'Persona 5: The Phantom X' Brings The Series To Your Phone—and It's Shockingly Good
Jun 27, 2025 3:11 PM The free-to-play game is the first time the JRPG is available on mobile, offering fans a quick fix with a few hidden costs. Still from Persona 5: The Phantom X. Courtesy of fortyseven communications Persona games are herculean efforts to finish. A single playthrough of any game in the main series, which includes everything from saving the world to studying for finals, frequently clocks in at around 100 hours. Much of that time is spent building relationships with the game's characters and world by hanging out with friends, doing mundane tasks like laundry, or finding new parts of the city to explore. It creates a dedication that leaves many players so attached to each game's cast that they'll eagerly jump into new experiences just to get more time with them. Persona 5 was no exception. Since its launch in 2016, the JRPG has inspired spinoffs across a variety of genres, from rhythm game Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight to the strategy-based Persona 5 Tactica . On June 26, co-developers Atlus, Sega, and Perfect World released Persona 5: The Phantom X —a spinoff for PC and mobile that mirrors the original game so closely, it works as both an easy introduction to the series, and an enjoyable re-entry into Persona 5 's world. Much like with Persona 5 , Phantom X s follows a group of teenage vigilantes known as Phantom Thieves who gain the power to summon powerful entities, Personas, to fight evil forces. More directly, the game feels like Persona 5 , adopting its turn-based battle system, music, visual style, social links, and more to deliver an experience on PC and mobile devices that works surprisingly well for a series with so much to do. While The Phantom X opens almost identically to the original game, it quickly veers away from Persona 5 's cast to establish its own. Something is off in the world of high school student Nagisa Kamishiro, where people are losing the desires that guide their free will and dreams. In order to help people reclaim their lives, Nagisa and his friends will need to crawl through the Metaverse, a foe-filled alternate reality only they can enter, and fight back. The Phantom X is free-to-play, but is a gacha game, meaning it has in-game purchases and relies on randomized pulls for things like characters from other games in the series and items. It's a controversial style that can prompt players to fork over cash endlessly to get the experience they want. Because of that system, The Phantom X is best played at a daily pace, rather than long stretches. The game has daily activities and awards to earn, and developers plan to continue releasing content for it over the coming months. Right now, the game only features Japanese voice acting and English subtitles, which may be a deterrent for some fans. Although the Persona series is available on handheld consoles, like the PS Vita or Nintendo Switch, The Phantom X is the first time the more traditional JRPG version is available on mobile. The game uses touch controls to move through its world and select commands. Its cutscenes work well even on a small screen, and though its menu can feel at times cramped (depending on your screen size) it's an experience that flows seamlessly. Mobile platforms are well-suited to the dungeon crawling aspects of the game especially, allowing for much needed breaks and the ability to quickly jump back in at any time. For players who want to relive the highlights of the Persona 5 universe, The Phantom X is an easy recommendation. Its faithful recreation of the original game's best elements, mixed with a new story, makes the experience feel like a premium one—and a promising look at what a Persona game could look like on your phone.

Persona 5: The Phantom X is coming to PC and mobile next month
There's a new Persona game coming very soon, but sadly it isn't time for the next mainline entry just yet. Rather, Persona 5: The Phantom X is a spinoff in a similar vein to Persona 5 Strikers . Like that game, The Phantom X is set in the same universe as Atlus' incredibly successful RPG, Persona 5 , but unlike Strikers , this one features a new cast of characters, including a talking owl named Lufel that presumably takes the place of Morgana. First announced in 2023, Persona 5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play live service game from Chinese publisher Perfect World, which released the game in open beta in its native country in April last year. It introduces a fresh team of Phantom Thieves and seems to be aiming for the classic Persona blend of high school drama, social interaction and dungeon crawling with impossibly stylish turn-based battles. There's a new 'Synergy' system that develops as you form bonds with NPCs, new mini-games and a PvE mode called The Velvet Trials. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the "Content and social-media partners" setting to do so. Underpinning the whole experience will be a free-to-play model, the exact nature of which is not yet clear. Time will tell if gacha tactics will get in the way of a good time, and how well the familiar Persona gameplay loop translates to your phone, but the game's official website says it's intended for both Persona 5 fans and newcomers. Atlus will be hoping that P5X tides fans over until it has any news on Persona 6 . Its most recent release was last year's Metaphor: ReFantazio , and the studio is currently saying nothing about the follow-up to Persona 5 , which launched in its original pre- Royal state way back in 2016. Persona 5: The Phantom X launches June 26 on PC, iOS and Android.

New Persona annoucement due this week but prepare for disappointment
Atlus has confirmed that a new Persona title will be unveiled on Thursday but despite what fans hope it's almost certainly not Persona 6. Persona 5 will be 10 years old next year. In that time there's been innumerable spin-offs, as well as a remake of Persona 3 and rumours that Persona 4 will be getting the same treatment. What there hasn't been any word on though is Persona 6. It was eight years between Persona 4 and 5, so even taking longer development times into account this isn't unusual, but it's frustrating for fans that literally the only thing we know about Persona 6 is that its main colour is green, rather than the red of its predecessor. Hopes rose today that maybe there'd finally be a reveal, as Atlus announced a livestream for a new Persona unveiling, but instead of Persona 6 it's just yet another Persona 5 spin-off. Persona 5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play live service game from Chinese publisher Perfect World, that has already been available in open beta in China since last April. It features a completely different Phantom Thief team but with similar gameplay to Persona 5, albeit streamlined for smartphones and filled with microtransactions. In short, it's probably the last thing fans wanted but presumably the annoucement this week is for the full release in Japan and (probably but not definitely) the West. Some fans have tried to convince themselves it is for Persona 6 but not only is the colour scheme and art style clearly that of Persona 5, but the owl emoji is a reference to the character Lufel, who is the game's equivalent of Morgana from the main game. If you have to see it all for yourself, the livestream takes place on Thursday, May 15 at 3pm BST. The YouTube video for the stream is already live and features artwork that makes it very clear that this is Persona 5: The Phantom X and not Persona 6. More Trending Sadly, there really is no clue as to when Persona 6 will be revealed, although when it does arrive it's expected to be multiformat, including for Xbox and the Switch 2. Given the critical and commerical success of Metaphor: ReFantazio, Atlus is in no rush to say or do anything about Persona 6, but the further we get away from Persona 5's original launch date the more likely an annoucement gets. It's possible Atlus may use one of the not-E3 summer showcases to unveil it, but it's just as likely they'll reveal it via one of their own events. There may even be a tease in the livestream on Thursday, but that seems unlikely. Perhaps the main question now is whether Persona 4's remake will be announced and/or released before Persona 6. Considering there's more evidence for its existence than for the sequel, that's probably quite likely. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter. Bruce Springsteen Soundtracks Imaginary Western On ‘Faithless'
Bruce Springsteen trots out his best husky twang amid mournful slide guitar lines on 'Faithless,' the third song to be released from his long-awaited collection of unreleased music, Tracks II: The Lost Albums. 'Faithless' is the title track to one of seven unheard, complete albums contained in the set, which arrives June 27 from Columbia. Faithless was previously described as a soundtrack to a 'spiritual Western' film that was never made. It was written during a two-week stint in Florida and recorded largely between the fall 2005 tour in support of Devils & Dust and the April 2006 release of We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. More from Spin: Ed Sheeran's New Album, 'Play,' Coming In September Wolfgang Van Halen Drafts Slash, Danny Trejo For 'The End' Video Evan Dando and the Axis of Weirdness 'This was a really unusual collection of songs,' the Boss admits of composing music for a film that didn't exist. 'You could recognize details and maybe a character or two. But for the most part, I just wrote atmospheric music that I thought would fit.' The album mostly features Springsteen, although producer Ron Aniello and E Street Band members Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Curtis King, Jr., Michelle Moore and Ada Dyer appear at times, as do Springsteen's wife Patti Scialfa and their children Evan and Sam. Beyond Faithless, Tracks II is divided into LA Garage Sessions '83, Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, Somewhere North of Nashville, Inyo, Twilight Hours and Perfect World. Somewhere North of Nashville features 'country combos with pedal steel,' Inyo includes 'richly woven border tales' and Twilight Hours is 'orchestra-driven, mid-century noir.' As for Perfect World, it is said to possess an 'arena-ready E Street flavor.' Springsteen and the E Street Band return to the road May 14 in Manchester, England. Bruce Springsteen's Mythic Lost Albums Compiled in New Box Set: Listen to 'Rain in the River'
All products featured on Pitchfork are independently selected by Pitchfork editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, Condé Nast may earn an affiliate commission. Bruce Springsteen, photo by Danny Clinch For decades, Bruce Springsteen fans have whispered of a suite of albums that the Boss recorded in full—particularly in the 1990s—but never released. That collection was known as Tracks II, and today, it became a reality. On June 27, seven albums of never-before-heard Springsteen music will be collected in a box set, spanning from 1983 to 2018. In a trailer, Springsteen describes going into his vault during the pandemic and polishing off these albums, in part to put to bed the narrative of his 'lost '90s.' Below, watch that trailer and listen to a new song, 'Rain in the River,' from the Perfect World collection. Plus, check out the box set's full tracklist. Among the seven albums are LA Garage Sessions '83—a bridge between Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A.—the 1993 Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, the abandoned movie soundtrack Faithless, an E Street Band–assisted country album called Somewhere North of Nashville, and the Western Stars preface Twilight Hours. Inyo is described as a set of cinematic border tales, while Perfect World is 'the one thing on this that wasn't initially conceived as an album,' says Springsteen. The complete set includes 74 songs that have never been heard, and a further eight new versions of songs that otherwise found the light of day. $350.00, Rough Trade Tracks II: The Lost Albums: LA Garage Sessions '83: 01 Follow That Dream 02 Don't Back Down On Our Love 03 Little Girl Like You 04 Johnny Bye Bye 05 Sugarland 06 Seven Tears 07 Fugitive's Dream 08 Black Mountain Ballad 09 Jim Deer 10 County Fair 11 My Hometown 12 One Love 13 Don't Back Down 14 Richfield Whistle 15 The Klansman 16 Unsatisfied Heart 17 Shut Out The Light 18 Fugitive's Dream (Ballad) Streets of Philadelphia Sessions: 01 Blind Spot 02 Maybe I Don't Know You 03 Something in the Well 04 Waiting on the End of the World 05 The Little Things 06 We Fell Down 07 One Beautiful Morning 08 Between Heaven and Earth 09 Secret Garden 10 The Farewell Party Faithless: 01 The Desert (Instrumental) 02 Where You Goin', Where You From 03 Faithless 04 All God's Children 05 A Prayer by the River (Instrumental) 06 God Sent You 07 Goin' to California 08 The Western Sea (Instrumental) 09 My Master's Hand 10 Let Me Ride 11 My Master's Hand (Theme) Somewhere North of Nashville 01 Repo Man 02 Tiger Rose 03 Poor Side of Town 04 Delivery Man 05 Under a Big Sky 06 Detail Man 07 Silver Mountain 08 Janey Don't You Lose Heart 09 You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone 10 Stand on It 11 Blue Highway 12 Somewhere North of Nashville Inyo: 01 Inyo 02 Indian Town 03 Adelita 04 The Aztec Dance 05 The Lost Charro 06 Our Lady of Monroe 07 El Jardinero (Upon the Death of Ramona) 08 One False Move 09 Ciudad Juarez 10 When I Build My Beautiful House Twilight Hours: 01 Sunday Love 02 Late in the Evening 03 Two of Us 04 Lonely Town 05 September Kisses 06 Twilight Hours 07 I'll Stand by You 08 High Sierra 09 Sunliner 10 Another You 11 Dinner at Eight 12 Follow the Sun Perfect World: 01 I'm Not Sleeping 02 Idiot's Delight 03 Another Thin Line 04 The Great Depression 05 Blind Man 06 Rain in the River 07 If I Could Only Be Your Lover 08 Cutting Knife 09 You Lifted Me Up 10 Perfect World Originally Appeared on Pitchfork
