300 solar streetlights for Merotai villages

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: The solar streetlight being assembled. TAWAU: Eighteen villages in Merotai benefited from the installation of 300 solar lights to enhance safety and the well-being of residents in the area. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) President, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, said the installation indirectly helps ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians in areas lacking streetlight facilities. He said the implementation was carried out in stages since two years ago. 'Before this, the roads and alleys going into the villages were really dark at night, which could be dangerous for the people living there. 'Therefore, we took the initiative to install solar lights to brighten up the area and make it easier for villagers to carry out their activities at night,' he said. Liew said solar lights were cost-effective, do not require connection to the electricity supply, and can operate even during power outages. 'We will identify additional locations within the constituency that require solar lights and will consider subsequent installation phases based on needs and feedback from residents,' said Liew. The villages receiving the installation of these lights include Kuala Merotai; Kampung Iban Baharu and Lama; Sungai Udin; Kampung Langsat; Kampung Jagung; Kampung Kijang; Kampung Pengkalan Asli; Kampung Tanah Merah; Kampung Simpang Tiga; Kampung Mangaris; and Kampung Kelapa. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut; Kampung Hulu Haji Matahir; Kampung Haji Matahir; Kampung Beruang; Kampung Sungai Imam; Kampung Seri Bombalai; and Kampung Sungai Imam Bombalai Laut are also included. 'This is an ongoing effort and a social responsibility towards the villagers in Merotai.' Liew expressed his gratitude to all parties involved, including members of Parti Harapan Rakyat, who carried out the installation through a spirit of cooperation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS honours Merotai land pledge

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Christy Chok Text Size: Liew (left) presenting the gazetting letter for Kg Iban Merotai residents. TAWAU: Local authorities have identified a suitable site for the construction of a new Multipurpose Hall in the Merotai area here. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President Brigadier General (Rtd) Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said this follows the announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Feb 16 regarding the allocation of RM2 million for the new hall. 'Actually, we have identified several suitable locations for the construction, involving three infrastructures, the hall, a vehicle parking area and a field. 'Therefore, the chosen site, located on a field spanning over 1.2 hectares, is deemed highly suitable after considering its elevated position and flood-free status,' he said Monday. At the same time, the selection of the proposed site is also part of the long-term development plan for Pekan Merotai Baharu. Liew said the site is situated within the Pekan Merotai Baharu plan, near Kijang Point. 'The State Government wants this new hall to serve as the heart of community activities in Merotai, covering economics, socialand cultural aspects. 'I believe that if managed well, it can become a central public hub and another economic establishment for the people of Merotai,' he said. In addition to the new hall, Hajiji also announced an allocation of RM1 million for the installation of solar lights from the Jambatan Putih intersection to Kampung Sungai Udin aimed at lighting up the main Merotai – Kalabakan road. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut and Kampung Iban were officially gazetted as the latest recognised villages in Merotai. Liew said this shows the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah leadership's commitment to ensuring Merotai is not left behind in the Sabah Maju Jaya development wave even though it is located in an opposition-held area. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Land survey: 10,000 in Tawau to gain

Published on: Tuesday, July 01, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 Text Size: Liew mingling with the villagers during the event. TAWAU: A land survey covering four villages in Kukusan, including Kampung Sri Menanti, Airport Lama, Sentosa Block 4 and Kampung Hilltop, will be carried out soon, potentially benefiting more than 10,000 residents. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said the 88.54-acre land, long occupied by settlers, has received State-level approval for gazettement prior to the dissolution of the State Assembly. 'This is not a political stunt. The approval was given before the dissolution and is meant to address long-standing land issues,' he said after a dinner with village heads from Kukusan, here, last Sunday. He said the land approval letter was handed over to a representative of the Tawau Land and Survey Department to facilitate early survey work. 'Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the State Cabinet have agreed to approve the 88.54 acres of land for the villagers,' he said. Once the surveying process is complete, the villages will be eligible for basic facilities such as a multi-purpose hall, paved roads and housing assistance under the Sabah Maju Jaya programme. Liew urged political parties not to incite doubt among residents, stressing that the effort is aimed at solving long-term issues. 'Let us work together to get the land surveyed and structured. This is about the people's future,' he said. He said it is up to the people in Kukusan whether to continue supporting the government in the coming State election. 'If you feel the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government is performing and helping the people, then continue to support them,' he said. Liew also thanked the Chief Minister, the Department and the relevant parties. 'I have been helping the people even when I was not an elected representative, using my own means. What matters most is unity and moving forward together,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kampung Iban Merotai land approval not election gimmick

Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: TAWAU: The declaration of reserve land for Kampung Iban Merotai is not a political promise, but a long-overdue move approved even before the upcoming state election, said Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah. Speaking at the Gawai Day celebration in the village yesterday, the Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President stressed that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government, led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, had delivered on a 50-year wait within just three months. 'This isn't an empty promise. After 50 years, the villagers finally received legal land approval. This is a legacy they can pass on for generations,' Liew said. He urged villagers to support the government in the coming polls and dismissed claims that the land approval was an election ploy. 'The land now belongs to the people of Kampung Iban, permanently. Don't be swayed by political slander,' he added, promising to upgrade the village hall into a multipurpose centre if given the mandate. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? New ambulance, X-ray unit for Merotai Clinic

Published on: Tuesday, May 20, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025 Text Size: Liew visiting the Merotai Health Clinic. TAWAU: The addition of a new ambulance unit and an X-ray machine at the Merotai Besar Health Clinic is expected to significantly improve healthcare services for more than 14,650 residents in the Merotai state constituency. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) President Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said the issue received the attention of the Health Ministry Secretary-General and efforts were underway to deliver these facilities in the near future. 'We understand that more than 200 patients seek treatment daily at the Merotai Besar Health Clinic, which often leads to overcrowding,' he said during a visit to the clinic. 'Tawau General Hospital is located quite far from here, so an additional ambulance is urgently needed to ensure patients requiring follow-up treatment can be transferred efficiently.' Liew said the X-ray service would be vital for early screening, especially for high-risk groups such as senior citizens and those in need of medical assistance. 'The Health Ministry under Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad will continue improving healthcare incentives and services for communities in rural and suburban areas. Advertisement 'We have already secured funding for these facility upgrades. We thank the Ministry for its concern and commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of people in Merotai,' Liew said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
