MRT Corp targets open tender for bridge portion of penang lrt line in october
MALAYSIA Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) is targeting to launch the open tender for the proposed bridge portion of Penang's Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project this October. Its chief executive officer (CEO), Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, said the design stage has been completed and the company is now awaiting approval from the relevant authorities. 'The bridge design has been carefully developed to provide maximum flexibility for the port industry in Penang to grow, especially considering the economic significance of the sector alongside tourism. 'We have held discussions with the Penang Port Commission to ensure the rail bridge will not obstruct maritime routes,' he told reporters here today. Mohd Zarif said the design of the bridge would take into account shipping lanes, as the port is the lifeline for Penang's future. He added that the possibility that Penang Port might be upgraded into a full-fledged container port, both at North Port and South Port, must be considered. The MRT Corp CEO said the proposed bridge alignment would span between the North and South ports in Butterworth, necessitating careful long-term planning to accommodate future port expansion. 'Our bridge will be 62 metres above sea level, which is taller than the first Penang Bridge, but still within limits to avoid interfering with aviation pathways. 'For safety, fencing will be installed along the bridge, which will also feature a pedestrian crossing linking Butterworth to Komtar on the island,' he said. Looking ahead, Mohd Zarif added that MRT Corp envisions the need for four LRT lines covering both Penang Island and Seberang Perai to deliver full connectivity and long-term transport efficiency. — BERNAMA

Free rides on Penang ferries on Aug 31, Sept 15 and 16
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) has announced free ferry services for Malaysians on Aug 31 as well as Sept 15 and 16 in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day. SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the initiative supports the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, particularly the move to declare an extra public holiday on Sept 15 in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration, which will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre in Butterworth on Sept 16. "The free ferry service offered on these three important dates reflects SPPP's commitment as the Port Authority and Regulatory Body, along with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) as the port operator, in encouraging Malaysians to use public transport when commemorating key national events. "In addition, this initiative will also help ease the burden on Malaysians," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 24). Yeoh also welcomed the government's strong commitment to introducing strategic measures that not only help ease the cost of living but also reflect a deep appreciation for and recognition of all Malaysians. – Bernama

Hwajing Travel & Tours inks strategic partnership with Chinese cruise vessel M/V Piano Land
PENANG: Domestic premier cruise agency Hwajing Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd has signed a strategic partnership with Astro Ocean Cruise to bring the M/V Piano Land, operated by Astro Ocean Cruise, a Chinese cruise line, to Malaysia. This is a significant step by Hwajing Travel to establish Malaysia as a leading regional cruise hub. The recent signing ceremony, held at the Penang Port Commission, was attended by the Penang Port Commission and the deputy chairman of Tourism Malaysia Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin. The agreement was signed between Hwajing Travel managing director Kenny Cheong and Astro Ocean Cruise vice president Jian-feng Tong. 'In line with Transport Minister Anthony Loke's vision to position Malaysia as a premier homeport destination, we are committed to driving the nation's cruise tourism agenda forward,' said Yeoh. 'By encouraging travellers to begin and conclude their cruise itineraries in Malaysia, we aim to boost tourist arrivals, create local employment opportunities, and showcase Malaysia's vibrant culture, heritage, and cuisine on the global stage. Making its maiden voyage on November 30, M/V Piano Land will be the first Chinese cruise ship to be homeported in Malaysia. This marks Hwajing Travel's second major international cruise collaboration, following last year's successful homeporting of an Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, operated by Costa Cruises. The upcoming itineraries will include a 3-day, 2-night sailing (Penang – Port Klang – Penang) and a 4-day, 3-night voyage covering Penang, Langkawi, and Port Klang. Passengers will be able to embark from either Penang or Port Klang, offering greater convenience and accessibility for Malaysian travellers, as well as those from neighbouring countries.
