decision has been made yet. A proposal for GRS to contest solo in the upcoming state election (PRN-17) was based on grassroots feedback from social media. Gagasan Rakyat Likas has 22 branches with 2,500 members, focusing on recruiting quality members who can contribute actively. Voter demographics in Likas show a majority of Chinese voters, making cooperation with government parties logical. Bahrin also predicts a rise in independent candidates in PRN-17, with hardworking individuals likely to gain more support than party-affiliated candidates. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss.

Muhyiddin denies betraying Borneo bloc, slams Hajiji's remarks

FORMER prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has denied claims by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor that he did not support the Borneo bloc. Muhyiddin called the accusation baseless and false, stressing that he has long supported Sabah's development and was consistently present in the state. 'Recently, there was a statement made. Why did he (Hajiji) betray us, claiming that I don't support the Borneo bloc? 'When did I ever say I didn't support the Borneo bloc? I don't even know who that bloc is, because from the very beginning I've been present here in Sabah,' he said during his speech at the Perikatan Nasional People's Tour event here on Friday (Aug 1) night. He defended his commitment to Sabah, recalling his involvement since UMNO's early days there. Muhyiddin said the claim reflects political betrayal and urged Sabahans to rebuild their strength and dignity. 'If I were to talk about the past, when UMNO first entered Sabah, from that time until today I've remained in Sabah because I believe Sabah has unique strengths, its natural wealth can be used to develop the state and turn Sabah into a successful and progressive state. 'When did I ever say I didn't support Sabah or the Borneo bloc? That's a lie,' he stressed. He also reaffirmed Perikatan Nasional's aim to reclaim both Sabah and the Federal Government from the current Pakatan Harapan-led administration. During the recent Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah general assembly, Hajiji claimed that certain leaders from the previous federal government did not support the Borneo bloc. He cited this as one of the reasons for backing the formation of the unity government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Hajiji did not name anyone specifically but hinted it was a senior figure from the former administration. — Aug 2, 2025 Main photo credit: Bernama

Muhyiddin: PN exploring alliances ahead of Sabah polls

TAWAU: Discussions on possible cooperation with other parties, including Warisan, ahead of the 17th Sabah state election are still ongoing, said Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Muhyiddin did not rule out the need to form a strong coalition to boost PN's chances of recapturing Sabah, adding that the PN logo would be used in the election as it had gained wide acceptance nationwide. "No decision has been made, but we are arranging strategies and holding discussions with many parties. There is no need to announce everything now… that is strategy, a secret," he said after attending the Jelajah Rakyat 2025 programme last night. Muhyiddin, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president, said PN was committed to addressing long-standing basic issues in Sabah such as clean water supply, electricity and road infrastructure if given the mandate to govern at both state and federal levels. "These are not new issues. Sabahans have been raising them for decades but solutions have yet to materialise. If we are given the mandate, PN will draw up a comprehensive plan to resolve these problems in stages. If not within a year, we will try to secure funds as soon as possible and prioritise marginalised areas." The former prime minister said the strong turnout at the event showed growing public disillusionment with the current government and rising confidence in PN as a credible alternative. "The support we saw tonight is very clear. With one voice, the people want PN to form the government at both federal and state levels," he said.
