Google Pixel 10 Pro could get a much-needed display upgrade — but the base model's getting left out

A new report has indicated that the Google Pixel 10 Pro series screens will offer improved PWM dimming compared to the basic Pixel 10 — both good and bad news for potential users' eyes. According to a recent report by Android Authority, Google may use displays with 480Hz Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming for the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL. For comparison, the Pixel 9 Pro is capped at 240Hz. If you've not heard of the term before, PWM refers to how the backlight or pixels of a mobile device's display rapidly turn on and off at different rates to increase or decrease its perceived brightness. You'll never notice this flickering with the naked eye, but at lower brightness levels, when there are larger gaps between the pixels being lit, using the screen can cause eyestrain and headaches in some people, as our friends at Android Central have covered. Google looking to increase the PWM frequency on the Pixel 10 Pro series would go a long way to counter this risk, and also match the 480Hz seen on the Galaxy S25 and the iPhone 16 series. However, the rumor suggests that the base model will stick with 240Hz like previous Pixels, leaving the issue unaddressed for users who don't want or can't afford a more expensive Pro Pixel. This rumor follows others that appear to indicate that Google could limit advancements coming to the new Pixels to the Pro models only. For instance, we recently heard that Google might not incorporate a vapor chamber into the base Pixel 10, but will do so on the Pros. That same leak also claims that the Pixel 10 won't support Wi-Fi 7, which is a confusing omission as it is available on the Pixel 9. On the plus side, there are indications that the Google Pixel 10 will finally feature a telephoto camera, just like the pro models. However, it still appears that some of the features reportedly coming for the Pixel 10 Pro, like the Ultra Res Zoom or Ultra Stable video recording features, won't make an appearance on the vanilla Pixel 10. We have a lot of questions about the next range of Google Pixel phones. While we'd expect the Pixel 10 Pro to find a place as one of the best phones on the market, there's a chance that the base Pixel 10 will simply fall by the wayside when the phone releases. While we don't have a set date yet, we'd expect this to happen around August, which would match the release of the Pixel 9 series. The best Android 16 features that are already live in One UI 8 beta

Joe Maring / Android Authority Android 16 is now available for Pixel phones, although some of the more exciting features won't be ready until the release of Android 16 QPR1 later this year. On the other hand, Samsung's One UI 8 beta, which is based on Android 16, has already surprised us by going live faster than expected and packing some fundamental features that Pixels don't have yet and won't have until QPR1. Of course, One UI 8 beta also has all of Samsung's apps and design language, as well as any new features Samsung develops for itself, but what I'm interested in here are the new Android 16-based features that I was able to try out. Of all the Android 16 features that Samsung has already implemented in One UI 8, these are my three favorites. Do you think One UI 8 is a good update so far? 278 votes Yeah, I like the changes I'm seeing. 40 % It's OK, but I'm curious to see how it progresses in future betas. 30 % No, I was hoping for more change. 23 % Other (let us know in the comments). 8 % Live Updates With One UI 7, Samsung introduced Live Notifications. Like Apple's Live Activities, Live Notifications make important notifications more accessible. Media controls, ongoing timers, Google Maps directions, and more are shown in a bubble to the left of the selfie camera and integrate with the Now Bar. If Samsung phones already have this feature, why are we discussing it now? Google is adding Live Updates — essentially the same feature — to Android 16, with full functionality expected in the QPR1 update later this year. This is a significant development for Samsung users, as there are relatively few third-party apps that support Samsung's Live Notifications in One UI 7, but app developers should have a greater incentive to support the feature when it's available on Android as a whole and not just Samsung phones. 90:10 split-screen Split-screen multitasking has been a feature of Android for years, and it hasn't changed much since its introduction. OnePlus debuted Open Canvas on the OnePlus Open, a new way of multitasking on a foldable that made a lot more sense than anything else we'd tried. Android 16 is using that as inspiration for the 90:10 split. This allows you to collapse one of the apps, so it only takes up 10% of your screen, giving the other app room to breathe. Tapping the smaller app reverses their positions, so you can swap between them as needed. Ironically, Samsung phones are currently the only Android 16 devices that can use this feature, as Google hasn't included it in the stable Android 16 release for Pixels, nor in the current betas for Android 16 QPR1. Hopefully that'll change soon, as I'd love to use this on my Pixel 9 Pro. Advanced Protection Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority Advanced Protection isn't as flashy or cool as the previous two entries, but it is an important addition to Android 16. It's a collection of features designed to keep your phone and data safe. Some of these security features are new, while others have been present in previous versions of Android and are now grouped under Advanced Protection. Existing features, such as Theft Protection Lock, blocking APK installation, Android Safe Browsing, and more, are all enabled when Advanced Protection is activated. New features include a USB Protection mode that defaults new USB connections to charging only while your phone is locked, automatically restarting your phone if it has been left idle for 72 hours, and more. None of that is as exciting as Live Updates, but I'm glad to see it in Android 16. Many of you reading this probably know not to install a dodgy APK from a random website or how to spot a scam call. Many people, however, don't, and enabling all these features on my grandparents' phones with one toggle, allowing me to worry less about them, is something I welcome. Will this completely resolve the spam and malicious software problems in the world? Of course not, but anything that makes combating them easier is a good thing. Android 16 isn't a huge overhaul of Android, but there are still some cool new features that I'm looking forward to trying when they land. I'm just glad I get to try some of them already in One UI 8 beta, which already feels less rushed and less hacked together than One UI 7 did. What are you looking forward to in Android 16 and One UI 8? Let me know in the comments.

Google Confirms Unstoppable Pixel Update—Tick-Tock For Samsung

Pixels first again — the clock is ticking for others. Pixel comes first. That has just been made clear once again, with Google confirming the release of Android 16 'rolling out first to supported Pixel devices with more phone brands to come later this year.' The clock is now ticking for Samsung. This is the latest foray in Google's mission to narrow the security gap with iPhone, and critically Android 16 brings Advanced Protection Mode, which makes an Android phone more like an iPhone, restricting sideloading along with other safeguards. With this Android 16 release to all supported Pixels, Google says, you can now activate its 'strongest mobile device protection.' This enables 'security features that protect you from online attacks, harmful apps, unsafe websites, scam calls and more. Whether you're a public figure or you just prioritize security, Advanced Protection gives you greater peace of mind that you're protected against the most sophisticated attacks.' Google says 'this is the earliest Android has launched a major release in the last few years, which ensures you get the latest updates as soon as possible on your devices.' Good news for Pixel owners. Less good news for Samsung owners rocking a new Galaxy flagship. There is a relatively short window before those users will expect an upgrade. According to SammyFans, while there's 'confirmation it will arrive earlier than usual, marking a significant change in how Samsung releases software updates,' there's no firm date. 'The company is targeting an ambitious summer 2025 stable release timeline, potentially arriving as early as July, months ahead of its traditional fall update.' Advanced Protection Mode is less a change for Samsung users than Pixel users, given Samsung has already taken steps to restrict risky activity on its devices. But I recommend users enable the setting anyway. It's a single click to be much safer, and it stops inadvertent activity that might see your data (or worse) compromised. Per Engadget, with this Android 16 release Google has also 'tied all of its security features together, so users can now be protected from 'online attacks, harmful apps, unsafe websites, scam calls and more in just a tap'. This includes new scam detection features that were previewed back in May.' All critical given the raft of ongoing attacks. After the nightmare One UI 7 delays — both for beta and stable releases, the expedited One UI 8 (Android 16) beta has landed more favorably, but the stable rollout schedule is all that really matters. Users of Galaxy S22 series and above, covering the last three years, will be especially keen to see upgrades beyond the S25 and S24, and this year's new foldables, which should run One UI 8 out of the box from next month.
