New FIA Guidelines Suggest Max Verstappen Should Have Been Banned From Racing

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Red Bull Racing Formula One driver Max Verstappen looks like he escaped a race disqualification for the incident involving George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix. This was highlighted after the FIA released the stewards' guidelines, released in a bid to encourage transparency. The stewards' guidelines document is meant to educate fans on how they hand out penalties to drivers and teams for offenses committed during race weekends. It highlights the steward's decision-making process, which involves weighing the nature of the incident and levying an appropriate punishment based on the magnitude, intent, and consequences of the incident. However, the document has shed light on the punishment levied on Verstappen for crashing into Russell in the last stage of the Spanish Grand Prix. A late-race safety car forced Red Bull to fit Verstappen's RB21 with hard tires while rival cars ran on medium Pirellis. MoreThe race restart saw Verstappen struggle in a battle for third place with Charles Leclerc as his car struggled for traction. At the end of Turn 1, Russell tried to get past him for the fourth spot. Sensing a collision, Verstappen drove off into the run-off area and rejoined the track in front of Russell. Fearing an incoming penalty for overtaking off the racetrack, Red Bull instructed Verstappen to hand P4 to Russell, which he did under frustration. But before this, Verstappen crashed into Russell as the Briton went for the overtake. The stewards handed the Red Bull driver a ten-second penalty and added three points to his super license. That brought Verstappen's super license points tally to 11, leaving him one short of a potential race ban. The four-time world champion admitted after the race that he made the move on Russell out of frustration, which confirms the deliberate nature of the incident. The stewards' guidelines released by the FIA today suggest that four penalty points should have been added to Verstappen's super license. The punishment for "Causing a collision with apparent deliberate or reckless intent" is a "10 Stop and go, or any time penalty exceeding 30 seconds (or grid place penalty if the driver failed to finish the race)." In addition, four penalty points are added to the driver's super license. Adding four points to Verstappen's super license would have banned him from participating in the following race in Canada. While the reason for issuing three penalty points to the Red Bull driver remains unclear, it highlights that the punishment levied is not in line with the rules mentioned in the stewards' guidelines. Now, it remains to be seen if the FIA will comment on the matter.

Verstappen is the driver of this generation: Coulthard

David Coulthard CHENNAI: The Formula One season is slowly beginning to heat up. Reigning champion Max Verstappen, known for his dominant early starts in recent years, has had a surprisingly slow beginning this time. With just two wins from seven races, the Red Bull driver has not quite hit his usual stride. But in Imola last week, the 27-year-old reminded everyone of his prowess, pulling off a crucial victory that placed him 22 points behind leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren. Former F1 driver David Coulthard , who had finished on the podium 62 times, heaped praise on Verstappen for his Imola performance. 'Verstappen has been phenomenal and he is the driver of this generation. The way he seized control of the race in Imola was the confirmation as to why he is the world champion,' Coulthard said during an interaction facilitated by FanCode. 'The thing that may help Max is the fact that McLaren are taking points off each other in terms of the drivers' championship. But in the end, I think that unless there is a major change in the performance of the cars, McLaren have the upper hand and therefore it is for those two drivers to slug it out. And so far, you have got to say it is an advantage for Oscar.' Of the 131 points Red Bull have secured as a team, 124 have come from Verstappen. While Verstappen is third in the individual standings, Piastri (146) and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris (133) occupy the first and second spots respectively. Oscar, in particular, has stood out, having won three successive races prior to Imola. 'Oscar has improved his performance in qualifying from last year. He has understood how to make the Pirellis (tyre) work, and how to exploit the car in qualifying. He is using his experience. Mentor Mark Webber is helping Piastri as he knows how to manage the pace of a season and a Grand Prix. Oscar is being guided well and he has been impressive. I am surprised that Lando has not looked as settled because he is mature enough.' 'Ferrari an upgrade away from dominance' After pre-season testing in Bahrain, it looked like Ferrari would have a good season with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton. But they have not looked at their best with Charles Leclerc yet to get going. In Imola, Hamilton finished fourth after starting 12th and had a good race overall. 'I guess there is no bigger pressure or expectation than on the Ferrari team as it is the most famous name in Formula One since the beginning. Ferrari had made headway last year, they seem to be stronger in some ways. This year so far, they have shown some flashes with Lewis winning in Shanghai (sprint) and then the very strong pace of the car in Imola. They are an upgrade away from delivering dominant performances and have to figure out how to get other things sorted as well. Coulthard hails Piastri, backs him to clinch drivers' crown this year

Former Formula One driver and TV commentator David Coulthard praised Oscar Piastri and backed the Australian for this year's driver's title. Piastri, driving for McLaren, has won four out of the seven races and is leading the championship by 13 points ahead of teammate Lando Norris. 'McLaren and especially Oscar Piastri have been very impressive. It looked like Lando had the upper hand over him last year, but Oscar, aided by my old teammate Mark Webber (Piastri's manager), is the one who stepped up the most from last year,' said Coulthard ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. 'I think that unless there's a major change in the performance of the cars, McLaren has the upper hand, and therefore, it's for those two drivers to slug it out. And so far, it's advantage, Oscar.' The 13-time Grand Prix winner also hailed Piastri's progress in improving his qualifying performance. 'Oscar was a little bit, tenth or so away on average in qualifying. That tenth is a huge amount in this sport. And he's understood, I guess, a combination of how to make the Pirellis work and exploit the car's performance in qualifying,' he added. While Piastri and Norris are fighting it out, reigning champion Max Verstappen is not far off, just eight points further adrift in third in the standings. The Dutchman showed how dangerous he can still be in a car that is not as quick as McLaren when he snatched the lead from Piastri on the opening lap in Imola last weekend and won the race. 'Max, of course, has been phenomenal, and, you know, how he seized control of the race in Imola for me was confirmation of why he is the world champion. I think he is the driver of this generation right now,' remarked Coulthard. (FanCode is the official broadcaster for F1 in India)
