Pilgrims travelling by road during Arbaeen: PPP leader urges govt to provide security
LAHORE: Syed Hassan Murtaza, General Secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab, has called upon the federal and provincial governments to provide complete security to pilgrims travelling by road during Arbaeen. He raised the question, 'Why can't an ordinary taxpayer travel within his own country by road?' Emphasizing the state's responsibility, he stated, 'The security of pilgrims travelling to Karbala for Arbaeen is the duty of the state,' and urged the federal and provincial governments to ensure their safety with the support of security agencies. Murtaza highlighted that 'the ban on road travel for Arbaeen has severely impacted ordinary citizens.' He added that after Hajj and Umrah, pilgrimages are now being made inaccessible to the poor. Arbaeen pilgrims save every penny to travel with their families for Ziyarat, and prefer road travel because it is more economical. He further stated that advance payments for buses, hotels, and all travel and accommodation arrangements have already been made. Murtaza stressed that it's not just about the pilgrims' money being wasted—those going to Karbala have a deep emotional connection with Imam Hussain (AS). He warned that pilgrims are currently suffering mental distress, which could lead to protests and sit-ins. Murtaza demanded that the government must not invite the curses of pilgrims by closing the land route at the last moment but instead take immediate steps to facilitate their journey. He asserted that the government must take public issues seriously and address the legitimate demands of the pilgrims. Murtaza reaffirmed PPP's stance, saying, 'The Peoples Party has always been the voice of the people, and we will continue to advocate for the rights of Arbaeen pilgrims.' Homes for flood-hit families: Sindh People's Housing Scheme ‘largest' project in world: Sharjeel
HYDERABAD: A major ceremony was held at Rawal House, Rahooki in Tando Jam under the Sindh People's Housing Scheme, where ownership rights of newly constructed homes were distributed among flood-affected families. Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, attended as chief guest and addressed the event. He said this is not a routine gathering but a 'historic message being sent to the world that the Pakistan Peoples Party is a symbol of public service.' He asserted that the Sindh Peoples Housing Scheme is not just the largest in Pakistan but the largest such project in the world, aiming to provide free homes to 2.1 million families. He said the initiative stems from PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision, formed after visiting flood-hit areas in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 rains. Acting on Bilawal's direction, the Sindh government made immediate arrangements to provide permanent housing for those affected. The minister acknowledged the initial scepticism about the feasibility of building so many homes, but noted that Bilawal Bhutto made it clear that 'this is not a political statement but a commitment to public service these homes must be built.' Following extensive planning and engagement with the World Bank and international agencies, the massive housing programme began. A distinctive feature of the scheme, Memon said, is that ownership rights are being granted in the names of women, to empower them and ensure stability within families. Those awarded today, he said, had lost everything and endured harsh conditions in temporary camps, but now thanks to the Peoples Party government's efforts they have secure homes and financial support channelled through bank accounts. He added that the Sindh scheme is unprecedented in scale, noting that while 800,000 homes were rebuilt after the Nepal earthquake, Sindh's programme delivers 2.1 million. 'It deserves recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records,' he said. Memon also highlighted other PPP government initiatives, such as the only Cyber Knife equipped hospital providing free cancer treatment, and efforts to install solar panels in flood victims' homes to address electricity shortages. He announced a new programme 'Maash' for employment and economic empowerment will be launched soon. Paying tribute to President Asif Ali Zardari on his 70th birthday, Memon cited landmark achievements, including the 18th Amendment, NFC Award, Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan, and Benazir Income Support Programme, and the country's turnaround from wheat importer to exporter. He maintained that the Peoples Party considers public service a duty rather than a favour, and challenged rival parties to point to any single comparable completed project. Sindh Assembly member Imdad Pitafi and Commissioner Hyderabad Fayaz Abbasi also addressed the ceremony, affirming that 99% of the 45,000 homes targeted for Hyderabad division have been completed. The senior minister said, "the Peoples Party believes in public service and providing free homes to 2.1 million flood-hit families is the largest housing scheme not only in Sindh, but the largest scheme in the world." The senior minister mentioned, a distinctive feature of the scheme is that ownership rights were granted in the names of women to empower them and ensure stability within families. He also mentioned that the govt would install solar panels on the houses of flood victims.

Tens of thousands rally to protest Spanish prime minister
June 8 (UPI) -- Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in central Madrid Sunday to push back on the policies of Spain's socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez, demanding an early election as his party continues to battle corruption allegations. Sunday's protest was organized under the slogan "mafia or democracy" by the opposition conservative People's party, and drew between 45,000 and 50,000 people, according to official estimates. Organizers put the attendance at closer to 100,000, the Guardian reported. Sanchez, his family and his Spanish Socialist Workers' party, have faced corruption allegations over the past year, but have intensified in recent days as a former member of his party was accused of initiating a campaign against the Guardia Civil police after officers investigated Sanchez's wife, Begona Gomez, his brother, David Sanchez, and former transportation minister Jose Luis Abalos. Demonstrators gathered Sunday in the midday sun in Plaza de Espana, carrying signs that read "Sanchez traitor" and "government resign." People's party leader Alberto Nunex Feijoo renewed calls for a snap election. "Spain needs a revolution of decent and freedom - and will lead that revolution from the streets and at the ballot boxes, Freijoo told the protestors. "Mr. Sanchez, stop hiding, stop lying and stop running. Spain knows only too well who you are and what you have done. Yield to democracy. Call an election: we want one now because no one voted for this, not even your supporters. Sanchez has pushed back on his opponents, accusing them of conducting a harassment and bullying operation against him and his family, calling allegations against his wife are designed to bring about his "personal and political collapse."
