Homes for flood-hit families: Sindh People's Housing Scheme ‘largest' project in world: Sharjeel
Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, attended as chief guest and addressed the event.
He said this is not a routine gathering but a 'historic message being sent to the world that the Pakistan Peoples Party is a symbol of public service.' He asserted that the Sindh Peoples Housing Scheme is not just the largest in Pakistan but the largest such project in the world, aiming to provide free homes to 2.1 million families.
He said the initiative stems from PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision, formed after visiting flood-hit areas in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 rains. Acting on Bilawal's direction, the Sindh government made immediate arrangements to provide permanent housing for those affected.
The minister acknowledged the initial scepticism about the feasibility of building so many homes, but noted that Bilawal Bhutto made it clear that 'this is not a political statement but a commitment to public service these homes must be built.' Following extensive planning and engagement with the World Bank and international agencies, the massive housing programme began.
A distinctive feature of the scheme, Memon said, is that ownership rights are being granted in the names of women, to empower them and ensure stability within families.
Those awarded today, he said, had lost everything and endured harsh conditions in temporary camps, but now thanks to the Peoples Party government's efforts they have secure homes and financial support channelled through bank accounts.
He added that the Sindh scheme is unprecedented in scale, noting that while 800,000 homes were rebuilt after the Nepal earthquake, Sindh's programme delivers 2.1 million. 'It deserves recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records,' he said.
Memon also highlighted other PPP government initiatives, such as the only Cyber Knife equipped hospital providing free cancer treatment, and efforts to install solar panels in flood victims' homes to address electricity shortages. He announced a new programme 'Maash' for employment and economic empowerment will be launched soon.
Paying tribute to President Asif Ali Zardari on his 70th birthday, Memon cited landmark achievements, including the 18th Amendment, NFC Award, Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan, and Benazir Income Support Programme, and the country's turnaround from wheat importer to exporter.
He maintained that the Peoples Party considers public service a duty rather than a favour, and challenged rival parties to point to any single comparable completed project.
Sindh Assembly member Imdad Pitafi and Commissioner Hyderabad Fayaz Abbasi also addressed the ceremony, affirming that 99% of the 45,000 homes targeted for Hyderabad division have been completed. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of property documents to deserving women.

Governor's letter sparks row
An open letter from Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif urging calamity-hit status for flood-affected districts has triggered a strong public response from the provincial government, marking the latest instance of political back-and-forth between coalition partners Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP). Governor Khan, a PPP appointee, wrote an open letter asking the provincial administration to declare Chakwal, Jhelum, and Hafizabad as calamity-hit areas. Following visits to the affected regions, he described extensive damage to roads, bridges, and homes, and urged immediate aid and official designation to accelerate rehabilitation. Punjab Information Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari responded publicly, suggesting the letter bypassed administrative norms. She said relief operations were already under way and led directly by the chief minister. "There was no need for a public letter," she said. "If you truly want to raise the issue, write to your own party or the federal leadership." She pointed out that Maryam Nawaz had already visited Chakwal and issued orders for relief efforts. Bukhari implied the governor's letter was more about optics than urgency, dismissing it as a symbolic gesture that added little to the ground response. In the letter to the chief minister regarding the recent heavy rains in Punjab and the damage caused by flood after his visit to the affected areas of Chakwal, Jhelum and Hafizabad, the governor called for declaring the areas as disaster hit. It called steps to repair the damage caused by the flood as soon as possible, pointing out that life in the affected cities had been severely affected. Bridges connecting cities have been broken and roads washed away, causing difficulties for the people. The houses, livestock and valuables of people have been washed away in the flood, the governor stated. This latest exchange is part of a familiar pattern between the governor and the provincial administration. In November last year, Governor Khan had criticised both the PML-N-led federal and Punjab governments over their handling of a PTI-led protest march. He condemned the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister's use of state machinery for the rally but also questioned the Punjab government's preparedness and criticised the federal response, including the widespread use of shipping containers to block roads. Bukhari, in turn, questioned the governor's priorities and suggested he seemed more focused on opposition politics. She credited Maryam Nawaz's leadership for discouraging Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activities in Punjab during that period. The two sides also disagreed over appointments in higher education. Governor Khan objected to receiving only one nominee per university for vice chancellor's positions, in contrast to the required three-candidate shortlist. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz defended the process, saying the selections were based on merit and had been thoroughly reviewed. Flood-hit families get ownership rights of new houses
Ownership rights of the newly-constructed homes were distributed among flood-affected families during a ceremony, held under the Sindh Peoples Housing Scheme at Rawal House, Rahooki, in Tando Jam. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon was the chief guest at the event. The senior minister said, "the Peoples Party believes in public service and providing free homes to 2.1 million flood-hit families is the largest housing scheme not only in Sindh, but the largest scheme in the world." He also mentioned that the govt would install solar panels on the houses of flood victims.
