2027 BMW M5 LCI Spied With Cleaner Neue Klasse Looks

Our spies on the Old Continent have caught the facelift of the G90 BMW M5, and they tell us to expect plenty of changes, and not just on the surface. The current super sedan and its wagon sibling were only introduced a year ago, but BMW is not one to withhold new technology or even new design cues for future generations. Instead, the M5's mid-cycle update, or Life Cycle Impulse, as BMW calls it, will bring with it a look inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concept and an interior with BMW's new Panoramic iDrive system, which was previewed at the Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of the year. The new M5 will change little about its lower front and rear fascias, but the top half of each end of the car will gain completely new lighting units. At the front, the trademark kidney grilles will frame the width of the car, with Iconic Glow illumination giving the M5 a distinctive nighttime signature. Moving backward, the hood may be slightly massaged, but the wing mirrors seem unchanged, as do most of the other body lines, including the door panels and side skirts. Interestingly, however, the roof does not appear to be made of carbon fiber or BMW's incoming plant-based alternative, and we don't see a recess down its spine as on the current M5. Recent leaks reveal that the next-generation M3 is unlikely to get a composite roof either, but perhaps BMW wants to reserve that for Competition models, as was once the case. At the back of the M5 LCI, the new taillight clusters are still placeholder units that won't be offered to customers, but their shape indicates that they won't deviate much from the current design. Future M cars are expected to have unique headlight graphics (and possibly colors), so we expect something similar at the rear. Then again, a quad-exit exhaust with a massive diffuser panel may be enough. We're not expecting much in the way of changes under the hood. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain will carry over, and our spies say we should not expect any increases in output (a combined 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, for the record). A debut will happen sometime in 2026, possibly near the end of the year. Unfortunately, even though the M5 was just hit with a price increase for the 2026 model year, our spies say the facelift will cost around €150,000, or over $176,000. That's more than 50 grand pricier than the M5 is today, so we hope BMW can justify the extra outlay. Less weight, perhaps? We can only hope... BMW Will Make 5 Series Buyers Wait For New Looks And Tech

The current-generation G60 BMW 5 Series was officially revealed a little more than two years ago, on 24 May 2023, and in Bimmer land, that means it's starting to get a little old. BMW likes to put the latest and most advanced technology possible in each of its model updates, so the G60's now-obsolete rotary iDrive wheel and associated systems are beginning to feel a little "last season," so to speak. However, despite the fact that BMW's new Panoramic iDrive infotainment system was revealed six months ago, the 5er isn't getting its mid-cycle update, or Life Cycle Impulse, as early as planned. According to a reliable insider who provides updates on the Bimmerpostforum, the G60 LCI will arrive four months late. According to the post, updates for June 2025 include moving the launch of the updated G60 from March 2027 to July. The same report claims that the next X5 (codenamed G65) will be in production until July 2035, which means it will need to satisfy the market for nine years, while the current F70 1 Series and F74 2 Series Gran Coupe will stick around two years longer than originally anticipated, until October 2032. Back to SUVs for a second, and the assumption is that the G66 X6 and G67 X7 will have similarly long production cycles. Finally, the same report says that the U.S.-spec Z4 M40i and both versions of Toyota Gazoo Racing's Supra will continue to be produced in Austria at the Magna Steyr facility for another two months, only ending production in May 2026. No reasons were given for these extended production cycles, but the ever-changing geopolitical environment may be a contributing factor. The new 5 Series will get the latest infotainment tech, says the forum post, adding that, along with Panoramic Vision, a passenger display will become an optional extra. On the outside, we expect the G60 facelift to wear a new face inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse and Vision Neue Klasse X concepts. The look has already become evident in spy shots of the next-gen M3, as well as the updated G90 M5 seen below, so it's inevitable that the 5er will make the switch too. Hopefully, BMW doesn't create a Russian Doll situation with its styling, but we'll have to wait a little longer to find out. With production only commencing in July 2027, we suspect the reveal will happen at the very end of 2026, if not early in January 2027. With all of that being said, it wouldn't be a surprise to see BMW at least mildly update the interior for 2026, unlocking earlier access to updated iDrive systems. The BMW 5 Series is getting a facelift, and unlike most facelifts this one will dramatically change the front-end appearance of the large German luxury sedan and wagon. As can be clearly seen in these spy photos, even under camouflage, the updated 5 Series is getting similar front-end styling to the Neue Klasse concept that previewed the upcoming electric i3. This brings a sharper face with a double-kidney grille that's shorter but wider, and headlights that are brought closer in line with the grille. It's not just changes up front, with the rear-end appearing to feature not only a new bumper but also new tail-lights. However, the ones on this prototype appear to be prototype units. According to Bimmerpost forum user ynguldyn, who claims to compile product information from leaks within BMW, the 5 Series facelift ('Life Cycle Impulse' in BMW parlance) will enter production in March 2027, taking the sedan out to June 2030. The 5 Series Touring wagon and the hot M5 will reportedly receive the same changes inside and out, and continue in production until February 2031. The update will reportedly bring not only revised exterior styling but also BMW's Panoramic iDrive interface. According to BMW, Panoramic iDrive incorporates four main elements: a pillar-to-pillar screen at the base of the windscreen, an available 3D head-up display, a central display screen, and a multifunction steering wheel with haptic controls. While other brands like Lincoln and Cadillac offer a similar array of screens in some of their vehicles, BMW's Panoramic iDrive system differs in keeping the pillar-to-pillar screen fairly slim, likely minimising distraction. The 5 Series will also reportedly get the option of a passenger screen, which we expect will have a privacy screen to prevent the driver from being able to see it. BMW won't roll out the exact same front-end styling across all its models. For example, the next-generation X7 was recently spied with a more upright front-end resembling that of the current 7 Series. The next-generation iX3, previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, features a similar shape to its front-end as the facelifted 5 Series and upcoming i3, but it wears a taller, skinnier double-kidney grille. BMW is continuing with its strategy of making its combustion-powered and electric vehicles (EVs) look largely the same, even as it rolls out a new dedicated EV platform called Neue Klasse. "The big push with EVs, these technologies and this design language, will transfer over the entire product portfolio including our combustion vehicles," BMW Group design director Adrian van Hooydonk told Top Gear. "For the customer it won't be difficult – they will all get new modern BMWs and they can choose the drivetrain. "There is some proportional difference on the exterior and a little on the interior [between combustion and electric BMWs] but the look and feel and user interface is going to be identical. It's a big change how you operate the vehicles."
