Brokerages are likely to slash yields on cash. These firms are still offering solid rates

Yields brokerage firms are willing to pay on idle cash are expected to cool in the second half of this year, but a few companies are still offering attractive rates for now. The Federal Reserve hasn't made any movement on interest rate cuts since last December, maintaining its target interest rate range at 4.25% to 4.5%. Central bank policymakers are widely expected to stand pat at the conclusion of their July meeting next Wednesday, too. Nevertheless, brokerages have been busy as of late, pulling back their cash sweep rates – the yields they pay on dollars that haven't yet been deployed into investments. Earlier this year, Raymond James Financial trimmed its rates by five to 25 basis points, depending on the amount of cash a client has, according to an analysis by Bank of America. Those with a relationship cash value of less than $250,000 can get 0.15% APY on their idle funds, while the largest accounts – those with $10 million or above in cash balances – can pick up 2.28%. Bank of America expects those rates to continue sliding, particularly once the Fed resumes its cuts. "Currently, the market is pricing in 2-3 cuts this year and an additional 2-3 cuts next year," wrote Craig Siegenthaler, Bank of America, in a recent report. "This implies that we will see much more activity on cash sweep rates over the next 12 months." Falling cash sweep rates encourage investors to put their idle cash to work. Further, lower yields on sweeps dampen the effect Fed rate cuts have on brokers/ net interest margin and net interest income, Siegenthaler said. Higher rates in select places Despite the the shift, a few places are still offering solid yields. For now, eToro offers an annual percentage yield of 3.9% in its High Interest Cash Program . The brokerage earlier this year cut its rate from 4.15%, Bank of America's analysis found. Vanguard's Cash Plus Account is offering a yield of 3.65%, which reflects a 25 basis point cut the firm made earlier this year. The coveted 4% APY, which has become hard to find as brokerages reduce rates, is still out there, too. Robinhood Gold members can earn 4% yields on their uninvested cash , as can clients who have accounts managed by Robinhood Strategies, the firm's investment advisory service. Be aware that brokerage firms can cut their rates at any time, though. Further, these yields aren't enough to keep up with inflation over time. Investors who want to lock in attractive yields – and who don't mind reduced access to their cash – might be better off in a certificate of deposit . Popular Direct offers a 12-month CD with a yield of 4.3%, while Bread Financial has a similar CD with a rate of 4%.

Free iPhone upgrade for MILLIONS due in days – but you'll only get it if you change little-known setting

APPLE is about to roll out a major iPhone upgrade that millions of customers can claim. The new iOS 26 update brings loads of free features to your mobile, but it's technically not out until September – unless you skip the queue. 5 The new iOS 26 update is coming later this year – but you can claim it early Credit: Apple Before Apple hands out iOS 26 to everyone, it'll test the update through a "Public Beta". Back in June, Apple confirmed that this would take place "next month" i.e. July. That means there are just days left for Apple to start dishing out the public beta to anyone who signs up. Apple's iOS 26 makes a huge number of changes to your iPhone, including a major redesign called Liquid Glass. This gives your entire iPhone a glossy (and glassy) new look with translucent icons and menus. But the iOS update also adds some clever new features, including real-time language translation for texting, phone calls, and FaceTime. That means you can talk to someone who doesn't speak the same language as you – and you'll understand each other perfectly. There's also a new Hold Assist feature that will use a robot to wait on calls for you, and then alert you when the customer support person has picked up. As well as that, there's a Call Screening feature that will use a bot to vet unknown callers before they get through to you. The robot voice will answer the phone, then ask the caller who they are and what they want. Apples's big announcements from WWDC with a flurry new features for the gadgets you already own As the caller answers the question, their words will be transcribed on your screen in real-time. That way, you can decide whether to pick up or ignore it. It's an easy way to dodge spam (and potentially scam) calls. GET IOS 26 ON YOUR IPHONE EARLY So you're sold on the new update, but how do you actually get it? The answer for most people is to just wait around until September, when it'll turn up in Settings > General > Software Update. 5 There's a new Liquid Glass look for your iPhone Credit: Apple The exact details haven't been confirmed by Apple, but we've previously predicted the official iOS 26 release date as Monday, September 15. If you want it early, you can sign up to the public beta. Rumours suggest that could arrive as soon as Wednesday, July 23 – but at the very least, Apple has said that it'll be out in July. To join the public beta, just go to Apple's beta website, sign in, and register for it here. If there's a new beta update, that's where you'll be able to claim it. I-CAREFUL But remember: beta tests are meant to be for trialling new software to help Apple squash bugs. For a start, that means that you should think about submitting your thoughts using the built-in Feedback Assistant app, which you'll find on your iPhone. 5 A new real-time translation feature lets you have phone conversations with people who don't speak your language Credit: Apple Secondly, using beta software means that you might experience bugs – and very serious ones. Apple recommends backing up your iPhone before installing the beta so that you don't lose anything. And keep in mind that you might find some features not working properly, or that your battery life is worse than usual, or some other strange problem entirely. Apple has already been testing out iOS 26 on developers so there's a good chance that the beta is running pretty smoothly by this stage – but sadly there's no guarantee it'll be great for you. 5 Call Screening uses a robot voice to vet unknown numbers before they get through to you Credit: Apple So if you have a spare iPhone that'll run the beta, consider using that instead.
