While it does not introduce flashy new features, iOS 18.6 includes critical bug fixes, security patches, and interface tweaks for users in the European Union. iOS 26 is already available in public beta version on eligible iPhone models, offering a preview of Liquid Glass UI design and new features. iOS 18.6: What is new According to Apple's release notes, iOS 18.6 addresses a Photos app issue that had prevented some users from sharing their Memory Movies. The update also fixes a security vulnerability that could have allowed 'non-privileged users' to alter restricted network settings, potentially triggering a denial-of-service issue. It also includes other security updates. In addition, the update introduces changes to the app installation experience for EU users, in line with ongoing compliance efforts with the Digital Markets Act. These changes refine the interface for sideloading apps and using third-party app marketplaces. Apple outlined two key updates specific to EU users in iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6: An updated interface for installing alternative app marketplaces from a developer's website. A revised user experience for downloading individual apps directly from a developer's website. These changes are exclusive to users in the European Union and build on Apple's earlier efforts to open up iOS to third-party distribution platforms. iOS 26: What is new Meanwhile, Apple has already made iOS 26 available in public beta. The next-generation update marks a major overhaul to the iPhone experience, headlined by a new "Liquid Glass" design language that brings translucent layers, smooth animations, and redesigned icons across the system. iOS 26 also enhances Apple Intelligence features with smarter in-app suggestions, live translation in Phone and Messages, and new contextual tools under Visual Intelligence. Apps like Messages now support polls, and the revamped Phone app introduces a unified interface. Other additions include a dedicated Apple Games app, which serves as a central hub for tracking games, Browse titles, and accessing Apple Arcade content. The iOS 26 public beta is currently available for iPhone 11 series and newer devices.

Spain competition watchdog expands probe into Apple
Madrid: Spain 's competition watchdog said Tuesday that it had broadened a probe opened last year into the conditions Apple imposes on developers of mobile applications sold on its App Store. The CNMC regulator began the inquiry in July 2024 into possible anti-competitive behaviour by the US tech giant for allegedly imposing "unfair commercial terms" on developers of mobile applications sold through its app marketplace. The CNMC said it had expanded its probe to see "whether Apple may have established a pricing schedule that developers are required to follow in order to distribute their apps in its stores". "This would constitute a restrictive practice of competition among businesses," it added in a statement. Apple said it would continue to work with the antitrust watchdog "to ensure our concerns are fully understood". "We designed the App Store to be a safe and trusted experience for users and a great business opportunity for developers in Spain and around the world," it added. Apple's success is built on a closed ecosystem focused on iPhones and iPads, where it controls all aspects of its platform on the grounds this boosts security and user experience. This approach, however, clashes with European competition regulations .

Apple rolls out option for online buyers in India to video call its offline retailers
New Delhi: Apple has rolled out the option to video call Apple Store retailers on its online store when purchasing a product. India is only the second country after the US to get the feature, following the launch of the online store app earlier this year. The service connects customers with an Apple Store team member via a secure, one-way video call to browse the latest Apple products, discover new features, and learn about Apple's trade-in program, financing options, and more from the comfort of their homes. 'India is a vibrant and dynamic market, and we're thrilled to deepen our connection with customers here through Shop with a Specialist over Video ,' said Karen Rasmussen, Apple's head of Retail Online. While the Specialist will appear on video, customers will remain on audio only. During the session, customers can get tailored, personalised advice, enabling them to compare models and learn more about available purchase options to decide on the product that best suits their needs. The service, offered in English, will support customers on iOS and non-iOS devices. The service is available 10AM to 7PM from Monday to Friday. 'Whether someone lives in a metro city or a smaller town, we're committed to making it easier than ever for them to access the incredible products, services, and support Apple is known for. Our team members are excited to connect with even more customers in India and provide them exceptional service as they learn what Apple products suit their needs," Rasmussen said. The development comes even as Apple doubles down on the India market not just as an export hub, but a fast-growing market for its iPhones and Macs. Apple ranked sixth in Q2 2025 in the Indian smartphone market with the iPhone 16 family accounting for over 55% of its shipments, while the iPhone 15 and 13 continued to drive demand across price tiers, according to Canalys.
