CHENNAI: The Formula One season is slowly beginning to heat up. Reigning champion Max Verstappen, known for his dominant early starts in recent years, has had a surprisingly slow beginning this time.
With just two wins from seven races, the Red Bull driver has not quite hit his usual stride.
But in Imola last week, the 27-year-old reminded everyone of his prowess, pulling off a crucial victory that placed him 22 points behind leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren. Former F1 driver
David Coulthard
, who had finished on the podium 62 times, heaped praise on Verstappen for his Imola performance. 'Verstappen has been phenomenal and he is the driver of this generation.
The way he seized control of the race in Imola was the confirmation as to why he is the world champion,' Coulthard said during an interaction facilitated by FanCode.
'The thing that may help Max is the fact that McLaren are taking points off each other in terms of the drivers' championship. But in the end, I think that unless there is a major change in the performance of the cars, McLaren have the upper hand and therefore it is for those two drivers to slug it out.
And so far, you have got to say it is an advantage for Oscar.'
Of the 131 points Red Bull have secured as a team, 124 have come from Verstappen. While Verstappen is third in the individual standings, Piastri (146) and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris (133) occupy the first and second spots respectively. Oscar, in particular, has stood out, having won three successive races prior to Imola.
'Oscar has improved his performance in qualifying from last year. He has understood how to make the Pirellis (tyre) work, and how to exploit the car in qualifying. He is using his experience. Mentor
Mark Webber
is helping Piastri as he knows how to manage the pace of a season and a Grand Prix.
Oscar is being guided well and he has been impressive. I am surprised that Lando has not looked as settled because he is mature enough.'
'Ferrari an upgrade away from dominance'
After pre-season testing in Bahrain, it looked like Ferrari would have a good season with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton. But they have not looked at their best with Charles Leclerc yet to get going. In Imola, Hamilton finished fourth after starting 12th and had a good race overall.
'I guess there is no bigger pressure or expectation than on the Ferrari team as it is the most famous name in Formula One since the beginning. Ferrari had made headway last year, they seem to be stronger in some ways. This year so far, they have shown some flashes with Lewis winning in Shanghai (sprint) and then the very strong pace of the car in Imola. They are an upgrade away from delivering dominant performances and have to figure out how to get other things sorted as well.

Rishabh Pant's doctor comments on ‘unnecessary' somersaults, calls him extremely lucky to be alive after car accident

Rishabh Pant was seen doing somersaults in recent times to celebrate his century. While many called it 'Rishabh being Rishabh', many fans were worried because of his history of a near-fatal car accident. Rishabh Pant did a somersault after his IPL century this year as the LSG captain. In the 1st Test against England, Pant scored a century in each innings. He was seen doing the somesault again on the British soil. He later spoke to Cheteshwar Pujara about his viral somersault celebration. He said he had three ideas, including 'let the bat do the talking'. However, he chose the somersault as it was personal. Pant was trained in gymnastics at school and said he could do it anytime. 'Even if you wake me up in the middle of the night, I can do a somersault,' Pant said. Rishabh added, after his accident, he had worked hard to regain the skill. He again did a somersault Now, the doctor who saved him has spoken about it. He said Rishabh was 'extremely lucky to be alive'. 'Rishabh trained as a gymnast. Although he looks large, he is quite agile, and he does have a lot of flexibility,' Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala told The Telegraph. 'And, that's why he's been doing those somersaults of late. 'It's a well-practised and perfected move – unnecessary though!' he added. Dr Pardiwala says Pant now values life more and is very motivated. Earlier, Pant focused more on cricket skills than fitness. But, after the accident, he started working harder on his fitness and recovery. Rishabh Pant returned to cricket nearly four months earlier than expected after his serious car accident. Doctors had told him full recovery might take 18 months, but he played in the IPL after 14 months. Pant received a standing ovation and impressed everyone by scoring well and keeping wickets in every match. Later, he hit a century in a Test against Bangladesh. Rishabh Pant survived a major car crash on December 30, 2022, while driving from Delhi to Roorkee. His car overturned, skidded 200 metres, hit a divider and caught fire. Pant escaped through a broken window with the help of two bystanders but suffered serious injuries to his head, back, legs and feet. His right knee was badly dislocated, and large areas of skin were scraped off. Doctors said he was fortunate his blood vessels were not damaged, or he could've lost his leg. In Mumbai, surgeon Dr Pardiwala performed major surgery to reconstruct Pant's knee. For weeks, Pant couldn't brush his teeth or hold a glass due to swelling and skin loss. He needed crutches to walk for four months.

Deepika Padukone expresses admiration for Brad Pitt after F1 movie release

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 29 (ANI): Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has publicly expressed her admiration for Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt following the release of his highly anticipated racing film, 'F1.' The actress took to her official Instagram account on Sunday to express her excitement over Brad Pitt's performance in the film. Posting a cheeky tribute on her Instagram stories, Deepika wrote, "Brad Pitt. That's it, that's the post. IYKYK." Since its international release on June 27, 'F1' has garnered widespread praise from both audiences and critics. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, best known for his work on 'Top Gun: Maverick', the film tells the story of Sonny Hayes, a veteran Formula One driver played by Brad Pitt, who makes a comeback to the sport after a 30-year hiatus. The movie is produced in collaboration with Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton, ensuring a high degree of authenticity in the racing world depicted on-screen. The excitement surrounding the movie reached new heights during its celebrity-packed premiere in London, which saw the presence of superstars such as Tom Cruise. 'F1' has also received praise for its all-star ensemble cast, including Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, and others. In the film, Pitt's character, Sonny Hayes, is brought back into the world of Formula One by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (played by Javier Bardem), who now owns a struggling F1 team. As Sonny attempts to help the team make a comeback, he faces challenges both on and off the track, including reconciling with his past. The film's plot revolves around Sonny Hayes, who was once a talented and promising driver before a severe accident ended his career. Decades later, he is convinced to return to the sport by Cervantes, who seeks to revive his failing team. As Sonny works alongside the young and ambitious driver Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), he must overcome his personal demons and confront the rapidly changing world of Formula 1. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Lewis Hamilton, 'F1' also features a powerful soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer, blending electronic and orchestral sounds to capture the high-octane nature of the sport. The soundtrack includes tracks by artists like Ed Sheeran, ROSÉ, and RAYE. (ANI)
