Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys' High: Kick-off time CONFIRMED
Paarl will come to a standstill this weekend when Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys' High do battle to determine South Africa's No 1 rugby school in 2025. Both sides have had stellar seasons to date and stand head-and-shoulders above every other school in the country. But they haven't faced one another. Yet. That will all change on Saturday, 2 August at Faure Street Stadium in Paarl when, if reports are to be believed, somewhere between 20 000 and 25 000 spectators are expected. Old boys from both schools are said to be flying in from around the world to attend. Kick-off has been confirmed for 16:00 and the match will be screened live on SuperSport channel 216. Meanwhile, for those interested, the First XI hockey match between the two schools will take place on the Paarl Gimnasium Astro on Saturday, 2 August at 10:30. In terms of the number of Springboks produced by each school, Paarl Gimnasium lead 31-26. The last Paarl Gimnasium Springbok was John Grobbelaar (#939 – out of 952), while Paarl Boys' High's most recent green and gold old boy was Cameron Hanekom (#945). Both schools boast a who's-who of Springbok old boys from Jan Pickard, Jean de Villiers, Schalk Burger (senior and junior), Kobus Wiese and Handre Pollard (all Paarl Gimnasium) to Boy Louw, Ryk van Schoor, Mannetjies Roux, Carel du Plessis, Corne Krige, Frans Malherbe and Thomas du Toit (all Paarl Boys' High). Hoërskool De Aar has its first ever Springbok old boy
Loosehead prop Boan Venter made his Springbok debut on Saturday against Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela. Venter, 28, became Springbok #950 and scored a try in South Africa's 55-10 win. Born in Kimberley, Venter also became Hoërskool De Aar's first ever Springbok player. Hoërskool De Aar was founded 101 years ago in 1924. Meanwhile, Venter joined Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche in making their Springbok debuts against Georgia. Van der Merwe became Springbok #951 and Fouche is Springbok #952. The Test against Georgia had extra significance for Marnus van der Merwe who was born in Mbombela and attended Hoërskool Nelspruit. He became Hoërskool Nelspruit's sixth Springbok after Nico Wegner, Schutte Bekker, Duane Vermeulen, Marnitz Boshoff and team-mate on Saturday, Faf de Klerk, although De Klerk didn't matriculate from the school, but rather moved to Waterkloof. Finally, Neethling Fouche's selection gave Grey College their 49th Springbok of all time as they closed the gap on Paul Roos who lead the way with 56 Springbok old boys. Paarl Gimnasium prodigy Markus Muller to captain SA Schools side
Markus Muller (SA Schools) and Jeandre Uithaler (SA Schools 'A') will captain their respective sides in the annual clash between the cream of the crop in South Africa's schoolboy rugby at Hoërskool Middelburg in Mpumalanga on Thursday. Muller, centre from Western Province and Paarl Gimnasium, will lead the team running out in green and gold, while the Uithaler, the Golden Lions and Noorheuwel's flyhalf, will run in front of the team in the alternative white and green strip. With Josh Neill being ruled out of action for the encounter, only seven players from last year's teams will feature again. Muller will be joined in the SA Schools matchday squad by lock AJ Meyer (Grey College), centre Ethan Adams (Grey College), fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya (Westville) and replacement prop Jordan Jooste (Paarl Boys High). André Poulton (prop, Jeppe) and Briint Davids (flanker, Milnerton) are the two returning players in the SA Schools 'A' starting team. Quinton Potgieter (replacement flanker, Paarl Gimnasium) has taken Neill's place in the SA Schools team, with his place in the 'A' squad going to Elwin Janse van Vuuren of Affies. Ian Schwartz, SA Rugby's General Manager for Participation and Development, urged the players to make the most of this opportunity to showcase their talent. 'We celebrate not just the talent on the field, but the journey that brought them here. This fixture is more than a match – it's a showcase of South Africa's schools rugby depth, resilience, and promise,' said Schwartz. 'These teams represent the best of the best that were in action at the FNB U18 Craven Week, and we can't wait to see them in action, with the Under-18 International Series on the horizon. Date confirmed for biggest ever SA schoolboy rugby First XV clash
The two standout rugby schools in South Africa in 2025 – Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys' High – will clash in early August to determine once and for all who's No 1 in the country. The Cape rugby powerhouses have enjoyed stellar seasons to date and it's nearly impossible to separate them in terms of No 1 and 2 in the land. However, all will be decided – barring a draw – on Saturday, 2 August. Paarl Gimnasium will host the fixture giving them – on paper at least – an advantage. It promises to be the biggest schoolboy match in living memory – if not ever. Any attempt at ranking South Africa's First XV rugby schools is guaranteed to upset as many readers as it will please. The simple fact of the matter is that there is NO possible way of accurately determining a definitive list. Many lists are to be found floating around the internet – none of which are in fact 'official'. While it's true that thanks to an increase in the number of schoolboy rugby festivals around the country more schools are playing schools they previously wouldn't have faced, no school plays every other school both home and away during the season. Hence, every list should be taken with a pinch of salt and is subjective at best. Having said that, with the second term now finished and with provinces preparing for the upcoming U18 Craven Week, here is the unofficial 'official' First XV Top 20 rankings list. NOTE: This year's U18 Craven Week will take place from 7 to 12 July at Middelburg Hoërskool in Mpumalanga.
