Sydney Sweeney sparks a $346 million Wall Street surge with new ad
The term meme stock was coined after companies including GameStop and Blackberry saw their share prices surge in 2021 despite little in the way of updates about their underlying performance. The vertiginous rally triggered the collapse of a hedge fund that had bet against GameStop's stock and helped inspire the 2023 film Dumb Money starring Paul Dano. American Eagle's stock was down almost 50 per cent so far this year prior to this week's rally after it pulled its annual forecasts because of tariff uncertainty. The company primarily sources its products from China. Ross Mayfield, an analyst at Baird Private Wealth Management, said meme stocks were a symbol of how stock markets had been 'gamblified'. He said: 'It says to me nothing about the level of interest rates or financial conditions. This is retail traders moving individual stocks that are heavily shorted. 'It reflects more the gambling culture permeating financial markets. These are not being bid up because of a good earnings report. It's because of a Sydney Sweeney ad campaign.' Loading Sweeney, who has 25.2 million followers on Instagram, has fronted campaigns for the likes of Ford, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and luxury fashion brand Miu Miu. As well as being known for her screen roles, Sweeney has become a prominent figure in popular culture and found herself wrapped up in North American culture wars.

Paul Dano to Write and Direct Comedy For Universal Pictures and The Daniels — GeekTyrant
Almost a decade ago, actor Paul Dano ( Little Miss Sunshine , There Will Be Blood , Love & Mercy ) and filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert blew away Sundance Film Festival attendees with Swiss Army Man , but now the trio now looks ready to reunite on Dano's next director outing. Deadline reports that Dano is set to write and is in talks to direct a new untitled comedy for Universal Pictures, with Kwan, Scheinert and their partner Jonathan Wang producing through their Playgrounds banner. Dano is also in talks to produce. Plot details are being kept under wraps other then it being a high-concept, original comedy. The Daniels have a first-look deal at the studio and, while they are still deep in development on a follow-up to their Oscar Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, this film would mark one of the first major projects they are solely producing under the deal. Dano just completed shooting the Olivier Assayas film The Wizard of the Kremlin in which he plays the title character amongst a cast that includes Jude Law, Alicia Vikander and Jeffrey Wright.

THE BATMAN: PART II Gets Promising Script Update, First Draft Almost Ready — GeekTyrant
While we continue to wait for Robert Pattinson's return as Gotham's brooding protector, there's finally some good news to share. The Batman: Part II has gotten a welcome script update, and it sounds like director Matt Reeves is getting close to the finish line. As reported by TheWrap, Reeves 'has been sending pages for more than half a year' and a 'first full draft of the script is expected to be delivered by Memorial Day.' That's a promising sign for a film that fans thought slipping into development limbo. Reeves has been taking his time crafting this follow-up and he's been doing it while he's been dealing with some personal matters. The original The Batman hit theaters in March 2024 and offered a gritty, detective-driven take on the Dark Knight. Starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, and Paul Dano as The Riddler, the film found success with both critics and audiences. The sequel has been in development ever since it was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2022. Originally aiming for a 2026 release, but is now locked in for October 1, 2027. While that date still feels far off, the film has the potential to hit that production start window in late 2025 or early 2026. Warner Bros. hasn't shared any plot details yet, and no new cast or characters have been confirmed. That said, with the first draft nearly done, don't be surprised if more info starts to trickle out in the coming months. Until then, the Bat-signal remains lit.
