Three injured as retaining wall collapses at Mahal construction site

1 2 N agpur: A retaining wall at a construction site in Mahal's B-Park area collapsed on Saturday morning and left three workers injured, including two operators of heavy machinery. The retaining wall, designed to prevent soil collapse around the deep excavation pit for the basement, gave way, causing debris to trap two workers inside the Poclain excavator cabin. A third worker, a site helper, managed to escape with minor injuries. Now, the buildings adjacent to the construction site are at potential risk, as blocks on the ground level have visible cracks. The incident occurred while the machines were engaged in concreting the basement, as confirmed by officials. A fire official present at the site said the collapse was likely triggered by continuous vibrations from the machinery combined with the impact of recent heavy rains. Immediate rescue efforts were launched by fire brigade teams from Ganjipeth and Cotton Market stations, who successfully freed the trapped workers. All three injured persons were rushed to Mayo Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo Officials on site highlighted the challenges faced in retrieving the two Poclain machines, each valued at approximately Rs80 lakh, which remain trapped under the debris. Fire official Baban Jadhav said, "The site's limited road access is complicating efforts to bring in heavy cranes required for the removal of the equipment." A fire brigade team has been stationed on standby as debris clearance continues to create sufficient space for crane operations. The construction project is a joint initiative between VIPL and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Police officials have recorded statements from the three injured workers and are currently investigating the incident. "We are awaiting a detailed report that will help determine exactly who was at fault. Based on the findings, a case will be registered against the responsible individual or agency under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)," a senior official said. In the aftermath of the collapse, police cleared street vendors who were operating in close proximity to the construction site. Fire officers Nitin Vaidya, Gopal Kaluse, Vilas Ramteke, and senior officer Sayyed Shaukat Ali were on the spot. Anil Gedam, executive engineer of the NMC's Dhantoli Zone, detailed the preventive measures already implemented at the site. "We completed the storing and anchoring of the basement, which involves the safe placement of construction materials and installation of mechanical supports to stabilise retaining walls and prevent soil collapse," he explained. A team of project engineers and structural experts has been deployed on site to thoroughly inspect the area and determine the precise cause of the collapse. While the final report is awaited, the authorities have planned immediate backfilling of the excavation pit as a priority. Additional structural supports will be installed from the bottom to the top of the retaining walls, along with stabilisers to mitigate future risks. Gedam further disclosed concerns about two buildings adjacent to the accident site that now fall within a risk zone due to potential soil instability. One is a single-storey structure, and the other is a three-floor commercial complex. Both areas have been sealed off, and the occupants have been asked to vacate as a precautionary measure.

Chhattisgarh HC seeks affidavits on drain desilting, monsoon readiness, and water supply

RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh High Court has directed the Commissioner, Bilaspur Municipal Corporation, to submit an additional affidavit detailing the progress on desilting and cleaning of 78 drains. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Simultaneously, the Secretary, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Raipur, has been asked to file a personal affidavit addressing monsoon preparedness and water supply issues. These directives were issued during the ongoing hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning civic infrastructure. During the court proceedings, the counsel representing the Bilaspur civic body stated that a recent news report, which highlighted water scarcity despite pipeline installation in a village, pertained to a rural area. This area, the counsel clarified, falls outside the territorial jurisdiction of the Bilaspur Municipal Corporation, and thus, the Corporation is neither the executing nor the supervisory agency for such rural infrastructure projects. Yashwant Singh Thakur, Additional Advocate General for the State, informed the court that the Public Health Engineering Department holds jurisdiction over the area in question. As the PHED was not an initial party to the PIL, the Registry has been instructed to include the Secretary, Public Health Engineering Department, Raipur, as an additional respondent in the petition. The Commissioner, Bilaspur Municipal Corporation, has already filed an affidavit outlining monsoon preparedness measures. The affidavit confirms that 137 drains have been identified within the Corporation's limits. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A comprehensive desilting and cleanliness drive, which began on 1 May 2025, is scheduled to continue until 30 June 2025, to ensure full readiness for the monsoon season. As per the affidavit, 59 drains have been desilted and cleaned, while work is actively progressing on the remaining 78. For this drive, the Corporation has deployed 8 JCBs, 8 mini Poclain machines, and 2 large Poclain excavators. Additionally, 80 labourers have been mobilised for monsoon preparedness. A dedicated Flood Control Room is set to become operational from 15 June, providing round-the-clock response to waterlogging incidents across the city. The Municipal Corporation also clarified that desilting and cleaning operations have commenced with full machinery in Gokane Nala and Yadunandan Nagar Nala. The Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising public health, sanitation, and flood prevention. The High Court has slated the matter for further monitoring and compliance on 18 July 2025.

Gurugram civic body takes action to prevent recurrence of fire incidents at Bandhwari landfill

Gurugram, The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram on Thursday held a meeting with district administration over the recurrence of fire incidents at the Bandhwari landfill site and took steps to prevent it. The Corporation officials informed that earlier there were two methane detectors on the Bandhwari landfill site, which have now been increased to six. These portable detectors have been installed on Poclain machines, the officials said according to an official statement. DC Ajay Kumar said that all necessary precautions should be taken to prevent recurrence of fire incidents at the Bandhwari landfill site. Borewells and storage tanks should be built to supply water at the site to deal with fire, he added. At present, 27 fire extinguishers, 55 fire balls, two water tankers and two sprinkler pumps among others are there at the landfill site. In addition, 26 CCTV cameras have been installed for round the clock monitoring of the site. DC Kumar directed to the official that all precautions should be taken on priority to ensure that such an incident is not repeated at Bandhwari landfill site. He also gave necessary instructions to the officials of Municipal Corporation, Gurugram and Manesar, NHAI, GMDA and Pollution Control Department regarding dust control in the district. He said that there are clear instructions from the Haryana government that the repair and construction of all roads should be completed by June 15. Kumar also directed for mechanized sweeping of roads for dust control and sprinkling of water twice a day on roads under construction. Regarding solid waste management, the DC directed to take action against those violating the rules. "Pollution control is our collective responsibility and there should be no negligence at any level regarding the health of the citizens. Officials take necessary precautions to control incidents of fire in forest areas,' DC Kumar said. Recently, a fire broke out at the Bandhwari landfill site and it took firefighters over 16 hours to douse it. Local residents have said that the repeated fires in the garbage mountains of the landfill have caused more trouble for the people living nearby as the smoke generated from these fires makes them gasp for air.
