Gurugram civic body takes action to prevent recurrence of fire incidents at Bandhwari landfill

Hindustan Times01-05-2025
Gurugram, The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram on Thursday held a meeting with district administration over the recurrence of fire incidents at the Bandhwari landfill site and took steps to prevent it.
The Corporation officials informed that earlier there were two methane detectors on the Bandhwari landfill site, which have now been increased to six.
These portable detectors have been installed on Poclain machines, the officials said according to an official statement.
DC Ajay Kumar said that all necessary precautions should be taken to prevent recurrence of fire incidents at the Bandhwari landfill site.
Borewells and storage tanks should be built to supply water at the site to deal with fire, he added.
At present, 27 fire extinguishers, 55 fire balls, two water tankers and two sprinkler pumps among others are there at the landfill site. In addition, 26 CCTV cameras have been installed for round the clock monitoring of the site.
DC Kumar directed to the official that all precautions should be taken on priority to ensure that such an incident is not repeated at Bandhwari landfill site.
He also gave necessary instructions to the officials of Municipal Corporation, Gurugram and Manesar, NHAI, GMDA and Pollution Control Department regarding dust control in the district.
He said that there are clear instructions from the Haryana government that the repair and construction of all roads should be completed by June 15.
Kumar also directed for mechanized sweeping of roads for dust control and sprinkling of water twice a day on roads under construction.
Regarding solid waste management, the DC directed to take action against those violating the rules.
"Pollution control is our collective responsibility and there should be no negligence at any level regarding the health of the citizens. Officials take necessary precautions to control incidents of fire in forest areas,' DC Kumar said.
Recently, a fire broke out at the Bandhwari landfill site and it took firefighters over 16 hours to douse it.
Local residents have said that the repeated fires in the garbage mountains of the landfill have caused more trouble for the people living nearby as the smoke generated from these fires makes them gasp for air.

Tiruchi Corporation outsources upkeep of Karumandapam crematorium

The Tiruchi Corporation has roped in a private agency for the maintenance and operation of the crematorium at Karumandapam. A Tiruchi-based agency has been awarded the contract of the maintenance and operation of the crematorium, and has been permitted to collect ₹2,500 per cremation and pay ₹100 from this to the Corporation. Under the initiative, the private agency would be responsible for the maintenance and repair of machinery, including cremation chambers, furnace, pollution control device, and chimney. The agency would appoint four persons to run the facility. A senior official said that the civic body would regularly inspect the crematoriums to ensure that they were maintained properly. The crematorium at Karumandapam serves the residents of Viswas Nagar and other neighbourhoods in the city. At least five bodies are cremated daily at the facility, which was opened in 2009. Officials said shortage of manpower at the crematoriums had led to the idea of privatising them. Following complaints that the workers demanded an additional ₹1,000 from the public, the operators had been warned against such a practice. At present, gas-fired crematoriums function at Oyamari, Konakkarai, Ambedkar, Panjapur, Karumandapam, and Ariyamangalam. The maintenance of crematoriums at Konakkarai, Ambedkar, Panjapur, and Ariyamangalam had been outsourced and ₹2,500 was charged per cremation. Similarly, a private agency had been awarded the maintenance and operation contract for the crematorium at Oyamari. However, following opposition from the councillors, the contract had been put on hold. According to sources, on an average, between 12 and 15 bodies are cremated at the facility in Oyamari daily.

Karimnagar: Cable bridge remains ornamental

Karimnagar: The cable bridge built in Karimnagar is in a State of neglect due to lack of proper maintenance. The bridge, which was built at a cost of Rs. 224 crore and opened exactly two years ago, has been in poor condition. The dynamic lights are not functioning for a year and a half making it pitch black at night. The asphalt layer on the cable bridge has come off just a year after it was opened, making it difficult to move on the road. Despite several repairs in two years, the problem has not been resolved. The maintenance of the cable bridge has not been undertaken by the contractor, the Municipal Corporation, SUDA, or government departments, and the project worth crores of rupees has been left in the lurch. It seems that the electricity bill is already pending there for more than three crores As part of the Manair Riverfront Project undertaken to develop Karimnagar City as a tourist hub, the previous government started the construction of a 500-meter-long cable bridge between Karimnagar-Sadashivpalli at a cost of Rs. 184 crore in 2018. A dynamic lighting system was installed at a cost of Rs. 8 crore so that the cable bridge could be seen from a distance of kilometers at night, along with two large screens. This was the main attraction of the cable bridge. On June 21, 2023, the then ministers KTR and Gangula Kamalakar inaugurated this bridge with a bang. After that, cultural programmes were organized on weekends under the name 'Masti'. Due to the poor condition of the road and the lack of lights, the city people stopped coming to the bridge. The bridge has become a haven for boozers. It is noteworthy that no one has taken the responsibility of maintaining the Karimnagar Cable Bridge. It is reported that a private company has taken up the construction work of the bridge on a built and operate, transfer (BOT) basis. It is known that the said company is limited to completing the construction, lighting the dynamic lighting and handing it over to the government. After this, who should take care of the maintenance of the cable bridge? Who is responsible for security on the bridge? Who should ensure that it is clean? There is no clarity on this issue. The R&B department should hand over the bridge maintenance to the Municipal Corporation or SUDA. It is known that the officers of both the departments have not expressed their willingness. Also, due to the traffic island being created at the lower side of the cable bridge without any foresight, vehicles going from there to the Rajiv Road bypass road to Hyderabad are also plying, resulting in frequent accidents and many deaths. Meanwhile, the previous government sanctioned Rs. 500 crore for the construction of a riverfront in the name of Manair Riverfront development works in Karimnagar city within a radius of about four kilometers in connection with the cable bridge. Out of this, the Tourism Department released Rs. 100 crore and the Irrigation Department released Rs. 100 crore. The contractor was negligent and not following the quality standards in the construction work. The bills were paid before the work was even completed. It is known that corruption and irregularities took place in the construction. When check dams were constructed within the riverfront area, they were completely washed away by the rains during the rainy season. Even after the check dams were breached, funds were released for the construction of the riverfront. Even after five years, these works are still not completed. Recently, CPI leader Chada Venkata Reddy met the Chief Minister and appealed to him to conduct a vigilance inquiry into the corruption and irregularities in the Manair riverfront works, the role of the contractor concerned and the role of the previous rulers.

Bairabi–Sairang Line: Railways sourced construction material, workforce from across country, ET Infra

Materials came from multiple states Advt Labour force mobilised nationwide Advt By , ETInfra To connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl to the national railway network, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) drew on material and manpower from several parts of the country, reports. The 52-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹8,000 crore, is now complete and is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Kumar, the project's chief engineer, said most of the construction material was sourced from outside Mizoram.'Crushed stones were brought from Assam, West Bengal and Jharkhand. We purchased sand from Silchar and Guwahati. We sourced reinforcement rods from Kolkata and bent them near the highway as carrying them to the construction site was not possible due to their length. Then, we straightened them for use at the site,' Kumar said.'Small vehicles cannot carry 12-ft-long rods and big vehicles cannot ply on these roads,' he girders used in the project came from Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Kolkata (West Bengal), and Wardha and Ahmednagar (Maharashtra). NFR officials said transporting these to the construction site involved logistical difficulties.'There are two approach roads to Guwahati from Aizawl and both often get closed due to landslides or poor conditions. So, we carried the girders up to Bairabi using the rail network and then took them to the site by making special transportation arrangements,' Kumar explained.'Cranes were dismantled to take them to the site to place these girders on the bridge. A day's work took more than a month to complete due to all these reasons,' he project relied on both skilled and unskilled labourers from West Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and operational, the Bairabi–Sairang line will make Mizoram the fourth northeastern state with its capital linked to the railway grid. The line includes 48 tunnels (12.853 km in total), 55 major and 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine road underbridges. One bridge, numbered 196, rises 104 metres—42 metres taller than Delhi's Qutub railway line was completed in four phases: Bairabi–Hortoki (16.72 km) was commissioned in July 2024; the remaining sections—Hortoki–Kawnpui (9.71 km), Kawnpui–Mualkhang (12.11 km), and Mualkhang–Sairang (12.84 km)—were commissioned in June 2025.
