Vitthalapur beckons faithful from across state for Ashadhi Ekadashi
Bicholim: The Shri Vitthal Rakhumai Satyabhama Temple at Vitthalapur, Sanquelim, is set to celebrate Ashadhi Ekadashi on Sunday. Temple purohit Ramapati Pitre said the shrine's history spans more than 550 years, and the celebration attracts devotees from across the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Before this temple was established, a miracle had occurred, Pitre said. A pious member of the Rane family was on the Pandharpur Vari. 'It is said that after he offered prayers to Lord Vitthal at Pandharpur, the idols of the deities Vitthal, Rakhumai, and Satyabhama fell into his lap,' Pitre said. 'These very idols were brought to Vitthalapur in Sanquelim by some devotees and were installed at a place called Pandharini, 3-4km from this temple.' Since the original site was in a dense forest, devotees faced hardships in approaching the idols to pay obeisance. 'Around that time, a businessman called Porob had a vision that his ship out on the sea would sink. Praying for his ship's safety, he vowed to construct a temple of Lord Vitthal at Vitthalapur,' Pitre said. 'His ship returned safely. He then went on to build a wooden temple. That structure deteriorated over time.' Pitre explained that eventually, a daughter from the Rane family married into the Shinde family of Gwalior, and constructed the temple that stands today. The priest said that the temple's idols are similar to those at Pandharpur. Besides, the temples of Lords Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Maruti, and Goddess Bhagwati make the location a Panchayatan Devasthan, a sanctified home to five deities. The Ashadhi Ekadashi festival concludes on the day of Trayodashi during which the Gopal Kalo or Chikhal Kalo festival is celebrated on the banks of the Valvonti river. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This celebration draws droves of children. During this festival, devotees are served ayurvedic juice in the form of tirtha, which is believed to be helpful in curing some diseases. As festivities along the river approach, Mayem MLA Premendra Shet said the banks of the Valvanti will get a new look at the cost of Rs 2 crore, under the aegis of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation. He said work will begin after the rains in two phases. For now, Ashadhi Ekadashi has been celebrated on the premises of Dr BK Hedgewar Vidhyamandir, Karapur-Tisk, with pomp and fervour. As many as 600 students went on a walking pilgrimage from the school to Lord Vitthal temple. Students of govt primary school at Maulingem also undertook the pilgrimage.

Who would the Vikings select if they could go back and re-do the Lewis Cine pick?
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's tenure as Minnesota Vikings general manager got off to a rough start on the first night of the 2022 NFL Draft. He traded down from pick 12 to pick 32 to select Georgia safety Lewis Cine. Unfortunately, Cine never made an impact in Minnesota. A compound fracture in his leg prematurely ended his rookie season. He only played ten defensive snaps in two seasons before being released before the 2024 season. Who should the Vikings have taken instead? PFF compiled a list, re-drafting each team's worst draft pick from the past five years. Cine was the obvious choice for the Vikings. In this re-draft, PFF has the Vikings select safety Jalen Pitre, who was originally selected 37th overall by the Houston Texans. In the three years since getting drafted, Cine has played in just 11 games and has one career tackle. He's currently on the Philadelphia Eagles' roster and will be fighting to make the team during training camp. New Pick: S Jalen Pitre (originally 37th by the Houston Texans) Meanwhile, Pitre was drafted just five spots later and has become a fixture of the Texans defense. He's managed to rack up six interceptions, 21 passes defended and nearly 300 total tackles, earning a three-year, $39 million contract extension during the 2024 offseason. Of course, the obvious decision now would be not even to bother trading down and instead select Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton. The Ravens selected him 14th overall, and Hamilton has lived up to the hype, receiving two Pro Bowl nods and being chosen as a First-Team All-Pro in 2024. The Cine pick still stings in Minnesota and sets the narrative about Adofo-Mensah's ability to draft. If he had to do it again, the GM would be wise to take either Hamilton at 12 or Pitre later in the round.

Thieves are targeting these luxury truck models in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield is near the top of the list when it comes to car thefts in the country, and now police are sounding the alarm that luxury pickup trucks are getting ripped off. An undercover BPD officer says thieves are using auto diagnostic tools to start the trucks and disconnect OnStar systems so the trucks can't be tracked. They're even punching through the glass to open the door to bypass the push button start. Four people arrested on suspicion of stealing multiple Arvin Public Works trucks: Arvin PD 'The police department said that they're an organized ring and they're coming to Kern County to steal trucks to fill their orders,' Chief Operating Officer John Pitre with the Motor City Auto Center said. Over the last two months, there's been a surge of high-end truck thefts targeting 2018 and 2023 GMC Sierra half-ton and three-quarter ton pickups with the AT4 or Denali trims. 'Exotic suspension systems, wheels and tires, big brakes, high-power engines, leather interiors. I don't really think they're going after these trucks for a particular feature. I think they're looking for the entire truck,' Pitre said. Pitre said if you own one of the trucks, Motor City customer or not, to send an email to help@ or call 661-559-9595 to protect your pickup. 'We have a way to catalog those vehicles in such a way that if they are stolen, we can recover them,' he said. Bakersfield ranks 2nd in metro areas with highest car thefts in 2022 study Police say truck thefts are happening mostly along the Panama Lane and Buena Vista Road corridors. Brock Butler's GMC Heavy Duty 2500 truck got broken into. 'They ripped my deck out and messed with the whole brain of my truck. They popped my key cylinder and got right in the door,' he said. Brock Butler builds pools. It took three men five hours to dig a hole while their heavy duty pickups are out in the open. But, Butler has a hack. 'If you put an aftermarket handle that doesn't have a key cylinder on it, that's worked for me,' he said. California led the country in total vehicle thefts per capita last year. Bakersfield was ranked the third on the list for stolen vehicles in 2024, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Lock your vehicle and park it in the garage, behind a secure fence or box it in. Add a GPS tracker so authorities can find your vehicle faster if it gets stolen. Police say the easiest way to protect your vehicle is to disconnect your battery. That way thieves can't even start your pickup. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Louisiana DA seeks death penalty for Breaux in mid-2026 trial
ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) — St. Landry Parish District Attorney seeks death penalty after Davieontray Breaux was indicted again for first degree murder and other charges earlier today. Davieontray Breaux indicted again for two counts of first degree murder and also charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder, Chad Pitre, St. Landry District Attorney, said. In June 2022, a St. Landry Grand Jury indicted Breaux along with Felton Martin James and Holly Roberts with two counts of first-degree murder for the shooting of a four year old girl and Alton Thomas of Opelousas. In additional, these three individuals are charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder of three other juveniles involved in the shooting, Pitre said. Earlier in May, attorneys appealed to the Louisiana supreme court and argued that it would be improper for Mr. Breaux to have to defend against the death penalty charges and the attempted first-degree murders in the same trial. On May 9, the Louisiana Supreme Court agreed with the capital defense attorneys and revoked the state's indictment against due to the Louisiana Constitution does not allow a district attorney to join capital offenses with noncapital offenses in a single indictment and be trialed together, Pitre said. Sade Robinson homicide; lasting legacy, from tragedy to advocacy
The Brief Prosecutors say 19-year-old Sade Robinson was found killed and mutilated after a first date in April 2024. The Sojourner Family Peace Center reports there have been nine domestic violence homicides in Milwaukee this year. Sade's Voice Foundation will donate to causes that align with their mission and offer scholarships for self-defense courses for young women. MILWAUKEE - Hope, anxiety, excitement and maybe some curiosity or fear of the unknown – all emotions of the dating culture. But there could also be concern about safety. Local perspective It's what Sade Robinson's loved ones live with daily. Prosecutors say the 19-year-old was found killed and mutilated after a first date in April 2024. Carmen Pitre is president and CEO of the Sojourner Family Peace Center in Milwaukee. The nonprofit provides domestic violence prevention and intervention services. "We should live in communities where you can go on a date without concern that this will happen to you or someone you love," said Pitre. "It was horrendous to have had what happened to her, where she was dismembered, and awful for the family and have to day-by-day wonder: where is she?" FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android FOX6 News: Is dating abuse more common than we think? Pitre: Any of us are eligible to be hurt in relationships. With Sade, she was hurt in the intimacy of a relationship or, while it may not have met the statutory definition for us, what matters is she was in a relationship soon to be or had been in communication in an intimate way with this person. By the numbers The Sojourner Family Peace Center reports there have been nine domestic violence homicides in Milwaukee this year. In 2024, there were at least 34 domestic violence homicides; Robinson was among the list of victims. Data shows 39 cases in 2023, 49 in 2022, 41 in 2021 and 51 in 2020. The numbers include violent crimes between several relationship types, like parent/child, spouses and romantic partners. "We have a high level, or lethal, violence in Milwaukee," Pitre added. "It's gone down in recent years, but we still have far too much levels of violence that means people being strangled, people being set on fire, houses being sat on fire, guns, knives being used in intimate relationships so we're concerned about that." What's next Sentiments shared by Robinson's mother, Sheena Scarbrough, prompted her to start the Sade's Voice Foundation. "For all of the other missing and murdered Black, indigenous people of color," said Scarbrough. Scarbrough said the nonprofit will donate to organizations and causes that align with their mission as well as host annual back-to-school drives and offer scholarships for self-defense courses for young women. "It is her voice, her legacy to honor and carry what she was about," Scarbrough said. "She was a light worker, and she has saved so many young women and individuals. My baby is a hero." So far, the foundation has raised over $39,000 with the help of community partners. A portion of those funds will go towards a permanent memorial at Warnimont Park, where one of Sade's body parts was first discovered. "It's going to be bright pink and there going to understand once this place was a beautiful place to be. This is going to be the home of a memorial for somebody that was so beautiful," said cousin Keke. A reminder to live and love freely while remaining vigilant.
