Officials told to ensure safety and security at EVM strong room
Rangareddy: As Telangana is bracing for gram panchayat elections anytime this year, the officials from Election Commission are on their toes to ensure safety of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) stored at designated places, especially in Rangareddy district. The State Deputy Chief Electoral Officer B Hari Singh along with other senior district level officials have visited EVM strong room located at MRO office Rajendranagar on Tuesday and took stock of the arrangements. Accompanied by Additional District Collector Pratima Singh, the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Hari Singh interacted with the officials deployed at the storeroom and inquired about the electronic voting machines available at the facility and the measures being taken to ensure the safety of the ballot machines. The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer advised the officials at the helm of affairs to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of the EVMs stored at the facility. Following inspection, the election official sealed the storeroom in the presence of the representatives from different political parties. RDO Rajendranagar Venkatreddy, storeroom in-charge B Ramulu and other officials were present at the occasion. The visit of Deputy Chief Electoral Officer comes a day after the State Chief Electoral Officer C Sudarshan Reddy held a review meeting with the collectors through video conference. During the meeting, Sudarshan Reddy suggested the officials to issue identification cards to Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and complete the process before June 25. The CEO also instructed the officials to establish new polling stations where the number of voters has crossed the mark of 1,200 in the constituencies. 'Earlier, the number of 1,500 voters was taken into account for the setting up of a new polling station. Now, steps are being taken to establish new polling stations even for below 1,200 voters. For this, a list of newly identified polling stations should be sent to the Collectors by June 25,' said the CEO. Besides, he said, new booth level officers should be appointed wherever it is found necessary. They should be locals and if nobody is found, the Anganwadi workers should be roped-in, he added.

Jaunpur: Cow smuggler killed, 2 injured in encounter after cop's death
A cow smuggler was shot dead and two others were injured in an encounter with police on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, after their pickup vehicle fatally ran over a head constable during a checking drive near Khujji turn under Chandavak police station area in Jaunpur, officials said. The incident began around 11.50 pm on Saturday when a police team intercepted a speeding pickup suspected of smuggling cattle. Instead of stopping, the vehicle accelerated and ran over head constable Durgesh Kumar Singh, 35. Police said he was taken to Trauma Centre, Varanasi, where he was declared brought dead by doctors at 12:46 am on Sunday. Superintendent of police, Jaunpur, Dr Kaustubh said police teams had been on alert following a previous attempt by cattle smugglers to attack police. On the intervening night of May 14 and 15, the same gang had allegedly tried to mow down the Jalalpur outpost in-charge sub-inspector Pratima Singh and three other police personnel. Pratima Singh remains in serious condition at the trauma centre. After Saturday night's fatal incident, police launched a coordinated chase involving teams from nearby police stations and the special operations group (SOG). The smugglers, after abandoning their pickup (registration number UP 65 PT 9227) at Tala Bela village under Cholapur police station limits in Varanasi, fled on two motorcycles. As police closed in near Chandwak, the smugglers reportedly opened fire. In the retaliatory exchange, three accused, Salman (Jaunpur), Narendra Yadav (Varanasi), and Golu (Chandauli), sustained gunshot injuries. Salman, who was shot in the chest, died while being taken to the community health centre in Dobhi. The two others are undergoing treatment at a district hospital, the SP informed. Police said three members of the gang, identified as Rahul Yadav, Raju Yadav, and Azad Yadav, managed to escape during the encounter. Police have formed teams to trace and arrest them. The pickup vehicle used during the incident was recovered from Tala Bela village. SP Kaustubh confirmed that head constable Durgesh Kumar Singh's post-mortem was underway and his last rites would be conducted with full state honours. On May 15, a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (murder) was registered against the unidentified pickup driver and others involved at Jalalpur police station.

Indiramma Housing Scheme: Officials embark on door-to-door beneficiary verification drive
Rangareddy: To ensure transparency in identifying the deserving candidates to help them get benefited with government schemes, teams of officials from various wings have been formed in Ranga Reddy district. They visited villages for field verifications. The teams are extensively examining the eligible applicants with the help of evidence-based data available with the government. A team led by Special Secretary (Housing) V P Goutham, and additional district collector Pratima Singh, conducted house-to-house verification on Tuesday in wards of the Thukkuguda municipality under Maheshwaram constituency. The team is said to have covered Mankhal, Tukkuguda and Sirigiripur villages during their visit and interacted with people who applied for double bedroom houses under the Indiramma Housing Scheme. The team went into details provided by the applicants and is said to have compared it with the data available with officials. The special secretary interacted with several applicants during the door-to-door inspection and inquired about their present status of the applicant's family, their financial condition. Goutham said that the teams will visit houses of applicants and collect details before approving their candidature. The officials were instructed to identify the eligible homeless poor to help them get the benefit of the housing scheme. Pratima Singh instructed officials to visit houses of applicants and cross check the details thoroughly, leaving no scope of errors and discrepancies. This will help get a good name for the government and the district as well. The team comprised district housing project director Dharavat C Nayak, Thukkuguda Municipal commissioner A Vani, Maheshwaram tahsildar T Saidulu, MPDO K Sailaja Reddy and verification officer Ram Prasad, besides municipal staff.
