THERE WAS A bronze medal for Ireland today at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. Tiarnán O'Donnell and Sadhbh Ní Laoighre earned a podium position in the A Final of the PR3 Mixed Double Sculls. The duo raced in the PR3 category due to a lack of entries in their own PR2 classification. The event provided valuable racing experience for the new crew. Meanwhile, Back-to-back Olympic champions Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy will face off in the A Final of the Men's Double Sculls after progressing from the semi-finals in their respective boats. McCarthy and Konan Pazzaia won their semi-final. The duo led from the start, holding off strong challenges from the New Zealand crew and the second Irish boat. They crossed the line with a time of 6:11.43, which was faster than the time posted by Serbia in the first semi-final. O'Donovan finished third alongside Olympic bronze medallist Daire Lynch in their semi-final. The crew were in fifth position at the 1000-metre mark, just two seconds off the leaders. They moved up to fourth by the 1500-metre mark and produced a strong sprint finish to overtake Great Britain and qualify for the A Final. McCarthy and Pazzaia will be in Lane 3 for the final while O'Donovan and Lynch will race from Lane 6. Fiona Murtagh has qualified for the final of the Women's Single Sculls after winning her semi-final race. Murtagh was holding clear water by the 1500-metre mark, leading second-place Denmark by three seconds. In the A Final, she will face Great Britain's Lauren Henry, who also produced a commanding win in her semi-final. Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde placed fourth in the semi-final of the Women's Double Scull, sending them through to tomorrow's B Final. They raced in a highly competitive heat featuring China, the winners of the last World Cup Regatta in Varese, and Olympic champion Lola Anderson of Great Britain. The pair sat in sixth position at the 1000-metre mark before overtaking the New Zealand crew by at 1500 metres. A powerful sprint in the final stretch saw them edge ahead of the British crew to finish fourth with a time of 6:53.9. Meanwhile, Siobhán McCrohan finished fifth in the A Final of the Lightweight Women's Single Sculls in a time of 7:47.16. Alison Bergin took fourth in the D Final of the Women's Single Scull, clocking 7:58.51. Olympic gold medallists Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy's respective crews will go head-to-head in the men's double sculls A final at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland after advancing from their semi-final heat. McCarthy - with whom three-time Olympic medallist O'Donovan won back-to-back golds in the lightweight double sculls at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 - and team-mate Konan Pazzaia won the second semi-final heat in a time of 06:11.43, having led from the start. They will be in Lane 3 for Sunday's final, while O'Donovan and Daire Lynch - a bronze medallist from the Paris Games - will line up in the sixth lane after overtaking British pair James Gare and Tobias Schroder to take third in the same semi-final heat in 06:14.32. Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Fiona Murtagh is also into an A final in the women's single sculls after winning her heat. She will face Great Britain's Lauren Henry in Sunday's decider. In the lightweight women's single sculls A final, Siobhán McCrohan finished fifth with a strong finish seeing her jump ahead of Peru's Valeria Palacios with Austria's Lara Tiefenthaler taking gold. Alison Bergin finished fourth in the D final of the women's single scull, finishing fourth with a time of 07:58.51 while Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde will compete in the women's double scull B final on Sunday after finishing fourth in their semi-final.

Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy to face off in World Rowing Cup semi-final

BACK-TO-BACK Olympic champions Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy will be in competing boats in the semi-final of the men's double sculls at the World Rowing Cup at Lucerne tomorrow. O'Donovan and Daire Lynch are safely through to the semi after finishing second in their heat this morning. The Irish duo tried to overhaul the leaders in the closing stages but Aleksandr Iakovlev and Andrei Potapkin (AIN, or neutral athletes) held on by 0.24 seconds. 'Tough enough going,' said Lynch afterwards. 'Hopefully we'll get better.' In the semi-final, O'Donovan will come up against long-time partner McCarthy – with whom he has won two Olympic gold medals in the lightweight double sculls – and Konan Pazzaia, who also finished second in their heat today. No Paul O'Donovan as Ireland crews named for 2025 World Rowing Cup

Paul O'Donovan will not feature for Rowing Ireland at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne as the crews are named for the 2025 event. Bronze medal winners at the European Rowing Championships Fintan McCarthy and Daire Lynch will row in the M2x while in the M4x will see Ronan Byrne, Brian Colsh, Adam Murphy and Andrew Sheehan compete. Fiona Murtagh, who won silver in the European Rowing Championships, and Alison Bergin will compete in the W1x with Siobhán McCrohan going in the LW1x event. Margaret Cremen and Zoe Hyde are paired for the W2x. Claire Feerick, Aisling Hayes, Imogen Magner and Natalie Long will row in the foursome W4 event. In the PR2 Mix2x Sadhbh Ní Laoighaire and Tiernan O'Donnell will team up and will compete in the PR3 category for classification pruposes. The competition will take place from June 27-29. Speaking ahead of the competition High Performance Lead Coach Dominic Casey said 'Lucerne is one of the standout events in the rowing calendar. "The squad selected brings together a mix of youth and experience, and it's a key opportunity for us to benchmark against world-class crews as we look ahead to the next major test.'

Corkman Today at 10:48 Skibbereen Rowing Club were honoured recently for their excellence in Irish and international rowing. Skibbereen Rowing Club were afforded a special civic reception by the Mayor of the County of Cork at County Hall on Monday, May 12. Skibbereen Rowing Club which is located on the banks of the Ilen River was founded in 1970. The rowing club which is the most successful rowing club in Ireland has produced numerous world class athletes and they were honoured for their outstanding achievements which includes ten Olympians since 2000. A civic reception is the highest honour the Mayor of the County can give to a group or individual. It was bestowed upon Olympic medal winners Paul O'Donovan, Gary O'Donovan, Fintan McCarthy and Emily Hegarty and their fellow Olympians Eugene Coakley, Timmy Harnedy, Richard Coakley, Aoife Casey, Lydia Heaphy, Jake McCarthy and their head coach Dominic Casey. Mayor Carroll said Skibbereen Rowing Club is a beacon of excellence in Irish and international rowing. 'It is with immense pride and joy that we celebrate the outstanding achievements of our local heroes, athletes who have not only excelled on the national stage but have also brought international acclaim to Skibbereen and County Cork. 'Skibbereen Rowing Club has firmly established itself as the most successful rowing club in the country. On behalf of the people of County Cork I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the athletes and their coaches. In particular, head coach Dominic Casey, their families, and supporters who have been part of this wonderful journey,' he added. Chief Executive of Cork County Council Moira Murrell said: 'We are proud to celebrate the success of our athletes, Skibbereen Rowing Club, and everyone in the community who supports them.
