Oregon Pinot Noir Rosé, Why Saignée Method Wines Stand Out

Close up of two women toasting with rosé wine. getty Over the past decade, Oregon has emerged as a significant producer of rosé wine. In 2024, wineries produced over 500,000 cases of rosé, with approximately 300,000 cases crafted from Pinot Noir, ranking Oregon third among U.S. rosé producers. I recently explored Oregon Pinot Noir rosés made by the Saignée method to see why this style consistently delivers standout quality. Below are brief backgrounds and tasting notes on select examples. Rosé wines typically range from light red to pink to salmon, but color alone doesn't define a rosé. Surprisingly, there's no strict standard: the most accepted definition is wine made from red grapes processed like white wine, with little or no skin contact. By this definition, even white wines made from red grapes, such as still white Pinot Noir or sparkling Blanc de Noir, technically count as rosé. Deeply colored wines can also qualify as rosé if skin contact was brief. There are four primary rosé production methods: Direct pressing — gently presses red grapes, extracting minimal color for the palest rosés; the most common method. Minimal skin contact — juice soaks with skins for a few hours, gaining slightly deeper color and flavor than direct press. Saignée — 'bleeds' off juice during red wine fermentation, intensifying the remaining red wine and producing a darker, more structured rosé from the drawn-off juice. Blending — mixing red and white wines; widely discouraged for still rosé but common for sparkling wines. Moreover, grapes specifically grown for rosé are often harvested at 4–5 tons per acre and picked at a lower Brix level (~21°) to achieve higher acidity but less flavor intensity. In contrast, Saignée rosé utilizes premium Pinot Noir, which is cropped at a lower rate of 2.5–3 tons per acre and harvested at a higher ripeness level (~23–24° Brix), resulting in more fruit-forward flavors, with higher alcohol by volume (ABV) and a firmer backbone. On the spectrum from white to red, direct pressing and minimal skin contact produce light, crisp, floral styles with orchard fruits and bright acidity, which stylistically are closer to white wines. Saignée rosés and wines with more prolonged skin contact tend to lean more red-wine-like, featuring deeper color, bolder red fruit, a clear tannic backbone, and a structure that can benefit from bottle aging. They shine with food and effortlessly bridge white and red pairings. Below is a closer look and tasting notes for standout Oregon Pinot Noir rosés made by the Saignée or comparable methods. 5 U.S. Wineries Making Brilliant Vermouth

getty Vermouth is omnipresent these days. Between the contradictory trends of low-ABV beverages and the ever-favored martini, the popularity of vermouth—a botanical-infused, fortified wine—is surging. Not to mention, vermouth, as a category, is also being propelled by the United States' embrace of European aperitivo culture. 'Premium-plus light aperitifs have been making headway in a number of the top 20 markets,' shared Emily Neill, IWSR chief operating officer research and operations, in a statement, adding that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of light aperitifs, including vermouth, witnessed an increase of 18 percent between 2018 and 2023 and is predicted to accelerate to over 19 percent CAGR between 2023-2028. 'With a typical ABV of between 15 and 22 percent, they [aperitifs] can be served over ice with a slice of orange or lemon, but owe much of their success to their versatility — consumed in a spritz with soda water or in a number of cocktails, including the white negroni and the vesper,' emphasized Neill. The IWSR data focuses on the growth of premium European aperitif brands in the U.S.—popular labels include Carpano, Martini & Rossi, Cocchi and Dolin—but this consistent interest also explains why a handful of stateside wineries have invested in crafting their own vermouth. From Virginia to California, discover five U.S. wineries that are producing some compelling expressions of vermouth. getty Most oenophiles know this Sonoma-based winery for their site-specific Pinot Noir, but Scribe also produces a limited release of vermouth. In fact, the winery just released their latest Summer Vermouth, made with their estate Chardonnay. The base wine is fortified and infused with orange peel, wild fennel and lemon verbena for a delicate sip that can be simply savored over ice with an orange twist. Matthiasson Wines Twelve years ago, this Napa-based winery leapt ahead of the aperitif surge, when they released their first expression of sweet vermouth crafted with their own farm-grown botanicals. Now on their eighth edition, Matthiasson's farmhouse vermouth continues to use a base wine blend of Flora (a natural cross between Semillon and Gewürztraminer), Viognier and Muscat of Alexandria, that's infused with homegrown ingredients including blood oranges, sour cherries, coriander seed, cardoons and foraged wormwood for a perfect balance of dried fruit notes, savory herbs and warm spice. Mastrogiannis Distillery & Winery This Greek-American distillery and winery, based out of North Bend, Washington, crafts a rosé vermouth from a Syrah-base that's fortified with their housemade Baton brandy. Mastrogiannis uses a cold-soak technique over a five month period to allow for the gentle maceration of botanicals like mission and golden figs, wormwood, cocoa nibs, cinnamon and wild cherry bark. The vermouth is sweetened with Washington wildflower honey but it's still light and refreshing. Trinchero Family Estates The modern generation of the Trinchero family pays homage to the estates' founder, Mario Trinchero, who immigrated to New York City from Piedmont, Italy—vermouth's native—with their Trincheri Vermouth. Launched in 2019, the dry and sweet ( rosso ) vermouths are based on the Trinchero family's original recipes that trace back to the 1890s. Both expressions are produced with fruit from the family-owned vineyards in St. Helena; the dry vermouth is built on a base of French Colombard grapes and the rosso from Barbera and Chardonnay. Flying Fox Vineyard In 2017, this Afton, Virginia-based winery debuted their first vermouth as a way to expand their portfolio from eight premium wines. They've since released an entire range of vermouth with a fall, spring, summer and winter expression. Each style features notes of their respective season's flavors — fresh ginger and orange peel for fall; strawberry and rhubarb for spring; peaches and grapefruit for summer; pomegranate and cardamom for winter — fortified with neutral grape brandy.

Appassionata Estate to Host Opening Weekend of the 10th Annual Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival

Celebrating a decade of music, wine, and community in Oregon wine country NEWBERG, Ore., June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Appassionata Estate is proud to welcome back the Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival for its 10th anniversary season, hosting the Festival's opening weekend concert on Saturday, August 2, followed by a second concert on Sunday, August 3. As a founding venue partner since the Festival's inaugural season, Appassionata continues to offer its dramatic underground barrel caves as one of the Festival's beloved and acoustically rich spaces. This milestone year brings with it a performance that is both intimate and transcendent, featuring this season's composer-in-residence, Akshaya Avril Tucker, whose works for strings draw deeply from South Asian music and dance traditions. Guests will have the unique opportunity to engage with Tucker and the musicians in the space between performance and conversation—a hallmark of the festival's commitment to connection and contemporary creativity. Rooted in the belief that wine, like music, is a form of artistic expression, Appassionata Estate was founded to honor the nuance, structure, and slow, deliberate beauty that define both disciplines. The winery was named after Beethoven's dynamic "Appassionata" Piano Sonata, and each of the three Pinot Noir bears a movement name—Allegro, Andante con Moto, Fortissimo—evoking the emotion and rhythm captured in every bottle. For Appassionata, the partnership with the Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival is not simply a collaboration, but a harmonious embodiment of the winery's creative philosophy. "Hosting this concert each year is a highlight of our events calendar," said Tim Malone, Head Winemaker at Appassionata Estate. "It's a deeply sensory experience, one that lingers long after the final note. There's a kind of magic in these evenings that resonates with why we make wine in the first place. Wine has brought people together for centuries, just like music, so we find a natural harmony blending our art of wine with the art of chamber music." Guests are invited to extend the evening's celebration with an optional After Party Dinner, held on the Appassionata terrace surrounded by scenic views of the Willamette Valley. The casual dinner features a seasonal, locally sourced menu, offering the rare chance to dine alongside the musicians and composer in a relaxed, joyful setting. Dinner tickets can be purchased in the Appassionata Estate tasting room, following the Concert. The 2025 Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival will continue throughout the month at the following venues: August 9 & 10 – Sokol Blosser Winery (Dayton, OR) August 16 & 17 – Archery Summit Winery (Dayton, OR) Each performance celebrates the intersection of world-class music and Oregon's vibrant wine culture, showcasing new compositions alongside classical masterworks in venues that elevate the experience beyond the concert hall. The World's Best Pinot Noir From The 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards

Selection of Pinot noir red wine. getty Ten Pinot noir wines, from around the globe, won top honors as the world's best still Pinot noir wines at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards. Two of the entries took Best in Show honors, and eight other wines won Platinum medals. All ten wines had identical scores of 97/100 points and are in 750 ml bottles. Indicated prices are based on the average retail cost, as reported by Wine Searcher. Below is a brief description and tasting notes on each wine. A prestigious Grand Cru bottling from the historic Hospices de Beaune auction. It's crafted by Albert Bichot — known for elegance and terroir expression. The wine is a deep garnet, featuring aromas of wild raspberry, black cherry, and a subtle hint of forest floor. The palate is layered and complex, showcasing ripe red berries, fine-grained tannins, hints of spice, and the mineral backbone typical of Clos de la Roche. Silky yet powerful, with a long, perfumed finish. The DWWA Tasting Panel described the wine as 'dark, indeed almost opaque in color, with a dense, tapestry-like weave of beguiling fruits. The palate is deep, searching, and sumptuously fruited, too, with a rich inner glow that sensitive oak handling is shaping for the future. Best, if possible, to wait most of a decade to enjoy this bottle at its best; nonetheless, the tannins are soft and plush enough to make early drinking over the next year or two a possibility here.' Craggy Range, one of New Zealand's premier wine producers, showcases Martinborough's classic, silky, savory Pinot style. The wine has a bright ruby hue featuring aromas of red cherry, plum skin, earth, and herbs. On the palate, its bright acidity supports a palate of fragrant strawberries, subtle oak toast, and dried thyme. Smooth tannins and a hint of peppery spice culminate in a fresh, elegant finish. The DWWA tasting Panel described the wine as 'an uncompromisingly dark wine that plays to New Zealand's strengths in terms of purity and vivacity of fruit: raspberry, cherry, and plum come streaming from the glass, and the fine meshing of fruit and oak in this wine adds to its luster and appeal. In the mouth, the wine is both long and broad but not in any way clumsy, and the fruit flavors (raspberry to the fore again) are hypnotic. Svelte tannins are barely palpable, so there's no textural barrier to entry.' Platinum Medal Pinot Noir Wines Bay of Fires, Pinot Noir, Tasmania, Australia 2023 $30 Tasmania's cool climate yields Bay of Fires' signature bright, aromatic Pinot noir. Tasmania is rapidly becoming Australia's premier Pinot noir-producing region for both still and sparkling wines. The wine is a pale ruby, featuring notes of cranberry, rose petal, and baking spice on the nose. The palate showcases lively red berry fruit, with crisp acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins. Notes of rhubarb and subtle oak blend into a clean, lingering finish with a hint of minerality. France, Bourgogne, Burgundy, The Climats terroirs of Burgundy UNESCO World Heritage Site, Clos de Vougeot castle, vineyard getty Domaine Jean Monnier & Fils, Clos De Citeaux, Pommard 1er Cru, Burgundy, France 2022 $68 A classic Pommard Premier Cru, robust and structured yet elegant. Monnier & Fils excel at showcasing the classic Côte de Beaune terroir. The wine is a deep cherry red featuring aromas of black cherry, violets, and damp earth. The palate reveals concentrated dark berry fruit, firm yet polished tannins, and hints of mocha and clove—a well-built wine with impressive length and aging potential. Domaine Saint Remy, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru Hengst, Alsace, France 2022 An uncommon Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Alsace, highlighting ripe fruit and finesse. Pinot noir is the only red varietal allowed in Alsace. A warming climate is increasingly making Alsatian Pinot noir a standout offering. The wine is a bright ruby, featuring aromas of strawberry jam, rose petals, and gentle spice. It's silky on the palate, showcasing red currant, hints of licorice, and a touch of smoky oak. The brisk acidity complements ripe red berry fruit, resulting in a long and elegant finish. Domaine Evenstad, Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru, Burgundy, France 2022 Domaine Evenstad's elegant take on Chambolle is refined, floral, and silky. Evenstad is the first Willamette Valley producer to expand to Burgundy. According to the DWWA Tasting Panel, the wine is a very light ruby featuring aromatic notes of cherry blossom, raspberry, and damp earth. The palate showcases delicate layers of red fruit, fine, well-ripened, and supple tannins, along with subtle savory and spicy notes. It's light but persistent, with a velvety, mineral-laced finish. Albert Bichot, Domaine Du Clos Frantin, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy, France 2023 $282 A storied Grand Cru from the legendary Clos de Vougeot, vinified by Albert Bichot's renowned Clos Frantin estate. The wine is a dark ruby featuring an intense bouquet of blackberry, cherry liqueur, and cedar. It's robust on the palate, showcasing black cherry, cocoa, and earthy truffle notes, with a firm tannic backbone and brisk acidity. The finish is long with a layered complexity and lingering red fruit notes. Fritz Wassmer, Roter Berg Kenzingen Spätburgunder, Baden, Germany 2022 An excellent German Pinot noir (Spätburgunder) from the Baden region. It's ripe, precise, and elegant with the delicate finesse typical of top-rated German Pinot noir. The wine is a light ruby, featuring aromas of red currant, wild strawberry, and subtle vanilla notes. The palate showcases succulent, ripe red fruit flavors, silky tannins, and a touch of spice. A brisk acidity and subtle minerality result in a refreshing, clean finish with lingering notes of red fruit. Anempty wine glass on top of freshly harvested pinot noir grapes in a bin getty McArthur Ridge, Southern Tor Pinot Noir, Alexandra Basin, Central Otago, New Zealand 2023 $30 A bold, robust Central Otago Pinot, reflecting the region's classic style of rich fruit and brisk acidity. The wine is a deep purple-ruby showcasing fruity aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, and hints of dried herbs on the nose. The palate is robust and aromatic, showcasing dark berries, fine-grained, well-ripened tannins, and a touch of mocha. A long, fruit-driven finish complements the brisk, well-balanced acidity. Domaine Serene, Yamhill Cuvée Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon, United States 2022 $55 Domaine Serene is a benchmark Oregon producer acclaimed for its polished Pinot Noir and Chardonnay bottlings. Yamhill Cuvée highlights the best lots from estate vineyards across Yamhill County in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The wine is expressive and aromatic on the nose, featuring aromas of black cherry, rose petal, and baking spice. It's medium-bodied on the palate, with a silky texture that showcases layered red fruit notes and subtle oak nuances. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of red fruit. These ten Pinot noir wines were acclaimed as the world's best at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards. Although dominated by French producers, the winners feature wineries spanning the globe: from Alsace to Australia and from Oregon to New Zealand. If you are passionate about Pinot noir, you owe it to yourself to try these wines, especially since so many of them are very reasonably priced.
